There was some controversy invoking "bad" animation, something Akira Toriyama agreed with. He sent out a manuscript to Toei, who is the only party that can change it.
Despite that TOEI has improved the animation, some fans had complained about the lack of blood in the series. The Manga adaptation has all the blood and gore that the original TV show and Manga had, especially in the Future Trunks Arc.
Goku never met Android 17. However for a rare reason he does know Goku. In the chapter 31 of the Dragon Ball Super manga, the android explains that he was still alive somehow after Cell absorbed him. He could see and hear everything from within the villain, so 17 was present for all of Goku's battles against Cell. Regardless of that though, all the Androids in dbz were created to want nothing more than to kill Goku. So they knew all about all of his fights, even back into Dragon Ball.
This is the first "Dragon Ball" series in eighteen years, and is the official continuation of Dragon Ball Z (1989), leaving Dragon Ball GT (1996) as an alternate future.
The recap sequence utilizes an instrumental version of "Cha-La Head Cha-La", the Dragon Ball Z (1989) theme song.
