Lyricist Varun Grover, who is known for his work on ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Masaan’, ‘Sacred Games’ and others, doesn’t believe in the philosophy of quality art being born from a broken heart.
Varun appeared on ‘Chalchitra Talks’ podcast and spoke about the creation of art and how the basic requirement to create any kind of art is to stay curious.
When asked if he thinks that good art is an output of pain and a broken heart, the lyricist denied it vehemently. He said: “Nahi main nahi maanta ye (I don’t believe in this). This is absolutely wrong. Music or art in general is created when you’re curious. To be curious, it’s not necessary for an artiste to go through pain.”
He further mentioned: “Broken heart, does it help? Or is it an aura created around artists with a broken heart just like how there has...

‘All India Rank’ aka ‘Air’ as used in the academic parlance, has released at a time when the immediate reference that comes to my mind, is a comparison with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ’12th Fail’ (released on 27 October 2023) but that too only for the genre of the narrative – lower middle class setting and competitive exams! Otherwise, both the films are poles apart in terms of the story telling, acting and everything else.
‘All India Rank’ tries to address issues close to the Indian middle-class milieu, but it gets lost through its multiple storylines that try to prove the point. Ultimately the audience remain clueless deriving the purpose after spending 94 minutes seeing things that neither entertain nor communicate. The last sentence of the film (about control in life) is what the director needs to think about very seriously.

A new research report by the School of Media and Cultural Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Tiss), Mumbai, reveals that on- and off-screen women and queer representation in box-office hits remains largely stereotypical.
This statement in itself says a lot. It says, women and queer representation remains stereotypical in box-office Hits. Going by the summary of the research it can be concluded, as it does not matter how female actors are cast, it is the male actor who carries a film and it becomes a hit!
The research is exhaustively titled ‘Lights, Camera, and Time for Action: Recasting a Gender Equality Compliant Bollywood’. Such a clichéd title!
The research was carried out by Tiss and funded by the US Consulate General in Mumbai. The report was released by the brand new celebrity, Guneet Monga Kapoor, thanks to her Oscar-winning feature, ‘Elephant Whisperers’, Vidya Balan and Nandita Das,...

New Delhi, July 23 (Ians) Two rather unproductive, illogical and mostly futile exercises were reported recently: Exhibitors in Chennai met this past week and drafted some demands which actually set terms on film producers! The other was a Tiss report on Equitable Gender Representation in Hindi Cinema.
Tn Exhibitors’ Desperate Demands
Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors’ Association (Tnfea) has put forward some demands on filmmakers that don’t look businesslike. The demands and the tone sound dictatorial. Not to mention confusing. Though impractical, such matters require the parties concerned to sit across the table and discuss.
The exhibitors want a film to be released on Ott only after eight weeks, or 56 days, following its theatrical release. Presently, the producers follow a four-week embargo.
This demand just amounts to asserting the exhibitors’ status and is not necessary. Because, neither a producer, nor the Ott platform will release a film till it is collecting revenue at the box office.

Canadian-Indian-American actor Sunny Leone is making her Cannes debut with Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy.”
Presumed dead for years, Kennedy (Rahul Bhat) is an insomniac former cop who continues to work for a corrupt system while seeking redemption. Leone plays a pivotal character named Charlie.
“She’s a little bit of a complex character and she hides behind some of her motions. And one of the things she hides behind the most is this laugh. And I believe she’s a woman who’s caught in two different worlds – one is the one that she wants to live in and one is the one she has been deliberately caught up in. I really enjoyed playing this character. And I think she is someone who’s trying her very best to be as strong as possible at every moment of the day,” Leone told Variety.

The film, which also stars Sunny Leone, will play in the Midnight Screenings strand of the festival. Several films directed by Kashyap have played at Cannes, including “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). In addition, several films produced by him have made it to the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).
The plot of “Kennedy” is being kept under wraps at the moment. “Kennedy is a ghost in the system looking for redemption,” is how Kashyap describes the film to Variety.
The filmmaker says that the character of Kennedy has been an obsession with him for years and was born when fellow Indian filmmaker Sudhir Mishra hired him to write a cop story set in the 1980s. That film never got made but the character stayed with Kashyap.

As the story goes, Chakbast, a lawyer by profession, was once sent a hemstich, or half line of verse, by a ‘khafifa’ (small cause) court official to complete. This line was "Rag-e-gul se bulbul ke par bandhte hai" and Chakbast responded, wittily but rather cruelly too, to make it "Khafifa adalat mein ullu ke patthe/Rag-e-gul se bulbul ke par bandhte hai."
As per literary scholar Saraswati Saran ‘Kaif’, this couplet spread widely across the country in the 1920s and 1930s, though few knew who its author was, with users freely changing the first line to "Suna hai ki Meerut mein ullu ke patthe.." or "Aligarh mein ullu ke patthe.." or as needed for the put downs of specific cities or regions.
That, however, is far from the high point of the poetry of Chakbast, who, in his comparatively short life (1882-1926), brought together – and reflected – in his poetry four...

InterviewVarun Grover, scriptwriter, standup comedian and filmmaker, was at the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram with his short film ‘Kiss’.CrisIt is hard to imagine Varun Grover the way he describes himself. He says that his body goes tense when he sees a traffic cop on the road looking at him and he becomes anxious wondering if he did something wrong. This is the man who goes on stage and cracks a joke on just about anything, unafraid and witty. And in Hindi, the language of authority. But anxiety is what comes to many like him, taking a stand, even through an act of comedy, or a film, in a state that oppresses voices of dissent, he says. And then in true style, he goes back to his old joke – “They will kill Kunal Kamra (popular standup comedian) before they kill me. The day he is killed,...

The makers of cinematic gems like ‘Masaan’ and ‘Newton’ are out with another important work of storytelling, Siya. Produced by Drishyam Films, the film takes audiences through a tale of a small-town girl who despite all hurdles, decides to take down oppressive patriarchy and fight for justice.
Siya marks producer Manish Mundra’s directorial debut and the hard-hitting film starring Pooja Pandey and Vineet Kumar Singh is based out one of the northern states in India, much like most of Drishyam’s films, it speaks to a global audience.
While the teaser of Siya had created much intrigue with audiences, the trailer is gripping from start to finish as we can’t help but relate and empathize with the protagonist’s plight. Raw and as real as it gets, Siya is an uncompromising look at the harsh reality women around the world continue to face.

The teaser of the upcoming film ‘Siya’ was unveiled on Wednesday. The film, which marks the directorial debut of producer Manish Mundra, is a human story from the Indian heartland that aims to spark conversation and debate on how society treats its women and the oppressive social systems.
The teaser gives the audiences a sense of the brutality and despair countless victims of violence and rape endure. It also throws light on the shocking indifference with which the subject of rape continues to be treated in the country. It also reminds the viewer of the Hathras 2020 gangrape and murder case where a Dalit woman was raped by upper caste men in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.

Newen, the production-distribution unit of TF1, France’s biggest broadcast network, has acquired a minority stake in Spain’s Kubik Films, the ambitious production label owned and operated by filmmaking brothers Alberto and Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo. It will also serve as the exclusive distribution partner for their future feature film and TV productions, part fueled by third-party content pick-ups.
“The arrival of Alberto and Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo in the Newen family brings a new burst of creativity,” said Newen international director Philippe Levasseur. “They are multifaceted talents: Writers, directors and producers; and their team spirit matches exactly how we think of Newen.”
Newen has been scouting project-rich companies from around Europe with which to work and was quickly attracted to the promising pipeline at Kubik, which includes several films and series with more than one adaptation of well-established Spanish IPs from other mediums.

Ajeeb Dastaans(Netflix)
Starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Konkona Sen Sharma, Nusrat Bharucha,Abhishek Bannerjee, Inayat Verma, Shefali Shah, Pavan Kaul
Directed by Shashank Khaitan, Raj Mehta, Neeraj Ghaywan, and Kayoze Irani
This is a diverse provocative(sometimes too consciously so) bouquet of stories of four women in search of an emotional and physical fulfillment that eludes them because…well, they have obligations. Don’t we all!
Uneven in quality, some of the plotting conceits verge on the absurd. To begin with, let’s take the first story Majnu directed by Shashank Khaitan. It is a passionless passion-tale about a marriage of convenience between a moneyed dangerous criminal Babloo(Jaideep Ahlawat) and Lipashi(Fatima Sana Sheikh). The film opens with one of Babloo’s henchman making a preposterous pass at his Bhabhaiji, and never recovers its equilibrium.
Once the self-consciously handsome Raj(Armaan Ralhan) enters the couple’s loveless...

Entertainment While ‘Geeli Pucchi’ and ‘Ankahi’ make an impact, ‘Khilauna’ and ‘Majnu’ end up being shockingly bad.Saraswati DatarScreenshotAjeeb Daastaans, an anthology of four short films, is a strange combination of two really good films and two that make films my classmates made in college seem great. Now streaming on Netflix, Ajeeb Daastaans is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment. Directors Shashank Khaitaan, Raj Mehta, Neeraj Ghaywan and Kayoze Irani are at the helm of four stories Majnu, Khilauna, Geeli Pucchi and Ankahi. The premise or rather promise is that each story brings a shocking, horrifying and/or heartbreaking twist in the tale we never saw coming. Unfortunately, Shashank Khaitaan and Raj Mehta tell tales that seem so self-conscious in their desire to shock that they end up being quite shockingly bad. Ajeeb Daastans is rescued by its brilliant third film, Geeli Pucchi directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, who elicits...
