In the Avengers (2012), Nick Fury mentions that Howard Stark found the Tesseract while looking for Captain America in the ice. It was also shown in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). In a flashback scene to 1970 in Avengers: Endgame (2019), it was shown to be stored in a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility on the military base where Captain America was created. In Avengers, the Tesseract is shown to be in possession of Project Pegasus, the same organization that Dr. Wendy Lawson (Mar-Vell) worked for. At some point in the 1970s or early 1980s, S.H.I.E.L.D. must have passed the Tessaract to Project Pegasus. Lawson would then be able to acquire it from Project Pegasus, in the 1980s, then Carol returned it in 1995.
SPOILER: There is a scene in the closing credits: Captain Marvel meets up with the Avengers, responding to the pager Nick Fury activated in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). This leads into Avengers: Endgame (2019).
