This episode broke my heart. Patti's back story of abuse and rejection made me understand her more as far as the Guilty Remnant is concerned. My theory (& I'm sure it's not unique) is that the GR is a way for the hurt, angry and disappointed to lash out. It explains their mission to "make them remember" by punishing those who dare rediscover a little happiness in their lives. And the vanished might be those who were unwanted either for the moment, like Kevin's fling and Nora's family or on a permanent basis, possibly like Laurie's unborn child.

Little Patti represents abused children. She feels unworthy and "knows" that she is the cause of everything wrong. Neil's murder is Kevin's way of redeeming himself for what he's been charged to do, and this dovetails with his paternal instincts to protect little Patti. The agony that tears him apart is his unwillingness to commit infanticide while knowing that he must do it to head off the deadly damage she wreaks as an adult. What a conflict! My two cents.

It's hard to write a review about this unique episode. There is so much going on here. It's an unpredictable episode throughout and I'm still really confused. I didn't understand everything - but a few things will remain in my head & heart forever.

In my opinion, the main message of this episode is that letting go isn't easy and that you can loose people you love at any time. It's a scary message - but it tells the truth.

The acting is great, just as usual. Concerning the writing... perfect! On point. Though it's confusing from start to finish.

Not everyone will love this episode and I'm still not sure if I do. Nonetheless, "International Assassin" is a gem and that is hard to deny.

    Damn
I have never been so brain-efed from an episode in my life. Masterpiece... everything had a purpuse and not a single scene was unnecesary. 100/10
  • One of my all-time favorite TV episodes is "Funhouse", the season 2 finale of The Sopranos. In the same vein, "The Test Dream" from season 5 of the same. Two episodes where the lead goes through his worst fears in a surreal nightmare where he doesn't understand jack.

Going into this episode, I was happy I stuck with The Leftovers, but I wasn't calling it one of the greatest seasons or anything. And season 1 was, while good enough, hugely frustrating, and season 2 was a needed improvement anyway. It was damn good this far, but it seemed like there was a jolt waiting to happen, and the episode before this seemed to set it up.

Turns out, the jolt wasn't just a jolt, it was an electric chair. "International Assassin" is one of the finest hours of television, and I saw it on my TV screen which made the visually dazzling experience even more enriching. I was screaming my brains out at the end, a deeply satisfying catharsis that takes us through Kevin's mind and Patti's existence. It will make you feel for someone you didn't care much about earlier. It's a surreal piece of television that'll stay with you, if only for the last conversation between these two characters if nothing else. But there's a lot more than just this. There's a dark cloud hanging all over this episode which eventually brings rain (and one pretty cool action sequence). It's rich in character exposition, and a tad bit funny too (I'm looking at you, Wayne).

I called this season "damn good" earlier. Nope, now it's great. And having finished season 2, I am very pleased to have stuck this ride out. But I'm not reviewing the 2 episodes after this as of now (both extremely stellar episodes, mind you). It was this one that has me believing in miracles. Miracles like season 2 of The Leftovers which on any other network would have likely been dropped after season 1. Of course, Funhouse and The Test Dream are up there in my rankings, never to be upset. But, International Assassin is legendary, in its own right.

It's not wild in that it's too fast paced or anything, it is just such a crazy pivot for a show filled with twists to take. The plot is simple, Kevin wakes up in a hotel under a different name and is given a job to do: assassinate Patti Levin. Seems easy enough. But in typical Leftovers fashion, the show diverts away from everything we've known to this point by taking us into sometime afterlife that eerily imitates our world (or the world in the show, I guess). Yet again, the show defines why it is one of the best of the 2010's and hopefully will go on to have a wider audience in the future.
  • First I thought it's like a sopranos alike after death sequence. But than the plot unfolds and you get to know the things. You just have to admire this one.

This episode from The leftovers was the best episode from a TV show i have ever seen in my entire life. It was amazing, pure cinematography, raw talent, pure beauty. A lot of hidden symbols and hidden meanings to everything. A lot of emotion, beautiful shots that make you feel you're in another dimension (for example, the hotel has such tall ceilings...). And that bird... you kill the bird here, it will reborn in the normal world. And the little girl.... such an impressive acting. I was amazed about every minute of this fantastic work of art. Whoever reads this: just watch the show from the beginning and wait for this episode. Watch it and be amazed !
  • Man, my brain still hurts. This is one screwed up episode! But in an awesome freaking way! Damn, I'm so confused but I also have tears in my eyes. What was that? Can anyone explain it to me?

The acting is so good... Wow. And the director did a great job in delivering the main message and the purpose of this episode. Phew, philosophical stuff... This episode kinda scared me!

As you can see and read, I'm not really by myself... This episodes was too good to be true. It's a brain-shaker and full of interesting scenes. It keeps you guessing throughout.

Kevin is hot as always. We got some nice shots of him. Good that he's not only handsome, his acting skills are amazing!
  • This is the best episode of a show I have ever seen probably. Everything about the show has led to this, perfect buildup, perfect plot, perfect dialogue, amazing performances.

    Wow
Is it possible to rate something an 11? Because this deserves it. Best episode of one of the best shows ever made

This series is fantastic each episode its own little movie but this episode went overboard in its attempt to be different.

We never really get an explanation for anything that happens in the show but to spend an hour showing how Kevin finally managed to exorcise Patti from his mind and to do it in such a way was way over the top imo.

::: SPOILER AND EXPLANATIONS BELOW :::

This episode may seem very complicated to you, but it's not, really, it's not.

The composition of it, the transition from the excellent last episode prior to this, it is incredible. After he "died" previously, in this one he finds himself among the dead to kill the person that really bothers him.

Everything seems very confuse, where the Director and the Writers do in an impeccable way so that the viewer understands as if it were a real episode in a parallel world of The Leftovers.

    But it is not.

It was just kinda of a dream.

    And what a dream!

The transformation of the character, the decisions that he has to make to kill, the deceiving of his mind trying to abort his plans, the representation of a kid to make everything difficult. From the beginning of the episode he waking from the water and at the end he waking from the earth buried, you know...

Everything went so poeticly with a lovely photography, the acting was completely superb. Amazing!

I don't know why I am writing this review like 2 years after, but I think I have a must to do it, then I am doing so. Thank you
  • Learn what? Learn how to connect separate parts and make something vague turn into a masterpiece, this episode gentlemen is full of twists and mysteries but, you will understand what's going on cuz it is done flawlessly.

Hard to watch this by yourself. Started out a bit too crazy, but built to an amazing piece of art. From the loose bird, to picking your outfit, to Patti's past and her doofus husband being explained, just amazing! When Kevin finally pushed Patti in the well, then jumped in to be with her, I just have no words!
  • This episode was perfect from start to finish everything was perfectly executed and the show can only can get better from here so I have high hopes. Also the acting on this show is top tier.

Having watched "LOST" twice and enjoyed it immensely, I was intrigued to watch this episode just now. In many ways it reminded me of stuff in LOST that didn't seem to make much sense upon first viewing, especially the first time I watched LOST during its original once-a-week, 6 season release schedule. Then, when I bingewatched LOST with my teen son a few years back, it flowed much better and made more sense.

I feel that way about this episode of "The Leftovers," as I'm bingewatching it, for the first time, on MAX.

As to similarities Kevin reminds me in dress and looks of Jack (of LOST) in tonight's episode especially, and the well reminds me somewhat of the pivotal "water feature" of the last season of LOST. And tonight's unique setting may also bring to mind one, or more, such settinhs in LOST too.

Overall, I was happy to reexperience that "LOST feeling" again.

I thought other episodes were better, this one had interesting things and was good
  • Garvey heads to the gulag to get kills and head back to the game. He shows very good form by racking up a fair few kills without taking much damage at all.
  • I loved everything about this episode, It is one of the best episodes I've ever watched
