Based on the book "Ich bin dann mal weg" by Hape Kerkeling where the author describes his journey on the Way of St. James, a pilgrimage route, and the people he encounters there.
In the flashbacks, young Achim on the keyboards is a nod to Achim Hagemann, Kerkelings schoolmate and long-time stage companion.
The pilgrims office in Santiago as displayed in the movie was not in operation in 2001. Back then, when Kerkeling walked the Camino, the office would have looked differently.
The closing credits are written on a diary accompanied with walking equipment, different photos from the Camino de Santiago and other things, including the cover of the original book the movie is based on.
