Image
Theatre for a New Audience will present Taylor Mac’s Prosperous Fools (June 1–29), directed by Darko Tresnjak. Prosperous Fools, very loosely inspired by Moliere’s 17th Century classic Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, is a comedy of manners for an age with no manners. This dizzying satire unfolds during the leadup to a gala for an American not-for-profit dance company rehearsing excerpts from a ballet. Mac and a powerhouse ensemble cast perform a carnivalesque play within a play lampooning cultural philanthropy. Prosperous Fools’ company features seven actors, four dancers, and three musicians: Sierra Boggess as ####-###, Kaliswa Brewster as Intern, Aerina...

‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘Fifty Shades,’ and ‘Fear’ Director James Foley Dead at 71
Image
Acclaimed director James Foley has died at age 71. A representative for the Foley family confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the filmmaker passed “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a years-long struggle with brain cancer.” It is unclear when Foley was diagnosed and for how long his illness was.

Foley most famously helmed the 1992 film adaptation of David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross,” starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey. Foley would later reunite with Spacey for 12 episodes of Netflix’s first-ever series, “House of Cards.”

James Foley, ‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘House of Cards’ Director, Dies at 71
Image
James Foley, director of films including “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “At Close Range” and “Fear,” died at his home in Los Angeles earlier this week.

He died after a year-long struggle with brain cancer, according to a rep.

Foley worked with stars including Sean Penn, Madonna, Al Pacino and Halle Berry, and specialized in atmosphere-soaked, noir-adjacent stories.

His first feature was 1984’s musical romance drama “Reckless,” starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn. Foley followed that with “At Close Range,” starring Penn and Christopher Walken in a neo-noir that included the Madonna song “Live to Tell.” Madonna was married to Penn at the time, and Foley went on to work with Madonna several times, directing music videos and her feature “Who’s That Girl.” The screwball comedy bombed, and Foley told FilmInk, “It was a major life experience. That first failure is so shocking.”

“Glengarry Glen Ross” was one of his most high-profile films,...

Character details are under wraps. As previously announced, Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson and Cch Pounder are also set.

‘Freaks and Geeks’ Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
Before Euphoria had teens crying in glitter and Stranger Things brought back scrunchies, Freaks and Geeks was the ultimate throwback teen drama. Created by Paul Feig and backed by Judd Apatow, this one-season wonder gave us everything—awkward crushes, garage band dreams, and hallway drama set in the glorious chaos of the ’80s.

However, despite its popularity and Emmy win, Freaks and Geeks was canceled after 18 episodes. Struggling with ratings, the show was unfairly booted off TV. Yet, the geeks and freaks from the series managed to climb up the ladder of fame, following this 1999 dramedy. So today, let’s check out what the gang’s up to in 2025!

10. Natasha Melnick as Cindy Sanders

After watching myriad shows, we’ve finally concluded that every teen show needs that one totally-out-of-your-league crush. So, in Freaks and Geeks, Natasha Melnick played that soft-spoken cheerleader Cindy Sanders, who had poor Sam Weir stumbling...

‘Saturday Night Live’ Has Pocketed More Than $100 Million from New York Taxpayers
Image
Manhattanites pay good money for that “Live from New York!” shout-out every weekend on Saturday Night Live. According to The New York Times, the show has received $111 million in tax incentives since 2017.

That’s a Staten Island ferry full of cash, though SNL isn’t the biggest beneficiary. The Blacklist, Blue Bloods, Billions, Bull and Madam Secretary also received nine figures worth of incentives, with The Blacklist leading the way at $170 million total over that same span of years.

But SNL’s total is nothing to sneeze at. New York residents are practically producers at this point, with each of the state’s households contributing a couple of bucks a year to defray the cost of Kenan Thompson’s wigs.

Why all the cash for SNL and other productions?

In theory, when films and TV shows are created in any state, jobs are created that offset incentive costs. New York — again,...

'Road House 2' Will See Jake Gyllenhaal Reunite With Director Guy Ritchie
Image
The Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the 80s action classic Road House was a big hit for Amazon last year, and the sequel has now snatched up the perfect director. After some rumor and speculation, it has now been confirmed that Gyllenhaal will reunite with The Covenant director Guy Ritchie for Road House 2, with Will Beall writing the script.

As per a report by Deadline, plot details for Road House 2 are currently being kept under wraps, with Ritchie taking over the reins for the action franchise from the first outing’s Doug Liman following the latter’s frustration with Amazon skipping theaters and debuting the movie on their streaming platform Prime Video. It is not yet known whether the sequel will do the same or hit the big screen.

Released last year and directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay written by Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys) and...

Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Spotlight - Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Holly Hunter will shine in the lead role
Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Set in the 32nd century as a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be a series departure from the usual Star Trek canon that follows the adventures of a Federation starship and its captain and crew rather than the faculty and young cadets of Earth’s Starfleet Academy. With Helen Hunt cast as the Academy's captain and chancellor, it will be the third time a Star Trek series is led by a female captain, following Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathyrn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager and Sonequa Martin-Green’s Captain Michael Burnham of Star Trek: Discovery.

Holly Hunter is the only Academy Award winner (The Piano) in an acting category to be cast as the lead in a prime-time Star Trek series. Of course, there have been several Oscar winners to be cast in supportive Star Trek series roles, who have won the golden statue, such...

‘Band of Brothers’ Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
There are a few shows or movies that set a standard and a template for a whole genre. HBO’s 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers not only did that for war dramas but also launched and boosted many acting careers. The series, created by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, presented real-life events of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division throughout World War II.

The ensemble cast of Band of Brothers is one of the main reasons people still remember the show. Apart from playing the roles of soldiers, actors like Scott Grimes as Donald Malarkey, Kirk Acevedo as Joe Toye, and Damian Lewis as Richard Winters made the audience empathize with their losses and wins and connect with their camaraderie. Now, after more than two decades since its premiere, let’s catch up with some of these talented cast members and see what they are up to.

The first of his two films, Ohio Confidential, premieres on HBO tonight, followed by the second film, Wealth of the Wicked, on Wednesday. Anthony Edwards & J. Smith-Cameron Join FX Drama Pilot ‘Seven Sisters’
Image
Exclusive: Anthony Edwards and J. Smith-Cameron join Elizabeth Olsen and Cristin Milioti in the FX drama pilot Seven Sisters.

The project, from FX Productions, follows a large, tight-knit family that begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing them to confront long-buried secrets.

We hear that Edwards will portray family patriarch Paul Bosco and Smith-Cameron will portray his wife, Francesca, in series regular roles should the pilot get picked up to series. They join Milioti, who we revealed yesterday will portray Olsen’s character’s sister.

Seven Sisters is executive produced by Will Arbery, who wrote the pilot; Sean Durkin, who will direct it; and Garrett Basch. If the pilot goes forward, it would mark Basch’s fifth series for FX, where his company Dive has a long-standing first-look deal, following Devs, Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows...

Peter Bart: Bilious Billionaires Fret About Low Public Approval As Even Their Prolific Movie Ventures Lose Sizzle
Image
These aren’t fun times for billionaires, even though their number keeps proliferating along with their numbers — there are now at least 17 documented “super billionaires” with assets of more than $100 billion. Still, Elon Musk’s Tesla dealerships are being torched, Jeff Bezos’ newspaper is under siege, and Mark Zuckerberg is trying to suppress a new book titled Careless People.

Even Larry Ellison and his son David are having trouble closing their Paramount deal as new interlopers and random Trump bureaucrats intrude. It’s no wonder that Billions, the TV series, ended its run.

Walt Disney, for one, would have been exasperated by the issues overtaking the mega-rich today and, given the environment, might never have greenlighted Snow White — details below.

Whenever Hollywood hit troubled times in the past, two or three Medici-like billionaires would start writing checks and be warmly welcomed into the community. Even flakey Howard Hughes won applause...

Image
Suits LA continues its appearance of original Suits characters in reunion style. Everyone's favorite former Pearson Hardman partner is making a return. Costabile will be a guest star in one of the upcoming episodes, but it's not clear which one — keeping viewers of the American Legal Drama curious to see when he will pop up. In the original series, Costabile's character was a bit of a problem for Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht, and Jessica Pearson, portrayed by Gina Torres.

Image
Another “Suits” alum is coming to “Suits LA.” Variety has learned exclusively that David Costabile is set to appear on the recently-launched NBC series, reprising the role of Daniel Hardman.

Costabile will appear in a guest star role in a future episode, but exact details are being kept under wraps. He will be the latest original “Suits” actor to appear on “Suits LA,” joining both Gabriel Macht and Rick Hoffman.

In the original series, Hardman was formerly a partner at Pearson Hardman before he was forced out of the firm when it was discovered he was embezzling money to finance an affair, originally claiming he was doing so to help his dying wife. He would appear throughout the course of the show in various attempts to take over the firm and cause problems for Harvey and Jessica.

‘Outerlands’ Review: A Slow-Burn Nonbinary Drama Set in a Changing San Francisco
Image
Elena Oxman’s “Outerlands” is a film of great cinematic sleight of hand. The withdrawn San Francisco drama, about lonely nonbinary nanny and restaurant server Cass (Asia Kate Dillon), is simple in its presentation, but disguises numerous layers to its story. These eventually unravel, and build to an emotional wallop. When work crush Kalli (Louisa Krause) suddenly leaves town, Cass is placed in charge of her quiet but headstrong 11-year-old daughter, Ari (Ridley Asha Bateman). The longer Kalli stays away, the more Cass is forced to reckon not just with the possibility that Ari has been abandoned, but with their own childhood abandonment, which continues to ripple in the present.

This straightforward plot is often broken up by poetic interludes, made up of languid shots of a changing cityscape. Once a bustling queer capital, the inequality plaguing San Francisco has reached something of a breaking point. On one side stand tech company high rises.

SXSW 2025 Review: Fucktoys, A Filth-filled Odyssey Though A Punk Rock Wonderland
Image
A sometime sex worker longs for love in director/writer/star Annapurna Sriram’s chaotic debut feature film, Fucktoys. We meet AP (Sriram) mid-tarot reading, sitting in the middle of a swamp, listening to the wisdom of a psychic played by iconic rapper, Big Freedia. Desperate to make a positive turn in her life, AP begs for a solution to her overall ills, to which the tarot woman immediately shoots back: it’s gonna be $1,000 and she’s going to have to slit the throat of a lamb. In possession of neither a lamb, nor $1,000, AP now has a quest, and she will not be denied. Sriram may be familiar to viewers from her appearances in Billions or The Blacklist, but she’s mostly flown under the radar working...

‘Black Mirror’ Drops Season 7 April Premiere Date, Teases ‘Bandersnatch’ Sequel | Video
Image
Because the world does not feel dystopian enough, “Black Mirror” is finally releasing its Season 7 premiere date. The sci-fi anthology from Charlie Brooker will return on April 10 with six new episodes.

This new season will contain a previously announced followup to the Emmy-winning “USS Callister” starring Cristin Milioti. Fittingly, the trailer for this new season starts with Milioti’s Lieutenant Cole gasping as an unseen voice says “We’d like to welcome you back.”

The trailer then cycles between clips of wild scenarios that are never fully explained. One minute, a man is putting on a Batman mask. The next, Issa Rae is being transported into a black-and-white world filled with AI people. Still the next, Rashida Jones collapses like a powered off robot while pitching cereal in front of a class of children. You know, classic “Black Mirror” stuff.

But the most exciting part of this first trailer does...

‘Bunny’ Review: An Off-the-Wall Indie Comedy That Celebrates the Enduring Rowdiness of Downtown Manhattan
Image
Once upon a time, mostly in the 1980s and 90s, the downtown Manhattan indie movie was a thing. Films like Jim Jarmusch’s Permanent Vacation, Edo Bertoglio’s Downtown 81, Larry Clark’s Kids and, later on, early Safdie brothers efforts like The Pleasure of Being Robbed were gritty off-the-cuff street features made on tiny budgets, shouldered by directors looking to capture the weird and wild world below 14th Street.

But living in that part of the city soon became expensive, and more expensive, and even more expensive — to the point that many writers, artists and filmmakers were priced out of their neighborhoods. Shooting in Manhattan also became exorbitantly costly, leaving room for only well-funded TV shows like Law & Order, Billions or Succession. Even the latest NYC-set Safdie joint (directed by Josh Safdie in his first solo effort) is an epic period piece, starring Timothée Chalamet, with a budget estimated between $50-$70 million.

‘F*cktoys’ Review: A Sex Worker Tries to Break a Mystical Curse in Annapurna Sriram’s Messy and Exciting Genre Mash-Up
Image
With a title like “Fucktoys,” Annapurna Sriram’s directorial debut boldly announces its wild intentions. A provocative name like that has been known to backfire, especially as it can over-inflate one’s expectations for the gonzo filmmaking they’re about to witness. But Sriram’s movie — a grotesque odyssey through a place called Trashtown, which has shades of New Orleans and a hint of Los Angeles — is at least impressively strange. It’s the kind of project that, despite some flaws, allows Sriram to stake her claim as a filmmaker to watch, with a distinctive voice that mashes up rockabilly aesthetics with Tarot mysticism and an incredible dig at James Franco. This is the kind of thing you want to see at a festival like SXSW: Messy, but wholly original in its genre mashup.

As an actress, Sriram appeared on the likes of “Billions” and “The Blacklist,” shows that are tonally miles apart from “Fucktoys.

‘F—toys’ Mastermind Annapurna Sriram Was Sick of Being Pigeonholed in Hollywood, So She Channeled John Waters to Make Her Gonzo Sexual Fantasia Debuting at SXSW
Image
Annapurna Sriram has a lengthy showbiz resume, acting in massive series like “The Blacklist” and “Billions,” indie films and other projects. Yet, after a childhood obsessed with daring cinema from auteurs like John Waters, she didn’t feel she was living up to her creative potential.

“As an actor who is ethnically ambiguous, I was getting pigeonholed into a lot of really boring, sort of racial stereotypes,” Sriram says. “‘You’re the brown girl with a headscarf whose parents have an arranged marriage. You’re the doctor in this.’ So I felt like that didn’t excite me, and if I wanted to be a doctor, I’d just be a doctor. I’d make a lot more money, and my parents wouldn’t stress out so much.”

So began the long genesis of “Fucktoys,” her debut feature which is set to premiere tonight at the SXSW TV & Film Festival.

The duo detoured a little bit after that, taking on Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” and directing TV such as “Billions,” “Mrs.

Just wrapping up its amazing run on HBO, Succession was one of the biggest hits of the network. It revolved around the Roys, a family of beyond-rich business tycoons seeking more power. That led to scores of backstabbing and dark comedy of this truly dysfunctional family trying to work together.
