Exclusive: Mather Zickel (Better Things) will star alongside Olivia Applegate, Clé Bennett, Zoé De Grand Maison, Nicholas Logan Sam Trammell and Jessica Frances Dukes in Michael Patrick Jann’s Western horror film Organ Trail for Paramount Pictures, which has wrapped production.
The film written by Meg Turner finds a young Abigale Archer friendless and alone in a brutal Montana winter during the 1870s—fighting for survival and to retrieve her one earthly possession, her family’s horse, from a gang of bloodthirsty bandits. Zickel is playing Pa Archer, a gaunt but imposing figurehead that has a commanding energy balanced by an instinctive compassion. In the throes of a brutal Montana winter, Pa’s steadfastness and sense of purpose—along with the skills he learned as a soldier in the Civil War—are the foundation on which his family’s survival rests. The Amazon horror anthology “Them” is building out its main cast.
Variety has learned exclusively that seven new cast members have been added to the first season of the series, which is titled “Them: Covenant.” Shahadi Wright Joseph, Alison Pill, Ryan Kwanten, Melody Hurd, Javier Botet, and Percy Hynes White have all been cast as series regulars, while Derek Phillips has been cast in a recurring role. They join previously announced leads Deborah Ayorinde and Ashley Thomas.
“Them: Covenant” is set in 1953 and centers on Henry and Lucky Emory (Ayorinde and Thomas), who decide to move their family from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood. The family’s home on a tree-lined, seemingly idyllic street becomes ground zero where malevolent forces both real and supernatural threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.
Joseph had a breakout year in 2019, starring in both Jordan Peele’s “Us” and the remake of “The Lion King.

Zak Knutson’s Supercon is a caper comedy set around the world of the fan conventions, in which a group of not incredibly successful actors and comic book artists get fired from the titular con and decide to get even by stealing the money that belongs to the con’s boss and to a former star who is actually just a jerk. Clancy Brown plays the film’s main antagonist Adam King, an actor who is quite full of himself. Once he arrives at the convention, he charges the fans huge amounts of money for a photo or an autograph, bullies his ex TV co-star Keith Mahar (Russell Peters), and in general just acts like an arrogant, greedy prick who evidently doesn’t care at all about pop culture...

One of those comedies so incessantly and aggressively unfunny that you begin to wonder whether that’s the joke, documentary director Zak Knutson’s first narrative feature “Supercon” is a poor stab at Christopher Guest-style ensemble antics combined with a rote heist plot. The Comic Con-esque setting ought to be a rich target for satire, but life is full of missed opportunities, and this turns out to be one of them. Not to be confused with the concurrent “Supertroopers 2” — though one suspects theater owners would love it if you did — this film will no doubt pass quickly through hardtops, doing somewhat better in a home-formats launch that also commences April 27.
A former child star on an ’80s TV show, Keith Mahar (Russell Peters) is now a disillusioned adult, and makes a bare living reluctantly attending fan conventions. (Why he hasn’t tried finding another career is a question never raised here.

Nestled in Iowa along the Mississippi River, not far from both Illinois and Wisconsin, exists a festival celebrating independent film and filmmakers that has already been named one of the Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World by MovieMaker Magazine. It’s the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, now entering its seventh year, taking place Apr. 26-29 in downtown Dubuque.
According to the festival’s executive director Susan Gorrell, that praise is matched by those who attend the festivities. “The best compliments we can get are what filmmakers say about us and the relationships we have with them,” she notes. “I truly believe Jdiff is the festival for the independent. A boutique, unique festival that brings back the importance of independent; the big big and the little guy. It’s about the art and what each individual filmmaker brings to it. Fan conventions have been becoming more and more popular in recent times. As a result, it was inevitable that people would start making movies about them, seeing as how they have become more and more prominent in the public consciousness. Regardless, interested individuals should consider checking out the red-band trailer that has been released for Supercon, which is because it is a R-rated movie. I've got an enjoyable red-band trailer here for a silly looking comedy called SuperCon. The movie is set at a comic con convention where a group of people team up and plan a heist to steal the money from the convention's biggest draw... Adam King.
With how popular comic conventions are these days, I'm surprised we aren't seeing more films like this that use them as a setting for a story.
This movie was directed by Zak Knutson and the cast includes Clancy Brown, John Malkovich, Ryan Kwanten, Maggie Grace, Mike Epps, Brooks Braselman, and Russell Peters. Here's the synopsis:
Another weekend, another comic convention for former TV actor Keith Mahar. Most people don’t recognize Keith. His only claim to fame was as a child star in an 80’s television show. "We want to take it back for the fans." Sony has released the first red band trailer for Zak Knutson's indie comedy Supercon. Yes, this is as bad as it sounds, so don't be surprised. Supercon stars comedian Russell Peters as a former TV actor named Keith Mahar, who is bored of going from convention to convention. So he teams up with his other semi-famous friends and tries to get banned from the convention. The full cast includes Ryan Kwanten, Maggie Grace, Mike Epps, Brooks Braselman, Clancy Brown, and John Malkovich (crazy enough). This looks upsettingly absurd and potentially amusingly, but I'm not so sure. It seems like they went totally overboard trying to mock cosplay and conventions, and it doesn't look that fun. Here's the official red band trailer (+ green band) for Zak Knutson's Supercon, direct from YouTube: Another weekend, another comic convention for former TV actor...

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been to at least one Comic Con. New York Comic Con will always be one of the best weekends of the year for me. It’s a sight you must see with your own eyes. It’s crowded, stinky (I saw a grown man deficate his pants last year), over-priced, but absolutely magical. There is truly nothing like it.
Supercon tells the story of former TV actor Keith Mahar (Russell Peters). The former child star and his friends – voice-over actor Matt (Ryan Kwanten), comic book artist Allison (Maggie Grace) and 80’s TV star Brock (Brooks Brasselman). Keith’s former co-star – Adam King (Clancy Brown) decides to ban this group from the convention, which sparks a plot for revenge.
Check out the trailer below:
The movie looks silly and like the type of thing you stumble upon at 4:00 a.m. on Netflix.

Comic-Con. WonderCon. BlizzCon. Supercon? Variety brings word that John Malkovich has closed a deal to headline a new comedy rooted in the crowded, sweaty and blistering world of comic book conventions.
Filming is already underway on the New Orelans set of Supercon, and comes packing a cracking premise. Malkovich, along with a host of comic book artists and TV stars past their prime, will anchor the feature as a band of down-on-their-luck industry people that make a living from attending comic book conventions.
Ticked off by their downward spiral, Malkovich and Co. set about hatching a plan to rob Supercon and “bring justice to a crooked promoter and an overbearing former TV icon.” Zak Knutson will orchestrate the shenanigans from behind the lens, working from a script he penned alongside Andrew Sipes. Joey Tufaro and Todd Trosclair produce alongside Momentum Productions’ Susan Gorrell and Maria J. McDonald.

John Malkovich has been cast in an upcoming comedy heist film called Supercon, which is set at a comic book convention.
According to Variety, the story follows "a group of washed up television stars and comic book artists who make their living attending conventions. Down on their luck, the ragtag team hashes a plot to rob the convention and bring justice to a crooked promoter and an overbearing former TV icon."
There's no information on who exactly Malkovich will be playing, but it seems like a film project he could have a lot of fun with. Whatever he ends up doing in the film, I'm sure he'll be awesome.
As someone who enjoys going to geek conventions, I love the concept for the film and it is sure to make for an entertaining movie. Supercon is being directed by Zak Knutson, who has directed several documentaries and TV specials for Kevin Smith and Marvel.
