Fighter Box Office Collection Day 1 Vs Last 10 Republic Day Releases (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone’s Fighter opened at the box office, and it did not perform as expected. The two main reasons might be the cold wave throughout the north and the day of release being a working day. The film was collected in the range of 21 – 22 crore on the opening day.
However, Dp and Hrithik’s opening at the box office has earned fairly well if compared to the last 10 Republic Day releases in the last seven years. From 2015 to 2023, 11 films were released in this period of 8 years.
Except for Pathaan, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone and released on Republic Day weekend, 2023, most of the other films have faired decently or poorly. Only a few have managed to earn in the same range as Fighter’s opening-day collection.

Many pets displaced by the historic wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui can rest easier as help arrives. Greater Good Charities, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and Southwest Airlines joined forces to help rescue vulnerable pets via airlift.
Southwest Airlines sent a plane full of humanitarian supplies intended for both pets and people to the Hawaiian island. However, when the plane made its return trip, it was not entirely empty.
Greater Good Charities had a veterinarian on the ground doing double checks of all the animals, and then the pets were distributed for adoption.
Dozens of volunteers helped to prepare over 130 adoptable shelter pets from the Maui Humane Society who were then flown to shelters in the Pacific Northwest to find their forever homes. This was in an effort to make more room for those pets displaced or injured by the destructive wildfires. The airlifted pets were able to be adopted before the wildfires began.

‘Bhed Chaal’ is a Hindi proverb very much used in relation to the Hindi film industry. It means that one huge success is followed by numerous other attempts. Original ideas are at a premium in the Hindi film industry. The makers either depend on a foreign film, or a novel, or a South Indian film for a subject.
Filmmakers always want to play safe because the risk factor is always high. The distributor, while being wined and dined, gets a sales pitch, like “Zanjeer se kam nahi hamari picture…” and such. Many smaller-budget imitations of ‘Sholay’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewaar’ and other such films flooded the market. That is to say, if one action film worked, many more were certain to follow.

Mumbai, Dec 2 (Ians) Actress Mrunal Thakur says she likes to pick her roles based on stories and emotions, and not on the star quotient associated with the projects.
"Every co-star offers you a unique perspective. From some it's experience, from some it's the craft and from some it's their raw energy," Mrunal said.
"I worked with Abhimanyu (Dassani) in 'Aankh Micholi' and he was such a hoot in 'Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota'. There's so much raw energy in him that he is capable of holding the scene all by himself. In 'Pippa', I will work with Ishaan Khatter and Priyanshu Painyuli, both of whom are just exemplary at what they do. In the end, I choose a film based on how brilliant the story is and how it will help me further my acting and better my craft. We live in times when content is king," she added.

EntertainmentSome of these films have retained the origins of the character though the language is Hindi while others have completely changed their identity. Tnm StaffThe newly released biopic Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl has opened to good reviews but has also snowballed into a controversy for supposedly distorting facts about the Indian Air Force. More importantly, the film does not show Iaf pilot Sreevidya Rajan from Kerala, who also served in the Kargil war with Gunjan. Sreevidya has, in fact, said that she was the first woman Iaf officer to fly in a combat zone and not Gunjan as the film suggests. Though the makers have said that the film is a fictionalised account, it has drawn sharp criticism for these departures. While Bollywood has made several biopics and films based on real life incidents, the southern industries are slowly catching up with the trend. Perhaps in future, south Indian...

Exclusive: We are getting a major new clue about the upcoming eighth and final season of Showtime’s terrorism drama Homeland. Nimrat Kaur and Numan Acar, who had major recurring roles in Season 4, are rejoining the cast for the upcoming eighth and final season.
Kaur and Acar played Tasneem Qureshi, a member of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, and Haissam Haqqani, a Taliban leader, respectively, in Season 4, which was set in Afghanistan and Pakistan. No setting has been announced for the upcoming final chapter of Homeland, which is set to film in Morocco, but there has been speculation that it would be set entirely or partially in Pakistan/Afghanistan. Kaur and Acar’s return certainly support such plot line.
The Alex Gansa-Howard Gordon political thriller, based on an Israeli format, had alternated domestic and international settings, with the action based primarily in New York and Washington D.C. the last two seasons.

Vikram Malhotra’s Abundantia Entertainment is set to produce a film, entitled Runway, based on a true story that took place during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
The incident, often referred to as India’s Pearl Harbour, involved the destruction of an airstrip in the city of Bhuj, along with several Indian Air Force airstrips, by Pakistani bombers in December 1971.
Indian authorities only had 72 hours to repair the airstrips in order for fighter planes to take off and land. A group of around 300 local villagers,...

KollywoodWhile nationalism is a popular theme in Tamil cinema, it does not equate it with supporting the Centre as in mainstream Bollywood flicks.Sowmya RajendranPS Mithran’s Irumbuthirai, starring Vishal, Arjun, Samantha, Delhi Ganesh and others, is doing well at the box office. In what seems to be a trend that’s gaining popularity in Kollywood, the film takes on the central government, this time questioning the security of Aadhaar data. Irumbuthirai raises some valid questions on data breaches, even if the film may stumble at times with the need to pump up the hero and age-old justifications for giving in to dowry demands. It also slams the central government’s much publicised ‘Digital India’ and takes potshots at demonetisation, ‘cashless’ economy and Gst. And, of course, the fact that people like Vijay Mallya have been let off the hook while ordinary folks are harassed by loan sharks finds its place. Interestingly, Ps Mithran put together the project in August 2016 and the film was ready for release in early 2018, just around the time when the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke out in March. However, it had to be postponed because of the Tamil film industry strike. While watching Irumbuthirai, however, one cannot help but notice how uncannily timely the film is. Towards the end, we’re told that in the future even our votes will be controlled by those who have our data. Given the scepticism around electronic voting machines, platforms like Facebook manipulating the political preferences of users, and concerns about misuse of Aadhaar data, the team has been quite brave in handling such a subject. Vijay’s Deepavali release Mersal last year famously got into a tussle with the Bjp for certain dialogues and scenes that made fun of demonetisation and the Gst. While some of the lines presented as facts in the film were straight out of WhatsApp university, the fact that a mainstream film with a big star was speaking about it showed that Kollywood wasn’t going to pander to the Centre in the same way as mainstream Bollywood films have. Take the difference in treatment between Joker and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, for instance. Both are films about a couple whose relationship depends on whether or not a toilet is built in the house. While the Tamil film was a tragedy that exposed the hollowness of government schemes, the Akshay Kumar starrer was in unapologetic support of the current central government and laid the blame on the people (and earlier governments) for the practice of open defecation. Akshay Kumar has been beating the nationalism drum for a while now (and winning a National Award while at it), whether in Airlift or Padman, and there are even reports doing the rounds that he’s all set to star in a film about the RSS. Irumbuthirai, on the other hand, has a hero who is surprisingly “anti-national”. He’s an army major whose only aim is to get out of India – a sharp contrast to the patriotic ‘jawan at the border’ the public is always asked to think about whenever they object to a government policy. Although Vishal’s Kathiravan does become more responsible and socially conscious as the film progresses, there’s no overcompensation with unnecessary lines on nationalism. It’s not that Tamil films have never indulged in whipping up nationalism. In fact, Irumbuthirai’s villain, Arjun Sarja, has played such roles in many films in his career. The ‘Action King’, as he’s known, has starred in several films where the plot revolves around fighting terrorists or taking on social evils for the benefit of the country – Gentleman, Jai Hind, Kurudhipunal, Mudhalvan, Thaayin Manikodi, and more recently Nibunan, in which he appeared as a police officer with a national flag tattoo. Actor turned politician Vijayakanth, too, has played such roles in several films. Nationalism is still a popular theme in Tamil cinema as it was in the days of Mgr and Sivaji Ganesan. Mani Ratnam’s Kaatru Veliyidai, for example, included a cringeworthy scene when the Pakistani flag falls down just to get a few whistles from the audience. In that sense, the nationalism that's showcased in Hindi films like Dangal is considered appealing here, too. However, the success of Irumbuthirai shows that a film that questions authority and real life government policies are welcomed by the audience in Tamil Nadu. That is, nationalism/patriotism is not equated to supporting the central govenment's policies or stances unlike the trend in mainstream Bollywood. This isn’t a sudden change. Soon after the jallikattu protests in January 2017, Tamil popular culture was full of references to the sport. The protests were widely believed to have been triggered by the cultural imposition of the Centre in Tamil Nadu. From filmmakers announcing projects about jallikattu to songs dedicated to the sport, Kollywood stood with the public mood. Several prominent members from the industry also spoke up in support of the sport, including stars like Kamal Haasan and Vijay. The teaser for Pa Ranjith’s upcoming film Kaala, with Rajinikanth in the lead role, hints that the film will have political references to schemes like Swachch Bharath. While the antagonist, played by Nana Patekar, says that he wants to make everything ‘clean’, Kaala (Rajinikanth) extols the virtues of black, equating it with the sweat and labour of his people. Tamil Nadu’s people have many a bone to pick with the Centre, whether it is jallikattu, the Neet exam, the Cauvery Management Board or the attempts to ‘Hindify’ the south. The Tamil film industry, which has birthed several leaders in the state (including the latest entrants Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan), has always had a close relationship with politics. With the public mood ostensibly against the Centre, one can expect many more Tamil films to indulge in a jallikattu with its policies. MollywoodWith realistic, rooted and relevant content, Malayalam cinema has won big at the National Awards this year.Siddarth SrinivasQuality content at a shoestring budget. Touching globally accessible topics in a laid-back rural setting. Having even their top actors deliver three to four films a year. Emotionally driving their audiences to the verge of breaking them, and then surprising them in a lovely fashion with a smart turn. These are factors that other film industries in India might see as ‘experimental’. But for the Malayalam film industry, this is their modus operandi. The recently announced National Awards are a shining feather in the cap for Malayalam cinema, which has finally got the blazing recognition that it has deserved for a long while. Jury head Shekhar Kapur came out and hailed the quality of regional cinema as ‘world-beating’, and subsequently, the majority of the honours were gobbled up by the Malayalam film industry. Quietly producing impressive films at the snap of a finger, it is high time that the rest of India looks up to this heavily talented fraternity, who believe in rooted and relevant content, nothing else. And arguably so, Dileesh Pothan’s Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum has been the show-stealer at the National Awards. The harder it gets for an individual to pronounce the name of the film, the easier it has been for this Suraj Venjaramoodu, Fahadh Faasil, and Nimisha Sajayan starrer to unanimously win appreciation from whoever has seen it. Easily referred to as the ‘chain snatcher film’, this film was a slow-burn crime thriller that takes off in a small village, built on just three main characters – a couple and a thief played by the flawless Fahadh Faasil, who won himself the award for the Best Supporting Actor. What makes Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum stand out from the rest is the constant tension that the film keeps building, without any loud or jarring moments. There’s a sense of doubt that always prevails with the viewer, which the director and writer (Sajeev Pazhoor, who won the award for the Best Original Screenplay) cleverly handle until the very end when they pull out the trump card and surprise the audience, leaving them terrified. It is the whole style and narrative pattern which Dileesh adopts, which is new to the mainstream viewer. Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum is such a cracker due to these reasons, and makes Dileesh an exciting director to watch out for – with both his films bagging National Awards. Period drama Bhayanakam was the next in line to take home pride for Mollywood, winning three awards across different categories. The film, which talks about the troubles faced by a postman during the Second World War in 1939 is reportedly a solid portrayal of the issues a common man has to face. 6-time National Award winner Jayaraj bettered his best by winning two awards – Best Director and the Best Adapted Screenplay (since it has been adapted from Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai’s novel Kayar). Bhayanakam is yet to hit the theatres, and the director has assured that it will release in May. Mahesh Narayan’s Take Off too, distinguished itself at the National Awards. It is one of the neatest films to come out of Mollywood in recent years, despite its delicate premise. While Bollywood blockbusters such as Airlift and Tiger Zinda Hai dealt with the same concept with a commercial and hero-centric approach, Take Off puts its characters (special jury mention for Parvathy) under really tense and worrying situations, enabling the viewer to get to the core of the problem and witness the protagonists find their way out. The film also stays as real to the events as possible, straying away from commercial compromises. And equally real, are the sets and art work – the award for the Best Production Design went to Santhosh Raman for the same film. The icing on the cake was definitely Kj Yesudas’s eighth National Award for the song ‘Poi Maranja Kaalam’ from Viswapoorvam Mansoor, which happened to be his first award in 25 years, since 1993. Yesudas has won the National Award for the Best Playback Singer – Male a record number of times. The second in line is Sp Balasubramanyan with six awards. 66 films were in consideration for the National Awards from Mollywood, a number which in itself is a towering one when compared to the offerings from the neighboring states which have bigger film industries. With the growing multiplex culture and metros playing films with subtitles, Malayalam films are gaining popularity in other states, too. The win at the National Awards will only encourage more people to experience this realistic brand of cinema.

Chef
Starring Saif Ali Khan, Padmapriya Janakiraman, Svar Kamble
Directed by Raja Krishna Menon
There is a lot of teasing between the father and son, played with endearing casualness by Saif Ali Khan and Svar Kamble. Aptly, Chef teases our appetite for cinema. It’s a culinary delight—warm, tender, inviting and appetizing– served up in a dainty dish with a dash of debonair but played-down posturing, like a masterchef who is shy to show off his skills but can’t help it. He’s so adept at what he does.
Chef conveys the kind of sagacious skill born not out of arrogance but wisdom sometimes misplaced. Like the protagonist Roshan Kalra’s traditionalist father who believes the kitchen is for women.
Speaking of which—arrogance more than wisdom—Saif Ali Khan’s Roshan Kalra (from Chandni Chowk Delhi married to and divorced from the lovely Malayali danseuse Radha Menon...
