World Boxing Council middleweight champ Kali Reis recently shared the screen with Jodie Foster in the HBO series True Detective: Night Country, and now Deadline reports that she is following up the success of that season of television by signing on to join previously announced cast members Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), and Annabelle Wallis (Malignant) in the sci-fi thriller Mercy.
Mercy reunites Pratt with his Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov to tell a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.” The screenplay was written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin).
Coming our way from Amazon MGM Studios, the film is expected to go into production this spring and is already scheduled to receive a worldwide theatrical release on August 15, 2025.

Making art is a personal gamble. To create something worthwhile you often have to dig deep and mine whatever is going on inside yourself in hopes of producing an artistic product which has authenticity. Remi R.M. Moses’ short Saving Art, a hospital-set drama that follows a struggling father who is battling with the guilt he feels offering optimistic lies to his ailing son, is exactly that kind of project, a film born from Moses’ own personal experience in the wake of his five year old niece’s diagnosis with leukaemia. It’s an incredibly brave film to make but it delivers on that artistic gamble, telling a story that is emotionally-challenging but incredibly rewarding and cathartic. Dn was delighted to first catch the short at the London Film School’s graduate showcase earlier this year and invited Moses to join us for a conversation amidst the film’s festival...

When it comes to keeping the momentum for storytelling, writers from hit shows such as True Detective: Night Country, Irish hit dramedy Faithless and British superhero comedy Extraordinary all have different approaches for making returnable television series.
Speaking at the inaugural screenwriting festival Storyhouse in Dublin, Irish writer-actor and presenter Baz Ashmawy spoke about his debut writing project Faithless, a six-part series for Virgin Media, which follows an Irish-Egyptian dad who is presented with the life-changing responsibility of raising his three young daughters alone.
“I was more clear on the tone of it because I saw a gap in Irish shows that were either sitcoms pre watershed or crime dramas,” said Ashmawy to a packed theatre at Dublin’s Light House cinema. “I saw there was a hole for dramedy – to make someone laugh one minute and then upset them in the next scene. I’ve always found that playing...

Issa López can't stop winning.
Season 4 of the hit HBO series "True Detective" was a massive risk, with show creator Nic Pizzolatto stepping back after three seasons to collect executive producer checks and whine on Instagram, while López took the series into a completely different direction with "Night Country" and navigated her predecessor's pettiness with the utmost grace. The risk paid off, big time, as "Night Country" became the most-watched season of the series yet, as well as the highest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes. So it's no surprise that HBO has wisely decided to renew the acclaimed drama for a fifth installment, with López returning for a new season under a multiyear overall deal with the company. Meaning, she will not only create season 5 of "True Detective," but she will also provide additional projects exclusive to HBO and the Max streaming platform. Just yesterday, we heard that Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country) “might” come back to do another season of the show. Now it’s a sure thing. Variety has broken the news that HBO has ordered True Detective season 5, and López, who has just secured new overall deal with the network, will be back at the helm.
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the show, but once the third season wrapped up, his HBO deal expired and he signed a new (short-lived) deal with FX. HBO retained the ownership rights to True Detective, and with Pizzolatto gone they were interested in bringing in someone who had “a fresh voice with a different...

The smash hit success of “True Detective: Night Country,” the fourth season of the HBO anthology series, is paving the way for “True Detective” Season 5, we’ve learned today.
Variety reports that “Night Country” creator Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) will stay on board to lead the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The website notes in today’s report, “At this time, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis are not attached to the fifth installment, as the show has changed its lead actors with each new season.”
“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López said. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.

In recent years, classic Mexican horror has gained a deeper appreciation and curiosity from international horror audiences wanting to experience the unique terror of Mexican horror.
Mexico Macabre: Four Sinister Tales from the Alameda Films Fault 1959-1963, the box set released by Indicator, highlights four iconic films from the golden age of Mexican horror cinema, Black Pit of Dr. M, The Witch’s Mirror, The Brainiac, and The Curse of the Crying Woman, from the influential Mexican production company Alameda Films. These films broke boundaries and pioneered new artistic styles in Mexican cinema, blending the influence of gothic imagery from American and European cinema with Mexican culture and history. The artistic influences of these films can be seen deeply embedded in the horror films and filmmakers of Mexico from the gothic style of Guillermo del Toro to the modern trailblazing Mexican horror films Tigers are Not Afraid and Huesera: The Bone Woman.

“Can’t blame me.” Those are the words of Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, in response to a post on social media criticizing season four of the HBO anthology, the first cycle in which he has had no direct involvement. That tweet, as well as reposts of messages by the viewers critical of the new season, raises the question of what the show’s original creator has been up to since he left the series.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he wasn’t creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show – and he repeatedly let it be known that he wasn’t a fan of how the show was going in his absence. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season, and despite Pizzolatto’s objections, this season was able to draw in enough viewers that it became the most-watched season of the show, with Deadline reporting that it averaged 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, with 3.2 million checking out the season finale on the day of its release. So it’s no surprise to hear that López might be coming back for more True Detective.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from the season 4 finale of True Detective: Night Country.
HBO’s crime anthology wrapped its fourth season Sunday with detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) solving the murder of the eight men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station who vanished without a trace.
Here, creator/showrunner Issa López — who came to the anthology after the writing and directing the award-winning Mexican film Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven) — talks about how she first broke the story about the men in the research station, who represented the drama’s moral center, and what it was like to work with Foster and Reis.
Deadline So did Navarro become a ghost in the finale after she walked out on the ice?

Well, we're five episodes into "True Detective: Night Country" and the mystery just keeps getting more... mysterious. What caused a group of research scientists to perish in apparent anguish on the Alaskan tundra? How is that linked to the murder of Annie Kowtok, an Indigenous woman whose body was found dumped in the small town of Ennis some years before the discovery of the scientist's bodies? And how does the spiral from season 1 fit into all of this?
At this point, there's all sorts of speculation among fans, including talk of pollution causing the inhabitants of Ennis, Alaska to lose their minds, and even a potential Lovecraftian creature that would finally fulfill the cosmic horror promises of season 1. Considering new showrunner Issa López's penchant for weaving the paranormal with gritty realism, as evidenced in her 2017 feature "Tigers Are Not Afraid," it wouldn't be completely out of the...

“True Detective: Night Country” is the first season of the HBO anthology series not created by Nic Pizzolatto, who up until now had a writing credit on every episode across the show’s first three seasons. The show’s fourth season, “Night Country,” hails from Issa López, whose 2017 horror movie “Tigers Are Not Afraid” served as an industry breakthrough for the writer-director. López directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the new season.
While Pizzolatto is still an executive producer on the show, he has made it quite clear on social media amid “Night Country’s” run that he is not involved in any capacity with the fourth season of the show. He allegedly commented in since-deleted social media posts that some Season 4 plot points that connect to the show’s first season are “so stupid” and told one fan, “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else.

Although it might seem like male directors stand at the forefront of Mexican cinema right now — look at recent Oscar winners such as Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, and Alejandro González Iñárritu — it’s a new wave of female filmmakers who are actually the ones to watch.
Tatiana Huezo (“The Echo”), Fernanda Valadez (“Identifying Features”), and Issa López all shine bright, yet Lila Avilés (“The Chambermaid”) might be the first to come close to Oscar success of her own with “Tótem,” which was shortlisted at this year’s Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. While Avilés’ acclaimed debut followed a maid working to bring structure and order to empty, uninhabited spaces, her follow-up feature is teeming with life, even if the subject matter might not lend itself to that at first glance.
“Tótem” begins with seven-year-old Sol (Naíma Sentíes) and her mother, Lucia (Lazua Larios), laughing together in a public bathroom.

This post contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."
"True Detective: Night Country" is starting to look more and more like a horror show. Two episodes into the season's six-part run, things in Ennis, Alaska just keep getting stranger. The severed tongue of Indigenous activist Anne appeared on a research facility's floor six years after she died. The scientists at said research facility (who remind us a lot of horror classic "The Thing") ended up dead in the snow, naked and frozen with ruptured eardrums and scratched-out eyes. At least two characters have heard a voice whisper "She's awake" in their minds, and a little girl is drawing pictures of a local folk figure — a woman in the snow with bloody, dripping hands. On top of all that, the ghost of Rust Cohle's dad may or may not be out in the wilderness, possibly worshipping the sky.

When it was announced that Issa Lopez would be taking over "True Detective" season 4 from show creator Nic Pizzolatto, some fans were understandably skeptical. Pizzolatto had created arguably the finest season of TV with the first installment of his crime thriller anthology series, though the second and third seasons failed to garner the same level of critical praise and fan adoration. Regardless, to many Pizzolatto was "True Detective," and whatever Lopez's project was going to be, it was difficult to see how it fit into the series' evolution.
In reality, however, after season 1, the varying quality of subsequent seasons proved that Pizzolatto was not some sort of infallible crime-writing god. In that sense, bringing on a new showrunner to write and direct seemed like a decent idea, especially if that new showrunner could restore what fans loved about the original series while providing a fresh take on the material. In that sense, bringing on a new showrunner to write and direct seemed like a decent idea, especially if that new showrunner could restore what fans loved about the original series while providing a fresh take on the material. Which,...

This article contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country" episode 2.
After three seasons, show creator Nic Pizzolatto has stepped away from "True Detective," clearing the way for new showrunner Issa López. The writer/director of 2017's excellent "Tigers Are Not Afraid" has created what might be the best season of "True Detective" since the original, restoring cosmic horror elements to the show and bringing back plenty of the dense philosophizing that Matthew McConaughey's Rust Cohle provided in season 1.
It seems that the inaugural season was a big influence on López, who has spoken about trying to emulate the tone of Pizzolatto's Louisiana noir. However, the new showrunner also found that her rewatch of season 1 led her to another influence: David Fincher's 1995 film "Seven." As she told the "Movies That Made Me" podcast, "What immediately hit me is how similar ['True Detective' season 1] is to 'Seven,'...

“True Detective: Night Country” showrunner Issa López took to X (formerly Twitter) the day after her season debuted on HBO and Max to urge fans to fight back against toxic trolls on Rotten Tomatoes. While the fourth season of the HBO crime series has earned glowing reviews (it boasts a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score from 73 reviews), there’s apparently a section of the fandom unhappy with the new direction of the show (the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is at 69%).
“So, if you liked last night’s [episode] of [‘True Detective: Night Country’], and have a Rotten Tomatoes account, maybe head over there and leave an audience review?” Lopez wrote to her followers. “The bros and hardcore fanboys of [Season 1] have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones.”

This post contains spoilers for "True Detective" season 1 and episode 1 of "True Detective: Night Country."
Since it aired back in 2014, the inaugural season of "True Detective" has become well-established as one of the finest seasons of TV ever created. Nic Pizzolatto's haunting crime thriller captivated audiences upon its arrival, and ten years later, despite being gifted two further seasons, fans still can't get over that first run of episodes. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey delivered standout performances as detectives Marty Hart and Rustin Cohle, with McConaughey writing a 450-page character analysis in preparation. But the show also drew in audiences with its enchantingly bleak tone and a mystery so layered even Harrelson and McConaughey's detectives couldn't fully solve it.
But there was one crucial element to season one's lasting appeal and fans' desire to revisit the mystery at its core: cosmic horror. Throughout season 1, the show made expert use...

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the season premiere of True Detective: Night Country.
The night is dark and full of terrors in Ennis, Alaska, the fictional setting for the fourth season of acclaimed crime anthology True Detective, which premiered tonight on HBO.
This is the Night Country of the show’s subtitle, where eight scientists from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station suddenly, one day in mid-December, disappear. Stepping in to investigate, at a time of year that sees constant darkness in the Arctic, are Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), women of quite different backgrounds and life philosophies. A highly inquisitive career cop, the former has lived in Alaska her whole life. Better relating to the largely Iñupiaq local community is the latter, a woman of Indigenous heritage with an ex-military background and a deeper sense of connection to the spiritual world. Whereas...

Through its first three seasons, HBO crime anthology True Detective liked to flirt with the occult. From Rust Cohle’s (Matthew McConaughey) otherworldly hallucinations in season 1 to the mystic hills of the Ozarks in season 3, the series frequently left the door open for realities beyond our own. Time is a flat circle, after all.
It’s only fitting then that True Detective season 4, subtitled True Detective: Night Country, has similarly cosmic origins. The season, which stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives investigating mysterious disappearances during the perpetual night of winter in Northwest Alaska, came together in a kismet fashion. In a pre-season conversation with journalists, Night Country writer, director, and producer Issa López discussed how she was already working on a very True Detective-esque script before she got an actual True Detective call from HBO.

Review: Few shows have made an impression the way the first season of True Detective did. While I enjoyed the second and third seasons of Nic Pizzolatto’s anthology thriller, neither could hold a candle to the Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey-led debut. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, True Detective was a philosophical and existential masterpiece full of quotable lines that had audiences brainstorming multiple timelines for ten weeks straight. Liz Danvers, chief of police in the remote Alaska town of Ennis, and heroine of True Detective: Night Country, is fond of telling other cops they’re asking the wrong questions, prodding them over and over until they ask the right one. With Night Country, there’s only one question: Was it worth resurrecting the long-dormant True Detective franchise — and without its original creator, Nic Pizzolatto?

Premiering almost exactly 10 years after the launch of the first season and almost exactly five years after the Mahershala Ali-centric third season — time being a flat circle, as the now-punchline goes — True Detective: Night Country is perched precariously in conversation with, and in contrast to, the show created by and steered by Nic Pizzolatto.
Created by Issa López, who wrote or co-wrote most of the season and directed all six episodes, Night Country is, in some ways, a throwback to the first season, bringing back the uncomfortable intersection of true crime narrative and supernatural undertones. The season also includes direct nods to imagery and dialogue from the first season — generally unnecessary citations that feel like a sop to the Pizzolatto-worshipping corner of the fandom, since otherwise Night Country is at odds with the previous seasons in terms of theme and overall perspective.

It's been four years since we dipped into the moral morass of "True Detective," and this season promises to be, literally, the darkest yet.
Set in the fictional small town of Ennis, Alaska, the show's fourth season, subtitled "Night Country," is going to use the region's punishingly long nights to evoke a deep sense of dread -- and it's going to do so without extensive story input from series creator Nic Pizzolatto. Though he will receive an executive producer credit, this season belongs to writer-director Issa López, who made a startlingly creepy impression in 2017 with her clever crime-horror flick "Tigers Are Not Afraid."
López is a particularly inspired choice because she values the importance of atmosphere in conveying a pervasive feeling of foreboding that sticks to you long after the film or episode is over. She also understands what made the first and best season of "True Detective" so effective...

"The Night Country – it takes us... one by one." HBO has unveiled the full trailer for the highly anticipated new season of the "True Country" crime series officially titled True Detective: Night Country. It's set in Alaska during the time of year when it's very dark and cold. This next season is written & directed entirely by the Mexican filmmaker Issa López, known for her film Tigers Are Not Afraid. "How far would you go to find the answers?" In Ennis, Alaska, the people that operate a research station vanish... The impressive full cast includes Jodie Foster as Liz Danvers, Kali Reis as Navarro, Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star Lablanc, and John Hawkes, with Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, and Joel D. Trust no one! "True Detective: Night Country" is just around the corner. The fourth season in HBO's anthology series, created and executive-produced by Nic Pizzolatto, is coming to the small screen in January, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited. I could spend this entire piece focusing only on one: the star casting of Jodie Foster. Foster is an absolute legend, a versatile powder keg of performance power who has taken some wild career swings as of late -- directing episodes of "Black Mirror" and "Tales From the Loop," executive producing and appearing in a documentary about pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy-Blaché, and leading the ensemble of the incisively political 2021 film "The Mauritanian."
In "True Detective," as we know from the previous trailer, Foster will play Detective Liz Danvers, who, alongside partner Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), is investigating a particularly gruesome and bizarre crime. Per that trailer: "We've got...

Based on Joshua Davis’s 2013 article for Wired, “A Radical Way of Unleashing a Generation of Geniuses,” Radical, a stirring, poignant drama co-written and adapted by Christopher Zalla (Blood of My Blood), literally and figuratively revolves around Jose Urbina Lopez Elementary School in Matamoros, Mexico. A town on the U.S/Mexico border, Matamoros suffers from crushing poverty, dilapidated infrastructure, and gang-related violence. It’s as hopeless a city or town — depressingly, painfully real by all accounts — as any put on Spanish-language, Mexico-set film since Luis Buñuel’s award-winning classic, Los Olvidados (The Forgotten Ones) almost 75 years ago. Unlike Issa Lopez’s recent — and it should be added, excellent — horror-thriller hybrid, Tigers Are Not Afraid, Radical centers the drama on the elementary school itself, the...

"True Detective" season 1 is a darkly beautiful masterpiece. Nearly a decade later, it's remembered as a moody, disturbing mystery about deeply flawed detectives investigating gross ritual murders, but the show was also wildly funny. Edgelord Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and womanizing "family man" Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) made a perfectly mismatched pair; Cohle spouted nihilistic nonsense and bizarre asides like "I don't sleep, I just dream," while openly irritated Hart stared at him like he'd just grown a second head.
Cohle became a major part of the pop cultural zeitgeist in 2014, the topic of many a parody, homage, and fan obsession. McConaughey's performance earned him an Emmy nomination and launched a new chapter for his career. Yet as "True Detective" got bigger, references to the character got broader and at times became co-opted by fans who'd look at contextless statements like "I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution,...

Everything you need to know to decide whether you’ll watch True Detective: Night Country lies in this sentence from the new series’ new teaser: “We’ve got five bodies frozen into a giant block of flesh, and no answers.” Season Four of the anthology series will premiere on Max on Jan. 14 (y’know, peak bodyberg time.)
The clip sets an ominous tone, opening with Detective Evangeline Navarro (played by Kali Reis) saying that sometimes she wishes she could disappear. “This is Alaska,” says Jodie Foster’s character Detective Liz Danvers.

Thanks to the massive success of "Get Out," the last several years have seen an influx of Black horror films, bringing some much-needed racial diversity to a predominantly white genre. Latino horror has also been going strong as ever of late, with films like "Tigers Are Not Afraid" and "La Llorona" reaping critical accolades left and right. But what about Asian-American horror? No, the J-horror remake trend of the 2000s doesn't count, not least of all because most of those "Americanized" re-imaginings centered on white characters.

Most fans of "True Detective" will agree that season 1 was a high point for Nic Pizzolatto's crime drama. The fastidious show creator and writer maintained tight control over the series for its first three seasons, which often caused problems for the directors — especially Cary Fukunaga. For "True Detective" season 4, Pizzolatto handed the reins to "Tigers Are Not Afraid" director Issa López, who can hopefully return the series to the standard established by its brilliant inaugural season.
That's going to be a tough feat. Season 1 of "True Detective" had so much going for it, it's hard to see how it could be matched, let alone bested. The eight episodes were helped tremendously by two career-best performances from leading men Woody Harrelson as Detective Marty Hart, and Matthew McConaughey as Detective Rust Cohle.
