Just over a year ago, the Peacock streaming service announced they were teaming up with genre filmmaker James Wan for a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here) – and even at the time, it was clear that they wouldn’t be keeping the Stinger title, because the show was being referred to as the Untitled Ian McCulloch Project, since Yellowstone consulting producer Ian McCulloch was on board to write and executive produce the show. The project is now going by the title Teacup, and not only has Peacock given it a straight-to-series order (allowing it to bypass the usual pilot process), but Deadline reports that Yvonne Strahovski, whose credits include Chuck, The Predator, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stateless, Dexter, The Tomorrow War, and He’s Out There, has signed on to play the series regular role of Maggie Chenoweth. Strahovski will also be a producer on the show.

Today at the Cannes Film Festival, Israeli cineaste Nadav Lapid and French provocateur François Ozon premiered two more films in competition. Both flicks, Ahed's Knee and Everything Went Fine, have received good notices, intensifying international anticipation. Since most of us can't be at Cannes, we shall distract ourselves with past works from these auteurs. Another notable first screening was Todd Haynes' documentary about The Velvet Underground, featured out of competition. In the Cinema à la Plage section, Jerry Schatzberg's Palme d'Or-winning Scarecrow returned to the festival, while Joanna Hogg's The Souvenir screened for the Director's Fortnight in anticipation of its sequel. There have been a number of films in recent years from the far northern Russian republic of Yakutia that blend folkloric elements with their drama, including Ága and The Lord Eagle, and now Dmitrii Davydov's Scarecrow joins the emerging trend.
Set in the depths of winter, this is a chilly character study with a strong primal atmosphere that hinges on the intense central performance from Valentina Romanova-Chyskyyray, an award-winning singer in her homeland and who, if there is any justice, should pick up more film roles on the back of this. Muffled in layer upon layer of jumpers and coat, she plays the "scarecrow" of the title.
Like many women who have been considered "healers" down the ages in cultures across the globe, she is paradoxically treated as a pariah in the small town where she lives at the same time as regularly finding people on her doorstep looking for medical help.

Dmitry Davidov’s “Scarecrow” is a microbudget supernatural drama shot in the northernmost parts of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). It is the first Yakutia film to have won an award for a best film at the Kinotaur Festival.
The Scarecrow (Valentina Romanova-Chyskyyrai) is a traditional healer from a small village somewhere in Yakutia. Though hated by all other villagers, often times they have to resort to her to her supernatural powers when there is no other way. After each and every violent encounter, she pukes the vile black sickness and washes the horror away with vodka.
Dmitry Davidov takes a horror movie premise and creates out of it an intense human drama with just a twist of supernatural. The Scarecrow is a healer that seems to cure people through what are alluded to be intensely physical and violent acts, even possibly sexual ones (this is never...

“Will you just look at this room?” Long before IndieWire Editor-in-Chief Dana Harris-Bridson managed to wrangle a packed assortment of some of Sundance’s many female filmmakers from a bustling cocktail hour to a three-course meal one floor above, the guests were something to behold. “Miss Americana” filmmaker Lana Wilson easily chatted with “Shirley” director Josephine Decker, who soon sought out “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker Emerald Fennell to congratulate her on her Saturday night premiere. Across the room, Zeina Durra (“Luxor”) and Kitty Green (“The Assistant”) formed a talkative circle with Garrett Bradley (“Time”) and Eliza Hittman (“Never Rarely Sometimes Always”).

Universal set Heisserer to adapt the manuscript from Josh Malerman in 2013 for Mama helmer Andy Muschietti. Previous Blood List alumni include Black Swan, Stoker, Warm Bodies, and the upcoming Blumhouse thriller The Boy Next Door.
