  • Absolutely loved every moment of this movie. Everyone should take time and watch this beautiful movie.

Tugs at the heart strings that's for sure. Beautiful animals and the characters were well played.
  • What's really interesting about the movie is how interactive the actors seem to be with the lion or lions in a movie about lion preserving. I'm sure some of it was digital manipulation but how much I cannot tell. Just a thought how familiar the animal got with the people. Anyway, I got the message. It's a good one but this flick was too much about he message and it did loose a few entertaining factors because. Yet, still enjoyed it.
  • Saw this with my mom 'cause she really wanted to see it and it was her birthday. And she likes it quite a bit, and I at least don't regret having seen it.

But it is incredibly kitschy, manipulative and nothing new. The message though, it mostly gets across, and I agree with it of course. I don't at all hate the flick, but it's too much of a standard family movie.

Gotta add as well that it was fun and incredible to see that lion grow up, I won't lie, that got me a little emotional here and there. Beautiful animal. And btw. if any kid got inspired by this film, it did something right in the end.

I enjoyed the quality and intentions of the film, but I eventually wanted the lion to eat Mia! At what point in the film, even before the secret of what Mia's father was doing, was she going to be disciplined? With that being said, I am all for conservation of animals and nature.

But you should not shoot your parent!

Story of a relationship between a young girl and a lion and what she does when his life is threatened. Filmed over a three year period as both develop in age. I really like this one. It's a nice relationship movie and to me much more honest than say "Out of Africa."
  • A very nice movie, to be watched by whole family. A little bit predictive, but otherwise ok.
  • It's such a pity this film isn't more popular! The pace of the narrative is great. It is engaging from the first minute. It's also evident to see how long they've taken to film it, as the boys grow along with the lion - about three years. While it focuses on the relationship between Mia and this wonderful lion, it also deals with family ties, connection with nature and the hard way in which these animal farms have to survive. Super recommended!
  • I feel really conflicted about this movie. On one hand it is a masterpiece regarding the animals and sceneries. Respecting all life is an important value, which is well represented in the movie. However I find the movie highly disturbing regarding the message about parent-child relationship. The parents in the movie are considered inhumane and callous, who can't understand the bond between humans and animals. In the second half of the movie the rebellious teenage girl is considered to be the heroine, whose actions are highly questionable. The story completely ignores reality about risks treating a wild animal as family member. I would recommend watching the movie first, and then decide whether to watch together with kids.
  • REVIEW - MIA AND THE WHITE LION

Occasionally while watching all of the films I find a gem, a film that stands out and as an impartial independent reviewer I can write without influence.

This is one such film, whilst the acting could be better and the editing is terrible the subject matter and of course the white lion truly make this a film too watch.

Simple story but what I absolutely loved about this film is the time it took to make, it must have been filmed over a period of about 4 years because you literally see the same lion grow from a lion cub to maturity and the children grow also!

Of course the actual white lion steals every scene Charlie is in and the actors were in my personal opinion very very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a beautiful creature.

Easy to follow but with a very important message to share about tourism and hunting.

One to watch but as I've said acting isn't the best and the editing is terrible but on this occasion I can forgive.

    Rating 8 out of 10

This movie gives kids and especially pre-teens the wrong message. Parents DO KNOW BETTER than kids!

No sane parent would allow a girl be in the same cage as a 1 year old lion. Girl is constantly treated as the heroe of the movie for going against what her parents command her to do.

On top of that the SPOILED girl misbehaves and shoots her dad on the leg and again she is rewarded and treated as the heroe.

I regret watching this movie with my kids and had to talk to them afterwards for several minutes.

And yes, killing animals is wrong. They know that.

It's a beautiful Movie with a powerful message.
  • This guys thought that having a white lion was enough to make a good movie. Actors are terrible, but the script is the worst collection of absurdities you can imagine.

Such a good movie. Authentic, heartbreaking and motivates to reflect.
  • For people who know how lions live / studied them / watched documentary about them, this movie won't be very good. Also it's obvious from the movie it's hard to record lions, you cannot fully tame lions.
  • It's so good movies like this to raise awareness for those who cannot speak for themselves. Humans should not hunt animals just for pleasure. This is NOT RIGHT! Watch THE COVE to fully understand how devious politicians and governments have become to hide their crimes from the public. Humanity is cruel!
  • My wife and I watched this at home on DVD from our public library.

Because the story involves a white lion growing from a newborn to an adult male over a three year period, and a young girl, Mia, growing from about 11 to about 14, the movie was actually shot over a three year time period. So there is no substitution of characters, we actually witness the lion and the two kids growing up.

Mia lives with her dad, mom, and brother on a farm in South Africa, primarily raising then selling animals that otherwise would be in the wild. Like lions. One day dad brings home this tiny, cute white lion cub, and they call him Charlie. At first Mia is annoyed with the cub, wants him to leave her alone, but they eventually bond.

When Charlie is about to be sold Mia finds out the actual fate of most of the "trophy" animals, they are sold to become targets of big game hunters in a captive environment, still a legal activity in South Africa. Mia decides to take drastic action to try and save Charlie from that fate.

There is a good "extra" on the disc telling about the process and what had to be done to train the lion to become the young actress' friend and not eat her.

Most annoying and unbelievably stupid main character that I've seen in a long time. I didn't go into this expecting riveting storytelling or anything, but some of this crap was baaaaad, even for a family film. Rated it a 2, solely for the lion .

Just watched this film with my two children who are 9 and 7. We enjoyed it a lot. It is beautifully shot and carefully filmed. The film also carries a powerful message that will resonate for children for care for our world.

"Mia et le lion blanc" is a French/German/South African co-production that is despite the French title a mostly English-language movie. The director is Gilles de Maistre and he was also partially in charge of the script of this 95-minute movie together with his wife Prune. A very experienced French filmmaker, even if mostly for the small screen recently, I must say I expected better quality here to be honest. Maybe French film buffs will recognize more familiar faces, but honestly the only one I knew was Melanie Laurent and I find it a bit sad she went from working with Tarantino to this. It is called a kids, more like a family movie, but to be honest, this is not a movie I would want my children to see. The first half is still somewhat fine, but the longer it goes the more absurd it becomes. Early on, they included a story about a girl living in South Africa with her parents and brother and she preferred to stay in London with her friends. That was okay. They gave it the right amount of elaboration until the homesickness vanishes and we see her clikc away the Skype call from her buddy. Also the character introduction to everybody wasn't as bad like with the girl really liking the lion cub, but not wanting anybody to see how she assimilates. There is one major weakness thhough, namely the spot in which the lions were held. Even if this film had been about the father selling them to honorable men, this was a joke. You can't keep huge predators in small areas like these whil saying you are a good person and treat them right as the film wanted to convince us. Then afterward, it all goes south and also not too slowly. The story line about how the girl is really close with the lion and cannot let go of his proximity felt as expected as it was shallow and predictable with these scenes of the lion scratching a tourist or the cringeworthy scene when the brother is slightly injured. Actually, I did feel kinda sorry for the brother, but for another reason, namely how he had really a lot of screen time, but hardly any material to work with. The parents had a little more, well the father you could say. Laurent was also completely wasted story-wise and like I said it felt painful to see her like this. Her only somewhat baity moment with her son towards the end could not save it. And as we are speaking about the last quarter of the film already, lets include several scenes here that felt really bad and unrealistic. One would be the way she is walking with the big fully grown lion through something like a shopping center with no police nearby. Police generally are once again displayed like idiots I must say. Next scene when she uses the lion to trick her father and eventually shoots him with a sedative in the leg. Didn't feel like she would do that. The perhaps weakest moment of them all was when she begs the lion to kill her. Like seriously? This scene did not make any sense whatsoever compared to everything we knew about the girl before that. Next scene would be secenral scenes actually, namely the long walk to the reservatory that felt pseudo epic. Same can be said about the father stepping in front of the lion in the really weak big emotional (at least that's what it should be) final scene towards the end. And yeah of course he walks exactly the path to where they cannot shoot him anymore. Oh my, with these letters and words you see on screen eventually, this film is sending a good message per definition. But the exact outcome is very disappointing and said message would have deserved a far better execution. Also as I watched the German dub version, I was not impressed by that, especially the line delivery from the voice actress of the girl / young woman that was really hitting all the wrong marks at times. But okay, that is not a problem of the original movie. Anyway, early on I would have given it a 3 out of 5, but the way the quality declined more and more to a pretty ridiculous level, I only give it a 2 out of 5 all in all. Looking back at it, yes it has a cute white lion cub, but as charming as it may be, it also contributes to the art of pseudo-depth and shallow entertainment that many will probably not see through. Good for them. Bad for everybody else. Not recommended.
  • Thought the film was very good. My 7 year old cried her eyes out at the end. Such a moving story. Worth the watch.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This film is anti-science nonsense that will harm understanding of nature of kids who view it.

I am sure I will get down-voted for saying this but the unanimous consensus of the science shows legal hunting has zero impact, ZERO, on population survival of large predators.

95% of the problem is habitat destruction though conversion of land to agriculture, and about 5% of the problem is illegal poaching, which tends to accelerate once a species gets reduced by loss of habitat.

African lions require huge amount of habitat, quite simply because maintaining a sufficient amount of prey does, and their prey species need very large ranges. People in Europe buying cut flowers from Africa, and other African cash crops, are who is killing the African lion. It is a certainty that this production team from France has killed more lions buying African gown lilies, roses and carnations in Paris markets than any and all legal hunting. Huge swaths of former African lion habitat have been denied to lions as land has been covered to cut flower growing -- literally millions of acres of land. That is not for food production but for flowers imported into Europe.

Secondly this film gives an insanely inaccurate and misinformative portray of lion behavior. Any large mammal biologist would tell you.

It does so to give a false sympathy. We should be sympathetic to lions, but based on admiring their grandeur as being among the most evolved top predators, not for some cuddly nonsense. If you want a realistic film on how humans interact with, and misunderstand top predators, watch "Grizzly man" by Werner Herzog.

I am sure i will get downvoted by people who do not understand the science. But the fact is legal hunting has NO negative impact and a large positive impact in that it plows huge amounts of money into economic basis that allows land lions live on to be kept for LIONS and not converted to agriculture. For every lion legally hunted, the fees pay for land for 18 lions to be kept from being converted to agricultural use.

It is not just denial of of the land to the lions, 130 TIMES as many lions are killed each year by habitat loss, direct killing by FARMERS, in S. Africa, Malawi, Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, than legal hunting.

What is driving down lion populations --- according to the SCIENCE: 1) conversion of land for agriculture (loss of aggregate habitat, and loss of habitat "connectivity." 2) Native bush-meat trade within Africa (illegal poaching for meat consumed in Africa) 3) Other poaching (China biggest user of poached animal product) 4) Killing by farmers tor prevent livestock loss.

Only one method of killing lions INCREASES lions: Legal hunting. Because the money from that is plowed directly back into maintaining or increasing habitat.
  • "Mia and the White Lion" feels like a movie/vehicle created specifically for spreading an important message. The script doesn't feel creatively inspired but more like a series of cliched scenarios thought up during a board meeting. The movie has some quality actors which is good because some of the ham-fisted dialogue and scenes in less skilled hands could have been dire. I also feel like I must mention that intermittently, and awkwardly, a legend about a white lion saving the world is brought up that the teenage kids unrealistically believe throughout the movie.

The movie has some good qualities too. The scenery and the animals are beautiful. The baby animals are cute. The acting is good especially given what the actors have to work with. The message is important and a good reason to support the movie. Unfortunately I can't say what the message is without spoiling the plot since it's not revealed until the end of the second act. Overall I give the movie 5 stars. It's watchable but not quite good.

This movie really makes you have a look into what happened. It's really sad to see, but it really lets you see what needs to be done to save the lions.
