What started off as a creative fantasy story unintentionally became hyperrealistic in Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s hit limited series A Murder at the End of the World.
The writing duo, who also served as co-creators, directors and EPs of the FX series, sat down at Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the inspiration behind the mystery.
Marling explained that the idea of the tech retreat came to them back in 2019, after several of their own friends had gone through similar experiences, describing how interesting she found it that “Everyone’s so willing to surrender to the largess of the billionaire, but what are the billionaire’s intentions?”
At the time, artificial intelligence was nowhere near where it is today, with several of their own friends attempting to discourage them from making it so central to the plot saying “AI’s so far away, do Mars, do this,...

The Liane Moriarty cinematic universe has now come to Peacock, but how does one adapt the author behind “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” work for the screen?
“Apples Never Fall” showrunner Melanie Marnich told IndieWire that maintaining beloved novelist Moriarty’s “page-turner energy” was key for adapting the twisted family drama starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.
“The pacing of those kinds of moments was to make the TV show have the same page-turner energy of the book,” Marnich said. “It was something I had to really be aware of. In the writer’s room, we worked really hard to craft the sort of constant turn of the story. It was so juicy. I’m a huge fan of Liane. I really, really worked to capture that same page turner energy in the show to keep things moving, but also never at the sacrifice of character development.”

Oa had himself one lousy day, didn't he?
First, it was his new girlfriend, Gemma, on FBI Season 6 Episode 4.
Then, it was a wild card of a Muslim FBI agent who served as a funhouse mirror for Omar.
Let's start with the latter first, since it was the more intriguing of the two storylines.
We can all agree that Gemma is a mistake that Oa hasn't recognized yet.
Hassan, played by English actor Elyes Gabel (Scorpion), had a chip on his shoulder. He felt that he had to do more just to be accepted by the Wasps in the FBI.
As Oa explained to Hassan, he saw himself as an FBI agent, not a Muslim FBI agent.
They're both likely fooling themselves.
Oa can't ever escape the fact that others will view him as Muslim. But there's always going to be a place for someone such as Hassan who can...

Oscar-nominated “Nyad” star Annette Bening on Peacock? Well, sometimes miracles do happen.
“Apples Never Fall” creator Melanie Marnich wanted to swing big when it came to pitching her take on the Liane Moriarty thriller novel adaptation. Despite never having showrun before, she was determined to cast A-lister Bening as Joy Delaney, a tennis pro coach matriarch who goes missing. While all signs point to her husband Stan (Sam Neill) as the most likely culprit, Joy’s case unlocks further Delaney family secrets swirling around their four children, played by Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and Essie Randles.
Bening, in fact, was at the center of Marnich’s initial pitch to Peacock.
“When [producer] David Heyman was looking for writers for the project I was like, ‘I’m going for it. I want this one,'” Marnich told IndieWire. “I think in my initial pitch to him, I was like, ‘I see Annette Bening as Joy.

In Hear Me Out, Primetimer staffers and contributors espouse their pet theories, hot takes, and even the occasional galaxy-brain idea.
It's all about the glasses. Those horn-rimmed glasses favored by Clive Owen's character in the FX series A Murder at the End of the World had me suspicious from the start. As a fan of Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's The Oa, I was primed to expect anything, on any plane of existence, out of their new series. The Oa traversed between dimensions, brought the dead back to life, opened portals with modern dance, and gave sight to the blind. I wasn't about to get caught off-guard with what was seemingly just a murder mystery.

Brit Marling spent the summer of her junior year at Georgetown University interning at Goldman Sachs, an investment firm that this very publication once called “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity.” She ended that summer with a cushy job offer — only to reject it and, along with her pal Mike Cahill, head to Cuba to film a documentary about boxers and ballerinas caught in the middle of the U.S.-Cuba imbroglio. Marling drank from the capitalist cup, and it left a very bitter taste in her mouth.

Fusion Entertainment has signed Bria Vinaite, an actress who got her breakout role as a woman living on the economic fringes in Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project.”
The Lithuania-born actress was discovered by filmmaker Baker when she was working in the fashion industry and cast in the lead part of a struggling single mother raising her daughter in a motel. Her performance earned Vinaite multiple award nominations from critics groups including Chicago Film Critics Association and San Diego Film Critics Association.
Since “The Florida Project” debuted in 2017, Vinaite has gone on to act in TV series including “The Oa” and films such as “Balance Not Symmetry” and “Lost in Transmissions.” Next year, she will star in “Pandemonium,” the latest feature from Icelandic filmmaker Anton Sigurdsson. A Murder at the End of the World creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij are a resilient duo. Instead of letting disappointment linger, the longtime creative partners quickly rebounded after the cancellation of their beloved genre-bender The Oa and channeled its many profound takeaways into their next story. The Netflix series struck a deep chord in viewers around the world, and seeing firsthand the community and energy that had formed around their work, Marling and Batmanglij further trusted their storytelling instincts until a new name rose to the top of their collective mind: Darby Hart.
Their FX on Hulu limited series chronicles past-and-present Darby (Emma Corrin), who’s an amateur sleuth turned true-crime author. She combines the hacking and investigative skills of Mr. Robot’s Elliot Alderson and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Lisbeth Salander, with the death-adjacent upbringing of Six Feet Under‘s Claire Fisher. If you have not checked out the new FX series A Murder At The End Of The World yet, I highly encourage you to do so. Created by the team that brought the short-lived, fan-favorite Netflix series The Oa, A Murder At The End Of The World is a mystery series that serves as a modernized whodunit in the vein of Agatha Christie. Following an isolated group at a remote location where a murder occurs, the series is a fascinating dual narrative featuring a stellar ensemble cast by Emma Corrin.

A24 is keeping in business with Halina Reijn.
Following the indie box office success of the Dutch actress-turned-feature-filmmaker’s 2022 word-of-mouth hit “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” A24 has another upcoming project with Reijn. “Babygirl,” the studio announced on November 21, will star Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson in an erotic thriller about a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern. Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde (breakout star of A24’s “Talk to Me”), and Jean Reno also join the cast, IndieWire has confirmed. “Babygirl” will mark Reijn’s second feature film, which she wrote as well.
David Hinojosa of 2Am will produce alongside Reijn of Man Up Film and A24, who is financing the project. Julia Oh, Zach Nutman, and Christine D’Souza Gelb of 2Am will serve as executive producers on “Babygirl.”

If you’re of a certain age (or if you’ve ever spent too much time on Wikipedia), you likely know of the horrors that are about to befall the British royal family on Netflix’s “The Crown.” The sixth and final season of the Emmy-winning drama from Peter Morgan is back this week and covers the events of 1997 through 2005. The time-hopping first four episodes, which are streaming now on Netflix (the final six episodes will stream in December), depict the lead-up to Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) tragic death in a car crash in Paris and the subsequent reaction of her family, Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) and the monarchy. Debicki, who was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in Season 5, gives yet another award-worthy turn as the show follows Diana in the months leading up to that fateful day, making “The Crown” the awards contender to watch this weekend.

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published September 2023, and has since been updated.]
There was a time not too long ago when whodunnits seemed to be a dusty relic of cinema’s past. Mysteries about a cast of colorful characters at the center of a murder case, and the intrepid detective investigating them, were far and few between in movie theaters for what felt like decades, and the rare films to feature those plots seldom attracted much attention. But nowadays, the genre is back, baby.
In 2017, Kenneth Branagh directed and starred as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot in “Murder on the Orient Express,” based on one of mystery writer Agatha Christie’s most famous novels. It was the first high-profile Christie adaptation to hit theaters in ages, after 1988’s “Appointment with Death.” The movie was highly successful, and Branagh has returned to that Poirot mustache with “Death on the Nile” and “A Haunting in Venice,” the latter of which opened in theaters this month.

Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij haven’t let go of “The Oa,” the cult hit Netflix series they created that was canceled prematurely after two seasons.
The thriller series starred Marling as Prairie Johnson, a woman who resurfaces after seven years claiming to have been lost in another dimension and now boasting unique abilities. Though she and Batmanglij had planned for a five-season arc for the international sensation, Netflix chose to end the series on a cliffhanger in 2019 following the release of Season 2.
Almost five years later, Marling says she and Batmanglij have not closed the door on revisiting the story when the time is right.
“I guess it’s a question of whether the climate and circumstances in the world reach a place where it can bloom, but of course we think about that story all the time,” Marling told TheWrap. “It was its own world, and of course...

Brit Marling is used to juggling multiple roles on the set of her projects, but “A Murder at the End of the World” marked the first time she sat on the director’s chair.
The actress, writer and now director helmed three out of the seven episodes in the FX limited series, which she also cocreated with her longtime filmmaking collaborator Zal Batmanglij. Readying to share an excerpt from her first book, an author stands at the podium and warns the room she’s going to start with the ending. “I was told you’re not meant to do that at these readings,” she says, “but I’m going to do it anyway.” Ultimately, Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) omits a few key details of her favored passage — she’s there to sell books, after all, and has to hook an audience who initially showed up to hear from another writer — but the choice speaks volumes about who she is and what her true crime story is designed to do. It’s not about whoever’s waiting at the end of the investigation; it’s not about studying a killer, learning from his twisted psyche, or even catching him. Instead, Darby’s account invites readers to reconsider what’s right in front of them,...

In the opening scene of the new FX miniseries A Murder at the End of the World, a woman named Darby stands in front of a small bookstore crowd to do a reading from her true crime book The Silver Doe. She is very young, speaks haltingly, and seems determined to vanish inside her voluminous red coat and the hoodie she’s wearing beneath it. As she fumbles through her introductory remarks, audience members begin to stand up and leave, convinced that this odd person has nothing of interest to say.

Toward the end of “A Murder at the End of the World,” Ziba (Pegah Ferydoni), one of the guests staying at a billionaire’s Icelandic bunker, sums up the horror of the A.I. technology that the tech giant whose retreat they’re attending has created. Ray, the name given to the humanized smart computer overseeing every guest’s whim, is “an us, without feeling.” The line is not simply meant to highlight the danger of the soullessness of artificial intelligence— how, as many critics of theChat Gpt era would say, advanced technology can never replicate our ineffable humanity, no matter how impressively it spits things out of its data churner.
The real terror is the “us” part. If A.I. takes our data and reflects ourselves back to us, it is a mirror of an often disfigured society.

The TV showrunners redefined sci-fi with their acclaimed Netflix series, until its sudden cancellation left them reeling. Now they’ve regrouped to take on the whodunnit
Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij arrive at the Chelsea Hotel in New York in a frenzy. “We’re flying by the seat of our pants,” Marling announces, underscored by the vibrating of Batmanglij’s phone; the 148-day writers’ strike ended just hours ago and now, suddenly, the duo can work once more. Inboxes are being inundated.
They are also experiencing a sense of deliverance, they say, now that they can finally talk about their new show, A Murder at the End of the World. They have been working on it for nearly half a decade, ever since the cancellation of their hit series The Oa in 2019. “I feel like we’ve been on a tanker ship and we’re finally seeing land,” says Batmanglij.
