After escaping an attack by what he claims was a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible.
In the novel, Jonas became a paleo-biologist after his final diving venture (where he allegedly saw a giant white shark's head), which is how he's able to immediately identify the giant shark as a megalodon. In the film, he never actually sees the megalodon in the beginning, and became an alcoholic afterwards, but is able to immediately identify the megalodon on first sight nonetheless.

D'Angelo: So far nothing new, my friend. It just keeps getting worse.
It is implied the mother humpback of the calf makes the "singing" vocalization as the humans watch her with her calf. While female humpbacks do vocalize some sounds, only the males "sing."
The movie ends with the word "Fin", a reference to the title shark in addition to being French for "end."
