Actress Jameela Jamil, who is known for ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’, ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ and ‘How to Build a Girl’ admits her public persona used to be “negative” and “divisive” but she refused to be “cancelled”.
The 37-year-old actress became well-known for her opinionated posts on social media on a range of subjects and she didn’t shy away from conflict online – but Jameela is adamant she’s happy to apologise if she steps out of line rather than disappearing forever, reports ‘Female First UK’.
She told The Standard newspaper: “I get in trouble all the time. I think cancellation is very much your decision; whether you are so egotistical that you disappear. Or if you go, ‘sorry my bad’, and you come back.”
She further mentioned: “So I have gotten into trouble before, but I’m not going to go away because of that. Especially for women of colour,...

A24 has released a trailer for its upcoming emotional drama, “Tuesday,” which stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Lola Petticrew.
The film premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on Sept. 1 and is expected to release sometime this summer.
Louis-Dreyfus plays a loving, caring mother to a terminally ill teenage daughter (Petticrew). The two have a powerful bond, and early scenes of the “Tuesday” trailer show how they’ve embraced their circumstances with joy and humor, undaunted by the looming specter of death.
That changes when the daughter is literally confronted by death manifested in the form of a talking bird. As the story unfolds, the mother must learn to make her peace with and accept the brevity of her daughter’s time on Earth in an emotionally devastating drama about the echoes of loss and finding resilience in the unexpected.
Rounding out the cast is British actor and playwright Arinzé Kene.

Celebrities are spreading positivity for Pride Month this year with celebratory messages and urgent calls to action. In honor of the month-long celebration of love, acceptance, and identity for LGBTQ+ voices, stars are showing their support both as allies and members of the community in many ways - from participating in Pride events to proudly waving rainbow flags.
This has been a challenging year as new anti-lgbtq+ and anti-drag laws have been introduced into legislation, but celebs like Lizzo, Pedro Pascal, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gabrielle Union, and more have been vocal about their protests against them. Speaking on the pressing matter of celebrating Pride Month, this year especially, actor and activist Margaret Cho told Hollywood Life in an interview published on June 1, "Pride feels more urgent and needed. We have to stand up for our rights like never before."
Celebrities are celebrating Pride Month in other ways, too, this year.

Beanie Feldstein is married! On Thursday, Vogue confirmed the actor had tied the knot with her longtime partner, Bonnie-Chance Roberts, on May 19 at Cedar Lakes Estate in Upstate New York.
"It is our happy place together," Feldstein told the publication. "I grew up going to summer camp for ten years, and my parents and both sets of my grandparents met at summer camp, so camp is a lineage of love through the generations of my family. Even though we met in London and fell in love on a film set, to get married at a camp was a truly beautiful emotional homecoming."
Of their wedding weekend, Feldstein said, "On Friday night, we wanted to take our guests on a true camp experience with bandana tablecloths and s'mores for dessert, with pennant banners and friendship bracelets: a true 'We're at summer camp' feeling." She added: "Then, we really wanted to surprise...

He’s a bit of a legend in the UK, not as well known in the US, and now he’s starring in Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. But who is Paddy Considine? Well, he’s a British actor and director who grew up in Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire (that’s in the West Midlands for our American friends – you’re welcome!). He’s won two BAFTA awards both as director for his short film Dog Altogether and for his feature debut Tyrannosaur which starred Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan and was one of the first movies to really introduce Colman as a heavy weight actress. In House of the Dragon Considine plays Viserys I Targaryen, the well-meaning but ineffectual leader of the Targaryen dynasty, and King of the Seven Kingdoms. Loving his performance and want to see more? Here are his best roles.

Why am I crying at this movie? Like literally from the opening moments of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, I was sobbing. This is supposed to be a comedy, or a dramedy, at least: light, funny, diverting. So why was I bawling?
It’s because we don’t see “older” women — Emma Thompson is 63; is that old? — onscreen quite like this. As vulnerable. As searching. As confused. As sexual. As people. As, really, anything at all beyond a saintly devoted mother and/or wife and/or support mechanism for other people, usually a male protagonist. Existing purely in the shadow of others.
Fuuuuuuck that shit.
Be sure to toast your sex worker (and tip him well).
But here is Thompson’s Nancy, a retired schoolteacher, a widow, checking into a lux(ish) London hotel room as Leo Grande opens. Tiny details in Sophie Hyde’s (52 Tuesdays) direction and Katy Brand...

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent! Starring Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage!
I went into this movie knowing nothing more about it than that. And I was vindicated in my advance presumption that pretty much everything you need to know about it is encapsulated in that summation. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Much of your own personal assessment of that will depend, I suspect, upon what you think of Nicolas Cage as an actor and entertainer. And what you think of the current rather sorry state of American movies.
Our reactions to movies, of course, are never not about all the baggage we bring with us into the cinema (or however you watch a film), but that is amplified here. I am a big fan of Cage’s work when he is allowed to be honest and sincere; his performance in last year’s anti-revenge drama Pig may be his finest,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

The number of films available to Oscar voters in a screening room devoted to the Best Picture category hit the 200 mark on Wednesday, which means that $2.5 million has entered the Academy coffers from films paying $12,500 each to be represented in the screening room.

Black Narcissus and How to Build a Girl actress Gemma Arterton has spoken out about her time as a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace.
In a recent interview with the Sun, Arterton both defended and criticized her role as the 2008 Bond film’s Strawberry Fields. In Quantum of Solace, British Secret Service agent Strawberry Fields attempts to thwart James Bond(Daniel Craig) from accomplishing his mission, but loses guard to his suave personality and charm. Arterton’s character ultimately becomes the target of Bond’s enemies and dies smothered in crude oil.
Arterton, who has also appeared in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans, said she took the Bond role out of much needed exposure and income.

The U.K.’s insurance scheme for film and television has been extended until April.
Known as the Film and TV Production Restart Scheme, the groundbreaking £500 million ($676 million) fund assures productions that they’ll receive financial support in case of Covid-related losses. The program has so far accepted 100 qualifying productions.
The initiative was first revealed over the summer, and began accepting applications in October. While the deadline was initially set at Dec. 31, it was extended to Feb. 28 in October. A two-month extension through April is fitting given the ongoing Covid-19 crisis in the U.K., where an urgent Tier 4 level of restrictions was introduced over Christmas to combat spiking caseloads. The extra time will give producers the peace of mind to plan ahead for spring shoots.
The government has also expanded the scope of the scheme to cover cast and crew over the age of 70, who were previously excluded from coverage.

IFC Films has nabbed North American rights to South African Oliver Hermanus’ “Moffie,” a queer war film that is set against the backdrop of a South African border war. The indie studio will release the film in April 2021.
Hermanus directs the film and adapted the story from André Carl van der Merwe’s autobiographical 2006 novel with Jack Sidey. “Moffie” premiered at this year’s Venice International Film Festival. It was a homecoming of sorts for the director, whose previous feature, “The Endless River,” was the first South African film to be nominated for the Golden Lion.
“‘Moffie’ is a brilliant cinematic vision with a powerful message that will inspire audiences and critics alike,” Arianna Bocco, president of IFC Films, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to come on board with such an accomplished film and singular directorial voice.”

Nicola Pearcey, longtime president of Lionsgate UK and Europe, is leaving the company after 14 years to “pursue new opportunities”.
A replacement has yet to be announced for Pearcey, who will step down from her role at the end of 2020. The moves comes less than four months since Lionsgate revealed Zygi Kamasa was to exit his role as CEO of Lionsgate UK and Europe after 15 years, with Pearcey taking on his duties.

“House of the Dragon,” HBO’s upcoming prequel to “Game of Thrones,” has acquired one of its leading men. Paddy Considine, who starred in HBO’s “The Outsider” and “The Third Day,” will portray King Viserys Targaryen in the upcoming series.
HBO’s description for Considine’s character reads:
Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from “Game of Thrones,” good men do not necessarily make for great kings.
“House of the Dragon” was announced by HBO in November 2019. The 10-episode prequel series is co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who executive produce alongside Miguel Sapochnik, Vince Gerardis, and Sara Lee Hess. Sapochnik will direct the pilot and a handful of other episodes.

When Sherlock debuted a decade ago on the BBC, it was unlike anything else on television. For one, the format was a bit odd: one season of three 90-minute episodes. For another, it didn’t look like anything else on TV: Text messages that appear as part of the mise-en-scène. Edits and scene transitions that move us elegantly and efficiently through space and time. All part of a visual language that brings us into the mind of one of the cleverest characters in all of pop culture as he does what he does best: solves mysteries.
While TV is famously more of a writer’s than a director’s medium, the filmmaker behind the camera for a series pilot has an immense impact on the tone of the show. They are the creator who crafts the visual language for the series, the one whose style all subsequent series directors will...

Caitlin Moran is kind of a big deal. A multi-award winning journalist, a highly influential feminist after her non-fiction book How To Be A Woman, and now a successful movie screenwriter as her novel How To Build A Girl Comes to the big screen. Or rather it would have, were it not for COVID19, instead the movie lands on Amazon Prime after it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year.
How To Build A Girl is the semi-autobiographical story of Johanna Morrigan, a 16-year-old from a big family growing up in Wolverhampton in the ‘90s. With How To Be A Woman and the TV series Raised By Wolves Moran has told stories of her childhood before but this particular version is centred on her early career as a music journalist. To celebrate the release of How To Build A Girl, which makes its way to Amazon Prime Video, we sat down with some of the cast and filmmakers to chat about bringing the best-selling book to the screen.
Based on Moran’s novel of the same name, the semi-autobiographical film sees a gutsy, working-class teenager from Wolverhampton, Johanna Morrigan, played by Beanie Feldstein, enter the world of early 90s music journalism where she is forced to learn industry ropes and how to be a decent person.

In the middle of our conversation with journalist and author Caitlin Moran, she turns around to reveal a storyboard for her next project – a utopian sci-fi described as a cross between Weird Science and The Handmaid’s Tale. Whether that sounds appealing will depend largely on whether you’ve found yourself enraptured by Moran’s unique blend of whimsy and wit before.
“All sci-fi films are dystopian. It’s always about the future and how technology has bombed us and we’re all fucked. I think that’s because generally, men make them, but technology is amazing, particularly for women,” she says.
“Every time we have a piece of technology that allows us to compete on an equal field because it’s just about your brains rather than the physicality or whether we’re looking after children or parents or are a carer that’s a benefit for us and I...

This week sees the streaming debut of director Coky Diedroyc’s film adaptation of How to Build a Girl, written by music journalist turned author/screenwriter Caitlin Moran. Moran’s semi-autobiographical script (adapted from her own novel) sees a gutsy, working-class teenager from Wolverhampton, Johanna Morrigan, played by Beanie Feldstein, enter the world of early 90s music journalism where she is forced to learn industry ropes and how to be a decent person.
Set during the during pre-Britpop indie rock scene, the story takes us to a time that feels long ago but is far from forgotten in the minds and hearts of music fans. Htbag also boasts an impressive supporting cast including Paddy Considine, Emma Thompson, Michael Sheen, Gemma Arterton, Chris O’Dowd and Alfie Allen amongst many others.
Back in 2018, Heyuguys visited the Htbag shoot in Dollis Hill, North West London, where a working man’s club doubled up for a grubby gig venue.

A teenage fan persuades her idols to let her manage them – before it all goes wrong on a tour of the Cotswolds
This insipid confection about a 17-year-old A-level student who passes herself off as older in order to manage a band she admires is so blandly wholesome and inoffensive, given the music-scene milieu, you can only assume it’s intended for the pre-teen market. Perhaps it’s meant to access the little sisters and brothers of the demographic that will go for How to Build a Girl, a considerably naughtier, wittier music-themed coming-of-age flick adapted from Caitlin Moran’s semi-autobiographical novel that comes out next week. The comparison is perhaps unfair because this film is about as accurate a reflection of how people break into the music business as In the Night Garden is about temperate-zone forest habitats.

In this strange new moviegoing ecosystem, IFC Films is one indie distributor doing well despite the hurdles of releasing content amid the ongoing pandemic. Not only did the arthouse platform just cross the $2-million mark overall at the drive-in box office with the release of “Relic,” but IFC also is currently in the lead in getting out films to Oscar voters on the Academy’s new screening platform.
Right now, nine films out of 19 contending for Academy eyeballs in the online screening room come from IFC, and they include “Premature,” “Swallow,” “Resistance,” “The Other Lamb,” “True History of the Kelly Gang,” “The Wretched,” “How to Build a Girl,” “The Trip to Greece,” and “Babyteeth.” IFC has had a strong 2020 slate, earning critical buzz and solid VOD returns including for “Relic,” which with drive-in play and digital play combined has earned more than $580,000 since opening on Friday, July 10. Red carpets remain rolled up; theater reopenings are uncertain. And if you’re a publicist responsible for touting the latest in VOD, that means redefining success. Their goals are the same — make people want to see the movie or TV show and raise the profile of the project — but what does that look like when themed premieres and Instagram moments are nonstarters?
“Since social media results are the most salient Roi for virtual events, we’ve adjusted our lists slightly to focus more on filmmakers and influencers who have a voice on social media,” said Darin Pfeiffer of Pfeiffer Consulting. “While there are of course key tastemakers like Paul Thomas Anderson who aren’t on social media that we’ll always invite, we’ve definitely given priority to those who have a productive voice on social media.”

I’ll declare my interest. I’m a Brummie, so any film set in my home city, or the West Midlands, is going to grab my interest. Especially when it comes to the cast’s efforts to reproduce that accent. It’s the one I’ve spent most of my life trying to shake off, the one that always comes last in popularity polls because it sounds like one long whinge – and the one that’s notoriously difficult to imitate convincingly.
It’s Beanie Feldstein who finds herself in the dock. Her 16 year old Johanna in How To Build A Girl lives on a council estate in Wolverhampton, has half a bedroom to herself and goes to the local comprehensive, where she’s regarded as something of an oddity. But she has big dreams of getting out of what she considers to be a life beneath her and she blags...

A new month means a new crop of streaming offerings on Prime Video UK, and July’s highlights include a second season of Amazon Original Hanna and the complete series of Mad Men to keep you busy. Newer library films include Knives Out starring Daniel Craig and his magnificently over the top accent, Countdown (that horror movie about the app that kills you in three days), Roland Emmerich’s Midway and coming of age comedy How to Build a Girl.
Elsewhere on Prime Video channels, Starzplay has a monopoly with The Great Season 1, Ramy Season 2 and the streaming rights to Doom Patrol Season 2, which will get underway mid-month. Don’t sleep on Doom Patrol – it’s worth the Starzplay subscription price alone, it’s that good!
You’ll also be able to buy Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island and Scoob! in July.
