As mentioned last year, it seems that anime are experiencing another golden era, which started in 2021 and continued in full bloom in 2022. And all this, while the new Miyazaki movie is going to come out this summer, probably becoming the new biggest box office hit in the history of Japanese cinema.

In the third edition of our tribute to anime, we focused more on retro titles, in an effort to fill the catalogue of our reviews with titles from the 80s also. This does not mean, however, that we did not include newer series, with the relaunching of Legend of the Galactic Heroes being presented in all its 3-seasons glory. Here is a list with all the titles we wrote about this August.
1. 86 (2021) by Toshimasa Ishii
The series is split in two parts, with the aforementioned mission being the dichotomy. The first part features much action, but the focus is actually on context, with Toshimasa Ishii presenting a number of sociopolitical comments through a dialogue-heavy approach. Lena’s gradual disillusionment about what is happening with the 86 is quite shattering in that regard, with the exploitation of kids that are sent in the front lines being a direct accusation on fundamentalists, to say the least.

The third season of the series aired from October 10, 2021 to January 23, 2022, and continues to focus on the B-Rank wars as the Tamakoma-2 are trying to secure one of the two top places that will allow them to follow the Border Defence Agency Away Mission. With the help of newcomer Hyuse, who proves a tremendous fighter, Osamu, Kuga and Chika have won their battles so far, earning many points, but their next challenges are even bigger, as they have to score heavily against the top B-teams.
Allow me to start with the two major negatives of the third season. The first one is that the sociopolitical comments and overall intrigue of the first season is nowhere to be found, maybe with the exception of how rumors work and how an organization can silence them, which is presented revolving around Hyuse’s presence. The second is that, although everyone is rooting for Tamakoma to win,...

In the vast plethora of shonen anime in the style of “Naruto” that dominate the industry, it is always good to find titles that manage to stand out, even if the differences are not extremely significant. “World Trigger” is one of those titles, which, although it follows many of the “rules” of the category, manages to stand out, particularly because it functions as the anime version of an intricate J-rpg.
The setting of the story is Mikado City, where a gate to a different world has opened, “inviting” monsters called Neighbors in the area. Humans are overwhelmed in the beginning and the disasters are humongous, as regular weapons seem to be useless against the monsters. Eventually, a mysterious organization called “Border” appears, including a humongous structure in the middle of the area the first attack occurred, whose members seem to have appropriated Neighbor technology that can use against the monsters.
