Interesting... Good Enough To Keep Watching
While its not the greatest show, the story was interesting and the cinematography and production design create an above average depiction of the 1800's that does make me want to see episode 2. But unfortunately the acting was not great in some places, some even over-acting, which is shocking considering the reputable actors involved. The story is about New York City in the late 1800's when a serial killer of children is lose in the city, a new profession known as alienist (or as we would call them, criminal profilers) seeks to help solve these murders. So the story hasn't been done before and is interesting enough to make me continue watching it.
I found the world they created (1800's NYC) to be good, not as good as Taboo or Peaky Blinders, but still very cool to see The Big Apple in such times. But I am disappointing that the acting was so over done. Daniel Bruhl is a great actor, and he did a fine job, but others like Dakota Fanning and Luke Evans went back and forth between not trying and over doing it. I'm not well versed in the true aspects of this partially true story so I can't speak on its historically accuracy, but the costume design, cinematography, and production was accurate enough to not turn me off immediately like other shows have. I also feel as if the show seeks to shock just for the sake of shocking the audience. But its not that big of a deal for me, but might be off-putting to some.
Over all it wasn't a bad start and I do want to see how the story progresses.
