When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief, and his friends must confront terrifying forces in order to get him back.
Several characters in this show are named after famous actors or directors who were very successful in the 80s. Some examples: Hopper (Dennis Hopper), Dustin (Dustin Hoffman), Lucas (George Lucas), Steve (Steven Spielberg).
The teenage characters frequently use the phrase "chill" to mean hang around. In 1983, "chill" would have been used as a command to someone the speaker perceived to be overexcited about something. "Chill" didn't mean "hang out" until some point in the 1990's.
The Stranger Things opening titles and fonts mimic the film grain and look of 1980's television series opening credits.
