One of the funniest Irish movies in recent years, The Young Offenders hit the big screen last year, with the tale of two Cork inner-city teenagers embarking on a road trip to recover a lost bale of cocaine delighting audiences the world over, becoming the fast Irish film to reach the €1 million mark at the Irish box office and even receiving Special Mention for Best Comedy Debut at the 2016 Fantastic Fest in Austin Texas. Now, Peter Foott’s debut feature is getting the small screen treatment, with BBC Three and BBC Comedy, in association with Rte, commissioning a six part series based on the continuing adventures of loveable rogues Connor MacSweeny (Alex Murphy) and Jock O’Keefe (Chris Walley). Foott will be onboard as writer, director, and executive producer, with Murphy and Walley reprising their roles. Hilary Rose will also as Connor’s mother, Mairead. With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

A Date For Mad Mary
Dir Darren Thornton
This big-hearted Irish romcom, which shared the top prize at Galway this summer, has all the smarts to hit with younger audiences should it get the chance. Just released from prison, surly, boozy Mary pines for her bridezilla Bff who has moved on. Now she needs a date for the wedding and rarely has someone looked for love with less interest. Thornton directs a scuzzily radiant Seana Kerslake as the miserably mad Mary, wildly unpredictable and widely misunderstood, in a film that feels like the love child of Weekend and Once.

The runaway smash hit Irish comedy The Young Offenders passed the €1million mark at the Irish Box Office on October 20th. To mark the occasion, the filmmakers have released a special celebratory clip: In a year that has been praised for quality Irish film, The Young Offenders has become the fastest Irish film to break the €1million mark at the Irish Box Office this year, and next week it will be the highest grossing Irish-made film of the year at the domestic box office, overtaking Sing Street. It now joins the ranks of other classics such as The Guard, Calvary, and Man About Dog as one of the few Irish comedy films to reach this Irish Box Office milestone. It has also taken more at the Irish Box Office than some of this year’s biggest international comedies such as Absolutely Fabulous and Bad Neighbours 2, as well as the Hollywood blockbusters Independence Day.

Irish cinema is having a bit of a moment. On the one hand, you have the McDonagh brothers, Martin and John Michael, who’ve had big hits at home and abroad with their often violent dark comedies “In Bruges,” “The Guard” and “Calvary.” On another, you have John Carney, whose warm musical comedies “Once” and “Sing Street” have won hearts all over the shop.

“There are two things you need for a good adventure: a treasure map, and someone dumb enough to go with you.” If you were to read that, you might just be inclined to follow the person who said it. If not, you might just miss out on one hell of a wild ride.
The Young Offenders, the debut feature from Peter Foott, is a story about never-do-wells just trying to get ahead despite being completely out of options. Essentially, this can be seen as a comical call to action for those with zero opportunities. As someone once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” And these two hooligans — or rather, young offenders — are put down every single day. They’re tired of it, they want something better, and who can blame them?

Rowdy, raucous, and rude, The Young Offenders is a blast of adolescence without angst, a juvenile movie that is surprisingly cheerful, even as its young heroes straddle the thin line between criminality and, well, not being a straight-up criminal. Conor (Alex Murphy) and Jock (Chris Walley) are best friends in the largely comic tale, which is set in 2007. They live in Cork, a good-sized city along the coast of Ireland, where the 15-year-old schoolmates are kindred souls. Both are being raised by single parents, though neither is happy about it. Conor's mother (Hilary Rose) is gainfully employed selling fish at the well-known English Market and provides as best she can for him, but Conor views her protectiveness as suffocating. Jock's father is an angry...

Exclusive: Growing Dublin-based distributor is inking deals for key local fare as well as sub-licensing for London-based distributors.
Irish distributor Wildcard Distribution has secured a wide and varied slate of forthcoming releases - including new projects from some of Ireland’s strongest emerging filmmakers.
Two crime-themed films, The Young Offenders and Cardboard Gangsters, which have completed production, will have their world premieres at the Galway Film Fleadh in July.
The Young Offenders is inspired by the bizarre case of Ireland’s biggest-ever drug seizure in 2007. The haul, off the coast of West Cork, took place after a boat capsized, leaving bales of cocaine floating in the water.
It fired the imagination of first-time feature director Peter Foott, whose film focuses on two Cork city teenagers who embark on a 160km road trip to steal some of the bales. The film will be released in Ireland this autumn.
