  • If it's a project featuring one of the biggest superstars of Indian film industry eagerly awaited by his huge fan following in the south (coming after a long gap of three years ignoring the animated KOCHADAIYAAN), then its nothing less than a big cinematic festival in that specific region celebrating the event in an unbelievable style, not seen even in the case of biggest Hindi film stars to be honest.

However if the same film releases in its dub format in Hindi then it struggles to find viewers even in its very first show despite all the hype and publicity received. And I was really surprised to have this contradictory experience this Friday, when the theater owners told me that you will have to wait for a while as we need more tickets to be sold in order to run its first show as scheduled. Fortunately about 12- 15 people did come asking for LINGAA and I thankfully got to see it as desired in its dubbed version.

Moving on to the film, it has everything required for a Rajinikanth project supporting his larger than life image of both a superstar as well as a socially active person. But sadly the content has nothing fresh to say and gives you the same old feeling of watching a complete masala flick of the 80s with ample dosage of heroism, patriotism and emotional drama written around the superstar. In other words, LINGAA once again offers that standard mix of many typical sub-plots put together including a petty group of thieves, a casual heist, a romantic news reporter, the village link, an emotional flashback with the period theme, references of British rule and their brutality, a rich maharaja turning into a savior, an important dam built by him alone, misunderstandings being created, love affairs thrown in to fill the space and then a poor climax with some mediocre action heading towards a happy ending.

The dialogues are specifically written asking for claps and whistles in the theater, whereas few early songs are just added into the script like a five minutes relief item or a musical advertisement as usual. Beginning with all below average sequences, the narration goes into a long (nearly 100 minutes) flashback hindering the pace severely. And returning to the present you just have the routine end-fight to see, shot hurriedly with some mediocre special effects, strangely in a Rajinikanth film. Probably the length has something to do with the viewers phenomenal love for their icon, forcing the makers to give them more. But having nothing fresh to say in its nearly three hours, LINGAA struggles hard to make an impression and remains just an average film with the only saving grace being the Superstar.

Mentioning its plus points, the film largely works in its emotional or confrontation scenes alone and fails to deliver anything great when it comes to the basic storyline, songs, background score and performances. Where the action impresses in its early train sequence, it does exactly the opposite in the climax fight. Cinematography and Sabu Cyril's art direction visibly gives the film its much required support but A. R. Rahman's musical score remains the biggest disappointment undeniably. The master composes a very ordinary soundtrack for such a big venture and it was even more surprising to see the name of Gulzar behind some of its weird lyrics like "Mona Gasolina" and more.

Performance wise, Rajinikanth does manage to deliver a towering act as the generous Maharaja, but doesn't have anything novel to offer as the young thief (he has a double role in the film). Sonakshi Sinha does it well and is more appealing in her controlled act in the later reels. Anushka is charming as far as looks are concerned but gets to play a completely artificial character in the film. Plus the enormous supporting cast mostly comes up with all average acts as required in its flashback sequences.

In short, it's a project featuring one of India's biggest superstar, but again has the same predictable story to tell where the lead character first gets maligned and thrown out of the village only to regain his lost respect and image as the truth gets revealed with a hugely disappointing climax. Honestly we have seen this many times before since the last century and now actually wish to see something more innovative, path breaking and unexpectedly impressive when it comes to names such as Rajinikanth. Hope our Thalaivaa will deliver the same in his next venture rising above the routine soon.
  • Lingaa…My Review

What do we expect from a Rajnikanth film, which is already labeled as a mass entertainer? Only Pure Mass and, Lingaa offers it to a good level, except for the hilariously horrible climax.

Directed by KS Ravikumar, the movie is about Raja Lingeshwara, his efforts and sacrifice to build a dam, which will be beneficial for 10 generations.

The movie started in a good manner showing the present situation of dam and gave intro to few villains. The dam-checker dies requesting to open the closed temple. And, the village head urges that, only the heir to Raja Lingeshwara should open the temple, as it was built by him. And, there comes Linga(Rajnikanth), understands the greatness of his Grandpa, Raja Lingeshwara(Again Rajnikanth) and protects the dam from villains.

The story line has nothing great in it, but presentation in an engaging manner makes Lingaa watchable. The comedy track by Rajni nd Santhanam with Anushka kept the first half engaging. Those heist scenes were also funny. But the movie entered kick-ass mode after the intro of Vintage Rajnikanth as Raja Lingeshwara. Those flash back scenes, in the pre-independence period, were near class with a good amount of mass content in it. Once those flash back scenes end, the movie enters into crap-mode eventually leading to a horrible climax. Those actions sequences seemed so funny that, I was unable to stop ma laugh.

Coming to performances, Rajnikanth is the life of the film….A to Z, it is Rajni show. The movie required a superstar for the role and Rajnikanth was perfect. He kept the screen on fire as Raja Lingeshwara. He looked young at 64 with unmatchable screen-presence, mass dialogues, action sequences and dance moves, everything in Rajni style. Santhanam took charge over the comedy track with a few genuine wits. Coming to the heroines, Sonakshi Sinha had a rather important role than Anushka and she did justice to her role. Anushka had nothing to do except to reveal more skin, especially in Gasolina song. The one who acted as British Collector was also good. Dev Gill's good man role seemed novel. Jagapathy Babu was an unwanted antagonist, still did his part very well. Rest of the supporting cast did their usual jobs. Brief appearance of Brahmanandam was too crappy to be enjoyed.

Coming to the making side… KS Ravikumar didn't do justice to his job completely. I felt that, his concentration was fully on the flash- back part and left the other parts loose. A better script in those ending parts would have made Lingaa memorable. His direction seemed just okayish.Technically the movie didn't seem that rich. Songs were misplaced and certain scenes lacked basic logic. Pon Kumaran's story was good enough to build a decent script, but KSR screwed it with his crappy scripting in the end portions. How can one jump from bike to a parachute, then roll over it with a rope, fight with the villain, kill him, rescue the heroine from falling and kick-away the bomb into the dam that too all these in a span of less than 3minutes….!!! May be Rajnikanth can do it….but it felt too funny to enjoy.

Coming to the technical side, Music by AR Rahman was good. BGM was of top class but seemed normal at certain scenes. Songs could have been better, only a couple of them were good. Choreography of 'En Mannava' song was awesome. Editing wasn't crisp, certain portions could've been trimmed off. Action sequences in that Train Fight was of top class. Visual effects didn't seem that realistic except for a few shots in the train fight and dam building scenes. VFX in Gasolina song wasn't that fine. Camera work was of good quality. Kudos to Ratnavelu.

Overall, Lingaa adjusts itself to an average fare without offering anything new. Watch the film for impeccable screen presence of Superstar and those energetic flash back scenes.

    Strictly Average

Thank You for reading ma views about Lingaa… Yours Truly…Sooraj
  • I booked tickets and went to ''LUXE CINEMAS'' Phoenix mall Chennai the theater was house full(30 shows run per day in the multiplex all houseful),enjoyed the film cause it was funny and then gets real serious ,and it is totally worth your money.watch this film if you speak Tamil, and if your from India!you'd love it.it has everything every kinda person expects small to old.never mind the negative stuff people tell u about the climax just enjoy the film.:)however DO NOT go to this film during the end days(empty cinemas)you'd get real bored ,this film requires a audience like applaud viewing to enjoy it to the max.i know i sound silly but hell yea this is ''rajini's'' film and being his fan since i was 2 years old (yea 24 months exact)i can tell u just one thing.simply watching him act will suffice your money spent

I am die hard fan of Rajini sir, If its Rajini movie no one will be looking for story, logic in the movie we will be just awed by Rajini presence in the screen.

This movie does not utilize Rajini Charisma and potential to the fullest this is the major down for this movie. another letdown is the movie length, during the second half it got so dragged we forgot what happened in the first half. Even though the songs are good the placement make the movie lengthy and boring.

Director could have concentrated on the story screenplay and on using Rajini potential to fullest like Rajini in SIVAJi.

Below average story, screenplay for STYLE SAMRAT SUPERSTAR

Just rating 6 purely because of Rajini.

This is probably worst tamil movie in Rajini's entire career. No wonder why it was flop. Rajini's movies are big budget movies. This movie was one of the biggest mistake Rajini ever did in his life.

    Warning: Spoilers
I went to see this movie with my family, I didn't have I expectations but I was totally unprepared for the horror that awaited. The movie, in my opinion, was the worst movie this year. The beginning was a bit funny, thanks to Santhanam's comedy, but the flashback was a disaster. I know there are many kind people in the world, but come on, who in their right minds would be kind enough to lose their post, all their wealth and their status all for some people whom they've never met before? Actually, I was sort of rooting for the evil British guy, because he was WAY MORE likable. Sonakshi Sinha was very irritating and the whole plot was sort of unbelievable, and not in a good way. The ending was even worse! The filmmakers rushed the end way too quickly, with not enough time to get to know the main villain all that well. I know Superstar is old, but was it necessary to put in all that jumping and prancing around. And there were loads of goofs too, such as:

    1. When Lingaa is hiding with Anushka in the cupboard, Anushka accidentally steps out. The CCTV camera would have picked this up and when the police review the CCTV footage, they would have seen her. Yet, the police do not call her for an inquiry.

    2. After he stole the necklace, he put it on Anushka and walked out in a crowd. There had to be some guards nearby and even if there weren't, it's very unlikely that nobody saw the huge necklace and wondered why someone would be wearing a priceless necklace in the middle of the night for no apparent reason.

    3. When he was trapped in the temple, he was wearing his normal clothes, the temple is dusty and full of cobwebs and there is no source of fire. But, when the temple opened, he was wearing a dhoti, the temple looks good as new and they had fire (even if there was a fire source, it is highly unlikely that it would still function after 70 years).

    4. Why did the villain bring Anushka on the hot air plane? I know he loved her and all, but by then, he had known she was on Lingaa's side, so he must have guessed she would try to stop him.

    5. At the end the police forgive Lingaa for theft and just ask him to come for an inquiry because he was "royalty". He was a thief who stole a priceless jewel and eluded police capture, yet the police are very kind to him.

These are only some of the faults in this movie, so do yourselves a favor and DON'T WATCH this movie.
  • Warning: Spoilers
After Kochadaiyaan flopped Rajinikanth was under heavy pressure to deliver a hit. Hence for the first time in almost a decade he decided to do 2 films in a single year. The songs are a complete disaster and I personally did not like a single song. To pick the best among the worst, one had to pick Gasolina. When I watched the trailer I had a lot of expectations, and it created an impression that a lot of hard work has gone in, however on watching the movie one realizes that many shots shown in the trailer was from songs, especially Rajinikanth coming down from the roof, one expected it to be an action scene but the movies shows otherwise.

Story: Typical Rajinikanth story where he is the only noble soul in the planet who becomes a pauper by doing good. Grandfather sells his property to build a dam only to lose money. If you expect Grandson will earn back the lost money then its a big No. Grandson merely opens a temple which was locked when his grandfather was thrown out of the village and saves the dam (and also the village) from a bomb which the villain wants to plant.

The Good: Rajinikanth- He looks extremely young (25-30 years) and he is the only reason people will watch the movie. Rest everything is bad.

The Bad: Story: Its a disaster. Consider the story like a mix Muthu flashback + many other Rajini Movie. Direction: Extremely bad - The director has simply banked on Rajinikanths star power. The way Jaggubai was directed clearly indicated that KS Ravikumar is way past his prime. Wondering why Rajini chose him.Maybe friendship was the reason. Costumes: Were good at many places however found it weird that in 1936 (flashback) the suits worn by the Englishmen looked like contemporary design. Overly dramatic: The scene where a few villages come to the city in search of the king and when they are hungry and Mr poor and noble Rajinikanth feeds them has been seen 1000 times in movies (Kandukondein Kandukondein is what I can recall instantly) Also the scene where the older Rajinikanth is asked to leave the village and it Rains has also been seen 1000 times (Baasha) makes one feel that the film industry has not grown since 20 years. Music & BGM: Seems like Rahman outsourced his work to some Z grade person due to time pressure. Easily his worst work in recent times.

Verdict: Like Kochadaiyaan, this movie has flop written all over it. Die hard Rajini fans will try to watch it numerous times and praise the movie to make it seem like a hit but one has to face reality.

Releasing the movie in Hindi will cause further embarrassment since I am sure Tamil speaking audience will themselves dislike the movie/

    Rating: 2/10 only for Rajinikanth.
  • A real entertainer. I really felt that this movie did justice to Rajnikanth as an actor. To be honest I liked this movie more than Shivaji and Enthiran. The story was really good. The last 10-15 mins were a little cheesy and dragging, but I was thoroughly entertained right from the beginning. Anushka and Sonakshi acted really well. Santanam is an amazing comedian throughout the movie. Some of the jokes were hilarious and outstanding. One joke I really enjoyed was when Santanam talks to Anushka about Rajnikanth and says "Avar sollardhu konjam purinjiko! Avar oru dhadava dhan solluvaru!" (reminding you of the famous dialogue from the movie Baasha).

A really fun and must watch film for all. I expect Rajni fans to really enjoy this one!
  • Its been 4 years since people saw a live action movie from Thalaivar and of course the expectations will be high when he joined hands with K.S.Ravikumar. The duo has almost given a pukka movie this time. Thalaivar fans will almost love the movie in which Thalaivar's charisma and style carries the movie on its shoulder.

Positives: Thalaivar! He is a big plus in this movie. No one could have done this role. People wont accept any other person in this role. As Lingaa, he brings in never seen charisma and his usual style at ease. As Raja Lingeaswaran, he brings in the ambitious thoughts of an anger Indian who wants to do something for his country.

Sonakshi Sinha - She proved language is no bar. Very wonderful depiction of a young naughty local village girl. She is a very big plus indeed.

Indianea vaa song will be loved by everyone for its picturization, the story it tries to tell and of course ARR's voice.

Dialogues are very crisp and sharp. Makes the movie watchable till the end.

Costumes are very good as its important to show Thalaivar in some never seen before costumes which suits his style.

Things which could have been better:

The climax clearly shows the hurry in which the team worked in order to release it on Thalaivar's Birthday. It is good but the scene has some poor MGR period's graphics and stunts which almost takes us to tollywood.

BGM - Though it is good at some points, it clearly shows the BGM to has been done in a hurry. ARR could have concentrated more on BGM. It let down some scenes.

Anushka has scope for acting but she was used merely for glamor and nothing else.

Many characters have no base stories to come up so that we can believe them and some are over-reacting. They change sides quickly without deciding.

Placing of En Mannavaa song is almost like a normal typical commercial movie where you pack 1-2 songs unnecessarily.

If not for the climax, My Rating will be 7/10.

    Watch it for our Thalaivar!
  • Watched Lingaa Here is my take.In short the movie showed up lots of flaws as a crash project mega budget movie. Direction I would say 3/10 didn't expect this from Ravi Kumar. Superstar in the flash back portions rocked with his calm and polite acting. The starting 30 mins of the movie I felt really boring and dragging. Introduction song of super star showed too much efforts by Rajini to dance along with the foreigners. But watching the song I felt that he can stop acting as hero and move on doing roles like Big B. VFX was so poor in the movie. Our heroines looked almost alike in their built were just used as dolls nothing much to do. Songs of ARR was disappointing. Except 2 OK kind of duets. Not his best. Overall treat for those who waited long for seeing his presence on screen. But I wouldn't buy superstar's magic in this movie this time -Reviewed by Balachandran Sivakumar
  • The wait is finally over as superstar Rajinikanth is back with Lingaa, after a long gap of four years.

Like always, Lingaa is once again a complete Rajini show all the way. Right from the word go, it is Rajni and his sheer screen presence which holds you throughout the film. Rajini excels in every department, and carries the entire film on his shoulders.

He is superb as the royal heir in the second half, and is okay in the emotional scenes. First half of the film is entertaining, and has all the necessary commercial elements.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is the excessive length. The flashback episode in the second half takes for ever to finish making it quite tedious.Second half is quite predictable, and has not many twists and turns.

As per many people, The climax is not good.

But that is the way the fans expect to end a SUPERSTAR movie...............
  • First of all the movie has a brilliant plot, when it enters into Raja Lingeswaran's flashback. But why the movie has such a low rating and box office reception you ask, i'll tell you.

The movie is well cast. Especially Vijayakumar, who does a great job.

The movie falls mainly due to poor direction, cinematography, music and pretty much every technical department fails in this one.

K.S. Ravikumar had a great story but overloads it with a lot usual masala stuff, making it a tough watch.

The stunts reminded me of "Man of steel", with a lot of flying and destruction. Totally cringe worthy.

The director tries hard to bring the style element in, but fails. Because first the movies like Baasha, Padayappa, Arunachalam etc.. set a baseline standard for Thalaivar. Then the bar was set even higher by Shankar's Sivaji with an even more stylish Superstar. KSR tries to bring all these style elements together, failing big time.

Another extremely irritating part of the movie being the portrayal of the heroines. A total Arunachalam-Padayappa rip off. Those kind of heroines were popular then. Times have changed, it's 2015 now and social situations have changed a lot. But the director sadly, is still stuck in the 19th century.

IN A NUTSHELL, I WOULD SAY: The movie would have been better with only the RAJA's sequence, where SUPERSTAR would shine as an ACTOR rather than just a style icon.

Rajini did so well in the RAJA half, it was brilliant by the actor.

And one thing i would criticize on the RAJA's sequence would be that they fail to show the Architectural difficulties of building such a dam.

Other than that the RAJA's plot was just sheer brilliance. Certainly a watchable movie which could have been better.

The only 3 stars is for Rajni.

I see they have given 9.3 starts out of 10. That is not true. I LOVE RAJNI but if this was not a RAJNI movie, then this movie would have got 1 STAR.

Story line 3/10 - The story takes you back to British ruling period and its not that great. It doesn't look like this took place in 1939.

Music 3/10 - nothing great, not even okay. AR Rehman could have done better. The song Mona Mona Gasolina is not catchy. The introduction song is also not great. For Rajni, this should have been THE SONG. Disappoints.

Comedy 3/10 - expected more comedy but except for once in blue moon, no much comedy.

Action 3/10 - not typical Rajni actions Punch Dialog - not one Dialogs - one or two

I would watch Sivaji or Padayappa once again in Movie Theater and would gladly pay $25 (ticket was $25) but not for this movie, I would wait for the DVD.

Not worth First Day First Show. or Last Day Last Show.

    Sorry guys
  • Watched Lingaa!! Well, the first 20 minutes was really unbearable, after which some respite, came with the nicely done slow motion fight scene on top of moving train. Though the movie is watchable once...it doesn't have the energy of a Padaiyappa, nor it induce pathos like Muthu, and definitely not the style and masala like Shivaji or Robo if one wants to draw a comparison. Can call it an average Rajni movie. One thing very evident through out the movie was clearly the star has aged. I think after this he should accept roles which matches his age like Amithabh does, take for example Sarkar, Baghban or even some thing like Drishyam etc, where the roles demand a more dignified star power.

ARR's music is also nothing to write about. Nor the production quality. In fact I can say the production quality is below average, no single scene looks like it was set in pre-independence era. The Slow motion fight scene is brilliant, looks like cut and pasted from some other movie. May be they outsourced that bit..who knows.
  • I was very eagerly looking forward to watching Lingaa on the very first day because of all the good hype and the fact that we would be get to see Thalaivar back in action after a very long time. However, after watching the movie I was quite disappointed. Very disappointed, indeed.

POSITIVES: -Rajnikanth - His charisma, style and way of delivering dialogues is amazing. You can easily see vintage Rajni in this movie. He is the only reason to watch this movie. There is nothing else in Lingaa. -Cinematography - One important technician who made everything look grand with his camera angles

NEGATIVES: -Direction - KS Ravikumar's worst till date. Same old techniques. Everything seemed very shallow and lacked detail. The screenplay was not bearable at all.Pretty slow at times.

-Story - Are we Tamilians planning to watch the same old clichéd stories for a 1000 more years? Dad, son, revenge, bad guy etc. Oh! Please. A less than ordinary story. -Bad characters - Villains? I thought they were jokers! Very shallow characterization. -Music - Without any second thought, this is one of ARR's worst in recent years. -CLIMAX - Needless to say, I would be surprised if viral memes aren't created to mock Lingaa's climax

At the end of the day, I feel bad for Rajni sir. I feel that he should have chosen a stronger script for his comeback. And KSR must take note that the tastes of movie watchers has changed tremendously, thanks to new age story tellers and directors of Tamil cinema. He needs to reinvent himself and his direction skills.

Watch it for Rajni sir.Only for thalaivar. There is nothing else in the movie.

The producers have already got back their money by selling distribution rights to Eros.I pity the distributors and theater owners.

I know that many people might down-vote this review and post a 10/10 for the movie. But dear fan-boys, I know that you too are aware of the fact deep down in your heart that this movie sucked big time and Thalaivar deserved something way better.
  • Warning: Spoilers
A must watch different than usual masala film. So watch it you would fall in love of Rajnikant with pure intention of a good movie Perfectly made adaption of a true story of the mullaperiyar dam and the travancore family...

Don't know why the hell the movie recieved negative reviews and criticism and why Rajnikant had to compensate personally for such a path breaking classic movie...

Yeah it's true that his make up was ain't upto the mark also majority of people trolled for the climax stunts sequence as a failure for the movie but our people generosity is to accept only Tom cruise or other Hollywood heroes for these kind of stunts & hail them...

    K. S Ravikumar's writing was better than the direction and there was few lagging in the first half that fails to connect with the audience moreover VFX & Art department too fails too meet the expectations...

Overall a must see movie for not only the ardent fans of his but do watch it for a kind and good intentional natured human called Rajnikanth who kept us entertained for over four decades...
  • Warning: Spoilers
this movie is too painful to describe, this is one of the worst projects done by rajini. well only the craaazzzyyyy fans of rajinikath with get a kick out of the movie, otherwise the movie is too generic, too predictable and flat out dry. given that its a movie of a very respected director, he just hasn't done his best in this movie.

lets list this movie by its pros and cons.

pros: unquestionably the acting is great across the board, rajini puts his best into the movie. hes just as bad-ass as he is in all his other movies. Anuska does a fine job as a heroine but shes not given as much to do as one would expect. sonaksi is a real stand out. as its her debut film shes really pulls of her character and she is one of the best things in the movie. the supporting cast is strong and the witty comedy is heart warming. the action is just what you'll expect in a rajini movie but thats about.thats all thats good abt the movie

cons: as u can expect the bad things is just gonna pile up here. the script is paper thin and the length of the movie is its biggest flaw. the movie is too draggy and the screenplay is too boring to watch. the flashback sequence of the movie is way to long. the editing is mediocre and the song placement just doesn't make sense. the biggest letdown in the movie is the final 15min. it just destroys logic in every way possible. the movie tried hard to make us "wow" but it just ended up making us place our hands on our heads in grief.

its best to be left unwatched. it just doesn't pack a punch and its a total waste of movie, watch it when it comes on TV someday. this is not the one you want to spend on.
  • This movie is a treat for ardent Rajini fans. The first half is lot funnier than second half. 3 hours of watching Rajini, What more you can ask for. Santhanam is very funny. The cinematography looked fresh, opulent and grandeur. The fight scene on the moving train is nicely choreographed. Indianay Vaa and Mona Gasolinaa are very good to listen too. The only complaint I have is the length of the movie. They could have trimmed the sentimental stuff by half an hour. I was told that the movie was completed in a record time which could be the reason why it was not edited well. If you are an analyst type who needs explanation for every move, you are better off watching some other movie. If you are a fan of Rajini, go ahead. You will have fun.
  • KiranKumar198528 September 2016
Good movie acted by Rajini sir and the movie flashback is super and the jewelry show seen are good.

Lingaa is a 2014 Indian Tamil action film written and directed by K.S. Ravikumar. The film was produced by Rockline Venkatesh under Rocklines Entertainment. The film's script was written by Pon Kumaran. The film stars Rajinikanth, Anushka Shetty and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles while Santhanam, Jagapati Babu and Karunakaran essay supporting roles. The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman. The cinematography and editing was handled by R. Rathnavelu and Samjith Mhd respectively. The film revolves around Lingaa, a thief who enters a village called Solaiyur to save the dam and temple built by his grandfather.

Principal photography commenced during the last week of May 2014 in Mysore. The majority of the filming took place in Ramoji Film City. The climax portions were filmed in Shimoga. The film was released on 12 December 2014, coinciding with Rajinikanth's birthday. The film was dubbed and released in Telugu and Hindi with same name.Though an above average grosser at the box office, the film failed to recover its high distribution cost.
  • TheOneWhoAbides13 December 2014
    Warning: Spoilers
A thief whose grandfather was a Maharaja lives away from his home place because he despises his grandfather for ignoring his father and his family or at least he thinks his grandfather ignored his family. But in a dramatic turn of events he ends up coming to his home place and eventually learns how much of a great man his grandfather really was. The film starts on a passable note and runs creating an impression on the audiences that it's a masala film. Some okay comedy and a couple of songs and passable scenes creates such an impression. But once the flashback starts unfolding, somehow we begin to feel that it's not just a cheap routine masala movie. And as the film progresses it looks more decent. The flashback is an asset to this film which is actually a major portion of it's running length. And another important asset is it's cinematography. The humongous visuals of the dam and the area surrounding it look stunning along with a lot more other visuals! The story is not really new but the way it was told was good. The film takes enough time to narrate the story and scenes without wrapping things up hurriedly. This is the reason why the almost three hour running length of the film doesn't really bother. One scene in particular where a few people discover their Maharaja living an austere life is so natural and is the best scene in the entire movie. After the flashback one would be left with an impression that it's not really a masala film and is something sensible. But just then we get to the climax which features some insane stunts and disturbs the feel. Except for fight sequences and not so great songs it's a fine film. It ends on a satisfying note making it a good watch.
  • It is one of the best movie with Rajini super star.

I can say it is a really family picture and you can watch with your kid.

There 2 Rajini story and both are directed very well and very amazing to showing Rajini with Young.

Big plus for Rajini fans. Mostly positive on this movie.

Only I felt in the movie was sudden slow or moving film slow at old Rajini. May if this showed fast then it is very excellent.

Definitely you can watch this movie and enjoy it.

    Cheers, Lenin
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the better Rajinikanth films made. One that celebrates his stardom and also tells a good story. The 64 year old Superstar is highly energetic, fun and nails his comic timing as the jewel thief which is surprising considering the actors half his age struggle to do the same with better plots. Santhanam is a wonderful side kick, as usual, quick with his one line jokes that never cease to bore nor stop. Rajni's second role as the Solayur Maharaja was better. The story was well told, heart touching and in style. What ruined the entire film experience are 1)the first song, which is just Rajni and hot ladies singing same phrase that has no meaning, for 5mins. 2) the Maharaja intro fight scene which clearly had one of the worst CGIs. Stunt double scenes even though obvious was better. 3) the action scene in the end with Rajni trying to stop bombing of the dam. The antagonist who planned well suddenly went crazy with hot air balloon and bombs? Rajni jumping over the balloon over green screen? Ridiculous..!!

All the sins aside, the film was a pleasant watch. If not for these forced scenes this would've been among the top Rajni films among Padayappa Sivaji and Petta.
  • Lingaa (Rajini), a happy go-getter lives out of petty thefts. He is in fact the grandson of Raja Lingeswara, the King of Gadwal Sansthan. Lingaa is traced by Journalist Lakshmi (Anushka) who wants him to open the old Shiva temple in her drought stricken Singanoor village. But MLA Naga Bhushanam (Jagapathi Babu) has vested interests in the dam to be constructed in Singanoor. So, why did Lingaa come to the village and how is he connected to the prestigious Singanoor dam initiated by his grandfather Raja Lingeswara forms the plot of the story. Rajinikanth: The Superstar is always a charmer and so is he in this film as well. He was an absolute entertainer in the first half. He was as usually elegant and majestic in the Raja Lingeswara role and indeed lived in the character. His one-liners and animated fights, especially the train fight in the second half was the real stunner. But the fans always expect more from the Superstar and that unique Rajini magic is missing in this film.

Anushka: One should wonder how she can be so pretty with each growing year. But somehow, she did not suit Rajini in the film.

Sonakshi Sinha: We know she is a lucky charm in the North but now she earned respect down South as well with Lingaa. She was very impressive as the village belle 'Bharati' and struck a decent chemistry with the Superstar in the song as well.

Jagapathi Babu: This manly star was the name sake villain in the film. If you are expecting a 'Legend or PNLJ' JB then we are sorry you might end up disappointed.

Santhanam & his associate comedy gang: They were indeed successful in entertaining, especially in the first half.

Brahmanandam: The special cameo by Brahmi was in fact the biggest disappointment. The rest of the cast especially the British actors did an impressive job. Lingaa is a one-time watch and that too for Rajinikanth. All the hard core Thalaiva fans, hold your excitement for his next film.
