Follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposing sides of the Civil War - New England abolitionist Mary Phinney and Confederate supporter Emma Green.
Frank Stringfellow became an Episcopal priest after the Civil War and became the first chaplain at Woodberry Forest School. The school was founded by Frank's cousin Captain Robert Stringfellow Walker who served in the Confederate Army under Colonel John S. Mosby. His great grandson Frank Stringfellow is a professor of English at the University of Miami and is a graduate of Woodberry Forest.
