Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Benjamin Wallfisch is recognized as one of the leading film composers of his generation, with a career spanning over a decade and 60 feature films. He has composed music for such legendary film makers as Steven Spielberg, Rupert Wyatt, Gore Verbinksi and Lars von Trier, and has worked on scores that have been recognized with awards and nominations at the Academy Awards, BAFTAs and World Soundtrack Awards.
Wallfisch fit us into his extremely busy schedule and we were happy to have any time with this dynamic composer. We asked him about Verbinski’s thriller A Cure For Wellness and the sensational Hidden Figures — both now on Blu-ray/VOD — as well as insight into how he works.
The Film Stage: I first heard your name when your music was featured on a friend’s film score radio show: Tim Burden’s Movie Magic. In short, “Conquest 1453” just blew me away.

For years, Ice-t has helped uphold the law as Odafin Tutuola, but in the new horror film Bloodrunners, the renowned actor and musician plays jazz club owner—and vampire—Chesterfield, who is looking to bootleg a little booze and a whole lot of blood during the Prohibition era. With Bloodrunners out now on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Ice-t about sinking his teeth into the juicy role, his band Body Count's upcoming album Bloodlust, and much more.
Congratulations on the film, Ice-t. I haven't had this much with a vampire movie in a while, and it was so unique, too, with the Prohibition setting, so hats off you and the entire team for putting this together.
Ice-t: Me and Mike Harvey work on Law & Order [Special Victims Unit] together, and he's the makeup and special effects guy from this film. So he was...

Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are the best friends you wish you had, and naturally, the two witty and talented actress are very close in real life. The “Hunger Games” star considers Stone a “really good friend” ever since mutual co-star Woody Harrelson gave Emma her number and texted every day for a year after that.
“She texted me that she got my number from Woody,” Lawrence told Vanity Fair. “I replied, F**k off!’ And we’ve been really good friends ever since. I feel like it was our version of ‘The Notebook’ — 365 texts.”
While it might be difficult to be good friends with someone who has the same job as you – and ultimately could go after the same roles – they understand that each have something different to offer. Lawrence recently attended a “La La Land” screening and praised Stone for her Oscar buzzworthy performance.

One of the breakout directors of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival thanks to “The Skeleton Twins,” Craig Johnson finally returns to theaters next year with his third and most star-studded feature, “Wilson.” Adapted by Daniel Clowes from his graphic novel of the same name, the comedy-drama stars Woody Harrelson as a neurotic loner and Laura Dern as his ex-wife, and if we learned anything from Johnson’s last feature, it’s that he knows how to wring out all the laughs and heartbreak from familial relationships.

The DC Comics movie universe truly needs a superhero to save it right now. After the one-two critical beating of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Suicide Squad,” plus recent news that Rick Famuyiwa is leaving “The Flash” over creative differences with the studio, Warner Brothers is pretty much on their last breath in the eyes of many. The future is already set with movies like “Justice League” already in pre-production, but that doesn’t mean people are actually excited about it. Enter “Wonder Women,” the Amazonian warrior princess who is Warner Bros’ last hope.

Danny Boyle’s 1996 cult classic “Trainspotting” is an interesting juxtaposition. It’s bleak subject matter and disorienting aesthetic doesn’t necessarily make you want to watch it endlessly, yet it’s characters are so memorable and, dare we say, lovable in the most messed up way that you can’t help but want to spend more time with them. That’s part of what makes “Trainspotting 2” one of the more unique sequels hitting theaters next year. Titled “T2,” the film is a massive reunion that finds Boyle, screenwriter John Hodge and stars Ewan McGregor Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle all back together again.

It’s no secret that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is Team Hillary Clinton. In a new video for NextGen Climate, the Emmy Award winner is reminding millennials to vote not only for the Democratic nominee but also to elect the right people to the U.S. Senate.

“Movie magic” is a perhaps over-used term bandied about for all types of filmmaking techniques, but there’s some genuinely special about a specific type of edit: the match cut. In the span of a split second, an editor can make a leap across space and time, and when done seamlessly, its effect is like few others in cinema. In a new video homage from Celia Gómez, she walks through a mix of some of the most memorable and perhaps lesser-known examples.
There’s, of course, the most iconic in films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Graduate, Psycho, and Un Chien Andalou. She also brings in a few examples from Park Chan-wook‘s Stoker, as well as three of Steven Spielberg‘s films, and more to show the wide-ranging uses (although we would have loved the inclusion of a few from Tarsem‘s The Fall). Fox has just released a featurette that helps make the case that X-men: Apocalypse is going to be the biggest X-men movie ever. I found it interesting, as a non-comic book fan, since I know very little about Apocalypse. I've never read any X-Men comic books, or watched any of the cartoons, so- to me- the marketing so far hasn't done enough to define what makes him special. The video below did just that:
I know its kind of in vogue these days to crap on this movie, or to act like its the runt of the litter- considering Deadpool, Batman V Superman, and the upcoming Captain America: Civil War have all dominated 2016 so far. It's been six years since mega-hit "Alice in Wonderland" first hit the big screen, and now Disney is treating us to a sequel with "Alice Through the Looking Glass." While the follow-up may not be directed by Tim Burton, rest assured that "Looking Glass" still looks very Burton-esque.

Movie magic is a very real thing. For decades, filmmakers have turned to incredibly low-tech concepts in order to create magnificent worlds on the silver screen. One franchise that knows this idea better than most is the world of Star Wars. Despite all of Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ immense production values and its sky-high budget, some of it’s coolest and most intense effects were achieved by something as simple as a purring cat. Talking to Fandango, Star Wars Sound Editor Matthew Wood spoke out about Kylo Ren’s interrogation of Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, revealing how the crew used a domestic cat named Pork Chop to achieve the right sound effect for the scene. He said: We were left with a scene that didn't have any John Williams music -- and if you look at the scene, without sound it's ...

Movie magic is really something: it can take the most basic premise, or the shabbiest bit of scenery, and transform it into something breathtaking and iconic right before our very eyes. There’s no denying that that is what movies do well.
What it doesn’t do quite so well is sex. More specifically, making sex look even halfway normal and not inspiring sex positions that are hellbent on wrecking genitals when recreated in the real world.
Too many sex scenes feature a concoction of illogically conceived, impossible to imitate maneuvers that actors have to sell as “enjoyable.” And one can’t help but wonder if the filmmaker has a personal vendetta against all moviegoers’ junk. Are they trying to break someone’s penis? The many hours of evidence certainly suggests so.
