It's been a busy year for M. Night Shyamalan. This summer, he dropped the wildly entertaining (and wildly silly) concert-set serial killer thriller "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett and Shyamalan's daughter, Saleka. The "Sixth Sense" director has several other projects in the works, but he's also been branching out as a producer, producing Ishana Shyamalan's "The Watchers" earlier this year and "Caddo Lake," co-directed by Logan George and Celine Held, this month. It's the latter film that's been climbing the streaming charts this week, with the latest viewership data from FlixPatrol listing it as the most-watched movie on HBO, home to the streaming site Max.
According to the data site, "Caddo Lake" is the most popular movie on HBO today, outpacing Gary Dauberman's long-anticipated "Salem's Lot" remake and some 2024 theatrical releases, including Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's "Bad Boys: Ride Or Die," Mark Wahlberg's inspirational stray dog flick "Arthur The King,...

Between Caddo Lake on Max, Saturday Night in theaters and his beloved New York Mets’ current playoff run, Dylan O’Brien has all his bases covered.
During a chat with THR in March of 2022, O’Brien teased the big swing that is Celine Held and Logan George’s Caddo Lake, remarking that editing would be the thriller’s deciding factor. After a lengthy delay due to 2023’s labor stoppages, Held and George’s growing family and producers wanting to ensure a spooky season release, O’Brien’s two-and-a-half-year-old assessment turned out to be right on the money. Co-written and co-directed by Held and George, their now well-received film presents itself as a drama about two working-class Texans (O’Brien’s Paris and Eliza Scanlen’s Ellie) who are trying to reconcile the loss of their respective loved ones. And in the blink of an eye, Held and George pull the rug...

Dylan O’Brien reflected on an accident that occurred while filming “The Maze Runner: The Death Cure” in 2016. In a recent interview, the actor explained how the incident impacted his approach to work. While shooting a stunt scene, O’Brien was pulled off the top of a moving vehicle and struck by another. He suffered a concussion and other injuries.
“It was life-changing,” stated O’Brien. The experience altered how he handles his career. Previously, he would comply with requests from directors without question. Now at age 33, he stands up for safety on set.
As a 24-year-old, O’Brien raised concerns about the stunt. However, producers dismissed these worries. During the shoot, the feared accident took place that halted production. O’Brien underwent a long recovery process.
The actor said it’s common for young performers to avoid being seen as “difficult.” They strive not to complain so others view them positively.

Dylan O’Brien’s experience on “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” taught him just how fragile life can be.
The actor, who says he suffered from a concussion and other physical injuries while filming the 2018 feature, told Men’s Health that his on-set accident was “life-changing” in realizing how studios can “manipulate” young stars. O’Brien was injured during a 2016 sequence involving stunts. The incident halted production for months. The film was released by 20th Century Fox on January 26, 2018.
“It was a life-changing incident. I’ve approached everything differently, you could say, particularly with regards to standing my ground on set,” O’Brien said. “It’s very commonplace in the culture for young actors to be controlled, and the way they strive to do that is by always being like, ‘Oh, don’t become difficult. Don’t be a pain in the ass.’ Or, ‘Are you complaining, are you being difficult?’ Things like that.

It’s been almost a decade since Dylan O’Brien nearly died on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure after a tragic accident. The actor was reportedly in a harness on top of a moving vehicle when he was unexpectedly pulled off and hit by another vehicle. Production was shut down while O’Brien recovered, and it took an entire year before he was able to return to finish the film. O’Brien spoke about the accident with Men’s Health, revealing that he had raised safety concerns before the accident but was ignored.
“It was a life-changing incident. I’ve approached everything differently, you could say, particularly with regards to standing my ground on set,” he said. “It’s very commonplace in the culture for young actors to be controlled, and the way they strive to do that is by always being like, Oh, don’t become difficult.

What do young adult novel adaptations, post-apocalyptic movies, and films involving shadowy corporations messing around unscrupulously have in common? For one thing, they're all a dime a dozen. For another, they're all aspects of the trilogy of films adapted from "The Maze Runner," a series of novels by author James Dashner.
Like so much YA fiction from the '00s, Dasher's novels gained a passionately loyal fan following, leading to 20th Century Fox becoming interested in developing them for the big screen in the hope that the studio would have its very own "Hunger Games." The parallels between both franchises are certainly there on the surface: preteen-to-older-teen heroes being forced to participate in deadly encounters while fighting the scourge of authoritarianism. However, where "Hunger Games" and its films are far more politically and philosophically-minded, "The Maze Runner" goes in a much more genre flick direction. It's one of the...

Ahead of its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival next week, Warner Bros. Pictures has released a brand new 30-second TV spot for Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux, offering up some fresh new footage from the highly-anticipated DC tale.
The film returns Joaquin Phoenix (Napoleon; Inherent Vice) to his Academy Award-winning role as Arthur Fleck and partners him up with fellow Oscar-winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born; House of Gucci) for an all-new musical adventure that promises to be even darker than the original billion-dollar blockbuster.
While plot details remain relatively scarce, the latest plot synopsis reveals, that the film, which boasts a 138-minute runtime, will find "Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him."

According to THR, 20th Century Studios is looking to reboot The Maze Runner franchise based on the best-selling novels by James Dashner. The studio is currently in negotiations with Jack Paglen (Transcendence) to write the script for the new film.
The Maze Runner was released in 2014 and followed a group of memory-wiped teenagers who are trapped in a walled area known as the Glade. The only way out lies beyond an ever-changing maze, which is filled with deadly mechanical creatures. The film was followed by Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015 and Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2018.

Jack Paglen (Transcendence) is in talks to write a new Maze Runner film for 20th Century Studios, Deadline can confirm.
While details as to the plot of the film are under wraps for the moment, it’s described as a continuation of the story of the last three films, released between 2014 and 2018, rather than a direct sequel.
Based on the dystopian YA book series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a group of young survivors must navigate deadly mazes, treacherous landscapes, and sinister organizations as they uncover the truth about their past and fight for their freedom. Wes Ball directed the original 2014 film, as well as sequels Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), all ahead of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario starred in the films, which grossed over $948 million worldwide in total.

Amazon MGM‘s Play Dirty is ready to announce its female lead for director Shane Black’s upcoming film. Joining Mark Wahlberg for Black’s crime thriller is Rosa Salazar. Lakeith Stanfield also stars, with a script written by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Play Dirty focuses on the “professional thief Parker (Wahlberg), who, after being double-crossed and left for dead, sees his hunt for revenge bring with it a shot at the biggest heist of his career. But even with the help of his partner, actor-slash-con artist Grofield (Stanfield), he’ll still need to outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s richest man if he hopes to stay alive.”
Rosa Salazar’s Play Dirty role remains a mystery. However, the film is inspired by Donald E Westlake’s Parker crime novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.

Throwing a bunch of teenagers into some sort of Gladiator-style arena is the pinnacle of young adult dystopian fiction, executed to perfection in franchises like "The Hunger Games." While "The Maze Runner" films also follow the same principle, the worldbuilding here is markedly different, woven deftly with interesting characters and plot developments that make it such an intriguing premise. With three movies that map the trajectory of such a grim world and its inhabitants, "The Maze Runner" emerges as a staple for those who wish to immerse themselves in its labyrinthine action and fantastical setting.
As "The Maze Runner" films are rather overlooked, at least in comparison to blockbuster offerings within the same genre, it can be a bit confusing for casual fans to denote its viewing order. Moreover, things get more complicated once we venture into its sprawling source material — James Dashner's "Maze Runner" novels extend beyond its theatrical counterparts,...

Yesterday, I emerged from a personal errand, made the mistake of opening social media, and saw my particular corner of the internet in an uproar. They were finally making a live-action movie based on the beloved "Legend of Zelda" video game series ... and Wes Ball was directing it. And everyone seemed to be grumbling about that.
Granted, my particular bubble does not necessarily represent the wider world, but I honestly thought my particular bubble would know better. In fact, I've rarely been more disappointed in my particular bubble! My particular bubble is supposed to know a thing or three about movies and the people who make them. So the wave of negativity and instant cynicism I saw surrounding this announcement made me realize I was going to have to write the article you're reading right now. This is your fault. Sorry.
Anyway: Wes Ball is an inspired choice to direct a "Legend of Zelda" movie,...

Science fiction is a fascinating film genre. It inspires dreams of extraterrestrial life, futuristic gadgets, and space travel. Today, this all seems more plausible than ever. Yet, besides reflecting society, sci-fi helps us evaluate our actions -- and their consequences.
Creating scenes with nail-biting stunts requires a collaborative effort between actors and directors. Replacing stars with stunt performers due to their physical capabilities usually works but mishaps can still happen --- both on and off camera. The film industry has seen an increase in accidents over the last decade despite the advancement of technology. According to the Los Angeles Times, from 2010 to 2019, 19 fatal injuries occurred on American film sets. As attorney Chris Deacon told the outlet, "If those engaged to work on set in whatever capacity are dying at the hands of the creative process, then something is fundamentally wrong in the production processes."
Sure, authenticity makes for a thrilling watch.

Hollywood's fascination with science fiction has produced some of the greatest thrills in movie history. "Star Wars," "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" are but a handful of films that rank high amongst genre enthusiasts for their audacious ideas, innovative visuals, originality, colorful characters, and timeless appeal. Crafting these timeless masterpieces requires significant effort and unwavering commitment, and should not be underestimated. Many production stories showcase the extent to which producers and directors are willing to go to realize their vision -- even if it comes at the cost of the actors' well-being.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn fulfills the promise he made at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, when we spied a metal incubator in the chambers of Sovereign leader Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) that housed the artificial superbeing Adam Warlock. Now in the conclusion of Gunn’s trilogy, Adam emerges – albeit prematurely – from his cocoon, charged by his mother and the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) with destroying the Guardians and returning Rocket (Bradley Cooper) to the latter, who created Rocket as part of his vile attempts at creating a perfect race.

But before he can reach his destination, his squad is intercepted by the Exiles – a dangerously advanced and perilously evil Moon-based civilisation – who destroys their ship.
Separated from his squadron, Silas crash-lands alone on Earth. But, having lost his memory in the accident, he must figure out who he is and his purpose on Earth before the Exiles find and destroy him…...

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we try to be cool like the cool kids. Who are the kids liking these days? Someone we hear they like is Dylan O’Brien, and our buddy Billy Ray Brewton joins us to break it down. Brewton runs the entertaining The Incinerator Podcast as well as the Scripts Gone Wild podcast. Together, we cover The First Time, American Assassin, Love and Monsters, and The Outfit. We also dig deep into The Maze Runner trilogy (A-Sides though they may be) and a little less deep into Taylor Swift’s All Too Well short film (of which O’Brien is the star).
There’s chatter on the nearly career-ending (nearly life-ending) accident O’Brien suffered on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure,...

Dylan O'Brien couldn't imagine returning to work after his terrifying accident in 2016. During a conversation with Bustle published March 16, the Teen Wolf alum shared how he dealt with being out of work after he was struck by a vehicle while filming a stunt on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure. "I was really struggling," he told the publication. "I never stopped working until that accident. It's a really strange thing to have so much of my identity be my career and then have this thing happen to me where I was convinced that I couldn't do it anymore. I was just like, 'I can't ever imagine being on another set.'" During the...

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Temple Hill Productions has signed a multiyear, first-look TV deal with Lionsgate to develop and produce scripted programming across various platforms. The two companies have previously worked together on the “Twilight” movies, “Power Rangers” and “Uncle Drew.” In addition to those films, Temple Hill has produced “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” “Love, Simon,” “Life Itself,” “The Hate U Give,” “First Man” and “The Fault in Our Stars,” among others. But this is a deal for TV shows. Love and Monsters, another would-be blockbuster that’s bypassing theaters for VOD, is arriving at your home quite soon, as evidenced by the release of the film’s first trailer.
If there’s one thing that the often-visited genre of post-apocalyptic sci-fi cinema needs, it’s a wholesome romance between two young star-crossed lovers. Someone at Paramount realized this, and, this past October, quickly went into development on the project in question, tapping headliners in Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist).
Michael Matthews directed the picture, having come off his feature debut, the 2017 South African western-style thriller, Five Fingers for Merseilles. He worked off a screenplay by Brian Duffield (Insurgent) and Matthew Robinson (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), based on a story by Duffield.
With that set, check out the Love and Monsters trailer just below.

Infinite, a sci-fi film from director Antoine Fuqua, made a major change with Mark Wahlberg as its new headliner, replacing Chris Evans. Indeed, while Avengers: Endgame was the expected, well, endgame of Evans’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America (maybe?), the actor happens to have several starring roles on his docket. Consequently, with regards to Infinite, Chris Evans—unlike Cap—didn’t want to “do this all day.”
Mark Wahlberg replaced Chris Evans as the headlining star of Infinite, as Variety reported back in June 2019. Evans, who had been attached to the project since that February, dropped out due to scheduling issues. Star-swap notwithstanding, the fast-tracked movie project will adapt author D. Eric Maikranz’s 2009 novel, The Reincarnationist Papers. Prolific producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are onboard via the former’s Paramount-based Di Bonaventura Pictures, joined in that capacity by John Zaozirny, along with executive producer Rafi Crohn.

Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist) will co-star in Monster Problems alongside Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner), as first reported by THR. O’Brien is set as the film's protagonist, with Henwick set to play the dream girl for whom he'll brave a global mutant apocalypse.
