Who Plays Nora In The Last Of Us Season 2
Image
HBO's TV adaptation of "The Last of Us" has brought in a ton of new talent for its sophomore season, many of whom are portraying characters from the second video game in the series, "The Last of Us Part II." Anyone who's played the game will be familiar with Nora, a key part of Abby's crew, former Firefly, and member of the Washington Liberation Front. The character was voiced by Chelsea Tavares in the game, who you may also recognize from her role as Patience Robinson on "All American."

Nora is back in the "Last of Us" TV series, played this time by Tati Gabrielle, a rising star who already has some major TV credits to her name. She's also something of a regular for Naughty Dog, the game developer responsible for the "Last of Us" games. Gabrielle previously played the villainous Jo Braddock in "Uncharted," the live-action Tom Holland adaptation of Naughty Dog's tomb-robbing,...

T.J. Miller Joins Cast of Indie Techno-Thriller ‘A.I. Heart U’
T.J. Miller at an event for Yogi Bear (2010)
T.J. Miller has signed on to star in the upcoming independent techno-thriller A.I. Heart U, written and directed by Jason Cook. The film, which explores artificial intelligence and its impact on human relationships, features an ensemble cast that includes Zach Gilford, Heather Morris, Kayla Compton, and Jonathan Kite.

Miller will portray Marco, an eccentric AI tech partner, in what the filmmaker describes as a cautionary tale about artificial intelligence. “This is a cautionary tale about AI, but framing it as a tool, not an inherent evil. This is a story about a bad guy enabled by AI, kinda like Faust,” Cook said.

The project is being produced by Cook alongside Trent Garret under their newly formed Blue Collar Productions. A.I. Heart U is the first of four planned films in a fully funded slate from the company. The production has been underway in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon.

Seth Meyers Reveals 16 Movies That Are Shorter Than Trump’s Joint Address | Video
Image
Donald Trump’s first joint address to Congress of his second term set a record for longest address in modern history on Tuesday. So on Wednesday night, Seth Meyers recommended some movies that would fill that same amount of time.

Usually, the NBC host encourages viewers to remember that he hosts a comedy show, so no one should be getting their news solely from him. But after Trump’s speech, Meyers kicked off his “A Closer Look” segment by walking that back indefinitely.

“All I can say is, from now on, you can get your news from me. Don’t put yourself through this s–t anymore,” he said. “When there’s a big old, dumb speech like this, instead of watching, just do other things. Reconnect with family, watch ‘Severance’ or just go to bed early and dream sweet dreams about simpler times when you didn’t need to...

Image
Pictures: Netflix

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Why Wizards Of Waverly Place Star Jake T. Austin Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
Jake T. Austin was a child actor who initially found success with voice work in the cartoon movies "Everybody's Hero" and "The Ant Bully" before landing two major roles on the biggest kids' networks. He voiced Dora's cousin Diego on Nickelodeon's "Dora the Explorer" and "Go Diego Go!" and played Max Russo, the youngest brother and mischievous practical joker on "Wizards of Waverly Place." The latter quickly became one of the best Disney Channel shows, skyrocketed Selena Gomez into superstardom, and ran from 2007 to 2012. Jake T. Austin also starred in the Disney Channel Original movie "Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board" and did voice work for "Rio," its sequel, and "The Emoji Movie"

The network has ordered a pilot for a new dating format – hosted by Mom and Scary Movie star Anna Faris and Rick Edwards, who previously hosted The Courtship for the network.

Love Takes A Village will see singletons go on a series of blind dates with people looking to win a second date. Quick Links Popeye Was Set to Be an All-American Action Hero Producers Were Determined to Put a New Twist on an Old Character The Film Failed to Set Off the Mark for a Second Time

Though the world of animation is incredibly diverse and dynamic, Popeye has remained at the forefront for over 90 years. Complete with an unusual look, a passionate heart, and gigantic forearms, this sailor has been a keen fixture in popular culture for years and continues to be adored by fans. As such, it comes as no surprise that production companies are always determined to expand his lore via films, TV shows, and comic strips.

Back in 2010, Sony announced that it was going to put a new spin on this beloved character and recruited an all-star cast of animators and producers. But, after failing to hit the mark, the company decided to place all its efforts into another venture,...

What is James Corden's net worth in 2024?
Image
James Corden walked away from The Late Late Show in April 2023. On the surface, it seemed like Corden was bailing on a cushy job that paid well. But the comedian had his reasons ... and a net worth that made the decision a little more understandable.

Corden was a surprise pick to replace Craig Ferguson as host of The Late Late Show in 2014. American audiences were largely unfamiliar with Corden, who had a bigger following in his native United Kingdom.

However, CBS quickly introduced Corden to America. Signature bits like "Carpool Karaoke" and "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts" brought something new to the late-night TV landscape.

Along the way, Corden earned millions as Late Late Show host and simultaneously appeared in multiple film and TV projects. All totaled, Corden's net worth stands at an estimated $70 million in 2024 (per CelebrityNetWorth).

How does James Corden make his money?

Streaming Ratings: AMC Shows ‘Dark Winds,’ ‘A Discovery of Witches’ Get Netflix Boost
Image
AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.

Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)

It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.

Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

Streaming Ratings: ‘Emily in Paris’ Opens Lower With Half-Season Release
Image
Netflix released the first half of Emily in Paris‘ fourth season Aug. 15, and as a result got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere.

The dramedy starring Lily Collins gathered 792 million minutes of viewing in the United States for its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. That was good for third place among original series and ninth overall, but was also down 43 percent from the 1.39 billion minutes for the first week of season three’s release — which featured all 10 episodes of that installment, as opposed to five this time out.

The previous week’s top two shows, Prison Break and The Umbrella Academy, held their spots for the week of Aug. 12-18 — and their numbers were consistent as well. Prison Break actually ticked up a little to 1.61 billion minutes of viewing (versus 1.6 billion the week before), while The Umbrella Academy (1.39 billion) was...

AfrAId (2024) Review
Image
In AfrAId, Chris Weitz takes a concept brimming with potential—artificial intelligence gone awry—and delivers a film that unfortunately never quite lives up to its premise. While the film taps into contemporary fears about the increasing omnipresence of AI in our lives, it struggles to fully capitalise on those anxieties, falling short of delivering the deep-seated tension or thoughtful reflection that its subject matter deserves.

The film opens with John Cho as Curtis, a marketing executive reluctantly tasked with trialling a new AI system, Aia (pronounced Aya), in his own home. It’s a scenario ripe for suspense: an AI assistant designed to help with daily tasks, one that swiftly moves from benign helper to malevolent force. Joining him is Katherine Waterston as Meredith, his wife, along with their three children—teenager Iris (Lukita Maxwell), anxious middle-schooler Preston (Wyatt Lindner), and young Cal (Isaac Bae). This set-up, reminiscent of...

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, is on Netflixs top ten 21 years after it made its debut in theaters in 2003. Lee Daniels’ ‘The Deliverance’ Leads Netflix, ‘Twisters’ Returns to #1 at iTunes
Image
“Twisters” (Universal) wasn’t the biggest film of the summer. But it is becoming the comeback kid among the group, both theatrically and at home.

The tornado-focused special effects disaster film just had a very rare weekend in theaters. In its seventh weekend, losing 200 screens, its gross increased 17 percent. That comes in its third week at home on PVOD. And right at the same time, “Twisters” returned to #1 at iTunes, edging out the second weekend of “Inside Out 2” (Disney), 2024’s biggest hit.

The Pixar film retains its top spot at Fandango, with the advantage that its $24.99 rental cost gives it with that site listing by revenue earned, not transactions like iTunes does. In any event, the split decision this week continues a now multi-month trend of no film placing #1 at both for two consecutive weeks.

After a rare repeat at Netflix, where Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry’s...

These Former Survivor Players Are Now Thriving In Hollywood

Survivor has been on air for more than 40 seasons, in which time a healthy number of alumni have also gone on to make a real name for themselves beyond the show in Hollywood.

As of August 2024, a total of 715 people had played the CBS Reality TV competition series. This includes the 18 who contested for the crown in the 47th installment of the show, filmed in May and June, and penciled in for a September 18 premiere.

In those dozens of years, the series has produced some really iconic players, such as old-time legend Boston Rob Mariano, deemed by many to be the most iconic of all.

‘AfrAId’ Review: Chris Weitz’s Tech-Scare Thriller Says AI Is the Worst
Image
Chris Weitz’s new horror movie “AfrAId” does something I didn’t know could be done yet: It makes me nostalgic for the early 2010s. That was 15 years ago? Holy moly, am I getting old. Wait, holy moly, I just unironically wrote “holy moly.” Twice — no! Three times! Oh, I don’t like that. I don’t like that at all.

But there’s something to like about “AfrAId.” Weitz’s latest is a throwback to the early days of Blumhouse, when the horror studio made waves by producing extremely cheap horror movies and making a tidy profit even if they weren’t all big hits. The early Blumhouse formula was about seemingly normal families squaring off against evil in their seemingly normal houses, a premise that makes for a simple but effective allegory for suburban strife. Sometimes it was a ghost, sometimes it was a demon, one time it was aliens.

Scarlett Johansson's Divisive Mind-Bending Sci-Fi Movie Is A Netflix Hit 10 Years Later
Image
Scarlett Johansson's divisive and mind-bending sci-fi movie, Lucy, is a Netflix hit 10 years later. Written and directed by Luc Beeson, the 2014 sci-fi film follows a woman who, after a powerful drug is accidentally absorbed into her bloodstream, gains superhuman abilities, including telekinesis and telepathy, and seeks revenge against her former captors. Other than Johansson in the lead role, the cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik, Amr Waked, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Pilou Asbk, and Lio Tipton.

Now, a decade after its initial release in 2014, Johansson's divisive and mind-bending sci-fi film is a Netflix hit. Lucy ranked eighth on Netflix's Global Top 10 chart for the week of August 19-25 with 4.4 million views and 6.5 million hours viewed. In the second half of the chart, Lucy is sandwiched between Tkunb and The Emoji Movie above it, and Night School and Kingsman: The Golden Circle below it.

‘Inside Out 2’ Costs $24.99 to Watch at Home, Where It Went Straight to #1
Image
“Inside Out 2” (Disney), the biggest domestic movie since “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, finally arrived at home. Released in theaters June 10, it still ranked #10 at the box office last weekend — which is probably why it could debut with a $24.99 three-day rental and take first place at both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (ranking by revenue).

This week Netflix had three of its own original films among the top four, led by “The Union” starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. The secret agent comedy-thriller is #1 for the second week, uncommon among Netflix Originals.

VOD charts also saw Neon’s low-budget sleeper success “Longlegs” place third at both sites. This came after six weeks of strong theatrical success, with $73 million so far.

Unusually, iTunes and Fandango shared the same top four films. “Twisters” (Universal), last week’s #1, is second at both, while “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) is fourth.

Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry’s ‘Union’ Tops the Streaming Chart
Image
Time and time again, we’ve seen how combining big-name Hollywood stars in a made-for-streaming movie is a recipe for success. Netflix’s latest attempt at that formula teams up Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry in “The Union,” and it pays off. The action comedy sits atop the streaming chart on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of August 12 to 18, 2024.

“American Murder: Laci Peterson,” a true crime docuseries about the 2002 murder, comes in at No. 2 this week. It’s followed by “Furioisa, A Mad Max Saga,” which, conveniently for viewers searching across streamers, is on Max. The summer blockbuster, which hit theaters on Memorial Day, is the third-most watched program this week.

The fourth season of Netflix’s popular “Emily in Paris” enters the chart at No. 4 this week after it was added to the library on August 15.

In a surprising twist, The Emoji Movie, a film often cited as one of the worst animated movies ever, has climbed to the top of Netflix's U.S. charts, securing a spot in the streaming giant's Top 10 list.

Originally released in 2017, the movie was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, earning a mere 6% on Rotten Tomatoes and frequently ranked as the worst film of its year. Despite this, the film has recently found a resurgence in popularity, puzzling many viewers and critics alike. The Emoji Movie was nominated for the Razzie category "So Rotten You Loved It" and won several dubious honors, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screen Combo, and Worst Screenplay. Notably, it became the first animated film to win in any of these categories, cementing its place in film history as one of the most critically panned movies.

The Emoji Movie ranks as the fourth most-watched movie on Netflix globally for the week of August 12 15. The film has amassed 11.2 million hours viewed and 7.7 million total views despite having earned mostly negative reviews upon its theatrical release in 2017. As ‘Twisters’ Leads VOD, Studios Are Getting Better at Timing Their Streaming Debuts for #1
Image
For the sixth straight Monday, a new and different film is #1 on VOD at both iTunes and Fandango. “Twisters” (Universal), which grossed almost $10 million in theaters last weekend, is the latest summer hit to reach home viewing.

By design or accident, studios have spaced out their releases so every week brings a new top film. Since the VOD debut of “Civil War” back in late May-early June, no film has enjoyed more than a week as #1 on VOD.

As always, the timing for PVOD debuts don’t align with theatrical runs; “Twisters” and “Despicable Me 2” were released later than “Inside Out 2.” That’s no surprise — Universal is usually the quickest to go to PVOD; Disney tested the waters with streaming exclusives and same-day PVOD but now maintains the longest windows. “Inside Out 2” will hit PVOD after its 10th weekend, while it’s still in the theatrical top...

A 2018 Kevin Hart And Tiffany Haddish Comedy Is Bringing Laughs To Netflix's Top Charts
Image
When Kevin Hart started out, he made himself the butt of most of the jokes in his self-deprecating standup routines. Now, he fancies himself as a Hip Hop mogul type, launching businesses left and right and producing a steady stream of TV shows and films. Unfortunately, this flurry of output in recent years hasn't all been that great. Earlier this year, Hart starred in "Lift," which topped the Netflix charts despite being yet another generic streaming flick quickly buried by the tide of "content" spewing forth in the streaming age. Prior to that, Hart tried to bring an air of prestige to his streaming exploits by convincing Wesley Snipes to play his brother in Netflix limited series "True Story." Sadly for the comedian, Snipes proved to be the best thing about the show.

But none of this has deterred Hart. He's hosting Peacock chat shows, playing vault hunters in the...

Bruce Willis' Action-Comedy Comic Book Adaptation Finds New Success On Netflix 14 Years Later
Image
Red's unexpected success on Netflix 14 years later is a testament to its enduring charm and star-studded cast. Both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, Red exceeded expectations and even earned a Golden Globe nomination. A sequel was released nine years later, though with Bruce Willis' retirement, the possibility of Red 3 is slim.

Red finds new success on Netflix 14 years after its release. Based on the DC Comics series of the same name, the 2010 action comedy follows Frank Moses, a former black-ops agent who reassembles his old team to uncover who was behind an assassination attempt on his life. Bruce Wills leads Red's cast, with the all-star ensemble also including Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker, Rebecca Pidgeon, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, and James Remar.

Now, 14 years after its original release, Willis' action-comedy comic book adaptation has found new success on Netflix. Red ranked...

The Emoji Movie 2: Will a Sequel Ever Release?
Image
Fans are curious whether a sequel to 2017's The Emoji Movie (The Emoji Movie 2) could ever be released in theaters or elsewhere.

This 2017 animated movie brought real-world emojis to life in the city of Textopolis, which is inside a smartphone. While each emoji has one facial expression for life, T.J. Miller's Gene is a lighthearted and cheerful emoji with multiple expressions who tries to become more "normal."

Teaming up with other emojis, he travels through apps and eventually discovers a danger that could threaten their home as they know it.

The Emoji Movie Is the #1 Movie on Netflix Despite a Terrible Rt Score
Image
The Emoji Movie is as bad as everyone says cynical, lazy, and full of product placement. The recent success on streaming platforms like Netflix highlights the resiliency of the animation industry. While children's entertainment remains a strong market, The Emoji Movie is still not worth revisiting.

Before breaking through with the Spider-Verse films, Sony Pictures Animation was not widely known for its quality seal of approval. On the contrary, outside Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, the underrated Surfs Up, and the first Hotel Transylvania, their early resume leaves much to be desired. Yet nothing theyve made has come even close to the level of infamy that The Emoji Movie hit instantly upon its release in 2017. To this day, it remains the only animated film to win a Razzie Award for Worst Picture, and its almost unanimously regarded as one of the worst in the medium ever. On Rotten Tomatoes,...

Infamous 2017 Comedy Movie With 6% Rt Score Climbs To Netflix's Top 10 Chart In US
Image
The Emoji Movie has become the 10th most-watched movie on Netflix in the U.S. the week of August 5. This has become the case in spite of the movie's 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie may have found a wide audience because it is new on the platform.

The Emoji Movie has become a Netflix hit in the United States. The 2017 animated feature stars T.J. Miller as a Meh emoji whose ability to show multiple expressions makes him an outcast in a strictly regimented emoji society that exists inside the smartphone of teenage boy Alex. The movie was critically reviled, earning a 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes and going on to win the Worst Picture Razzie Award along with three others including Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.

Netflix has now calculated their official Top 10 chart of the most-watched movies in the United States for the week of August 5 through August 11. The...

‘The Emoji Movie,’ Remembered as One of the Worst Animated Films Ever Made, Is Now #1 on Netflix
Image
The #1 movie of 2024 (“Inside Out 2”), as well as #3 (“Despicable Me 4”), and #7 (“Kung Fu Panda”) are animated features. The medium’s representations continue in streaming results, with Universal releasing “Despicable Me 4” on PVOD last week. An immediate #1 at both iTunes and Fandango, it remained at #5 in theaters last weekend. It added another $8 million for a $330 million totall as usual, marketing for home viewing might have boosted its box office.

And somehow, Sony’s 2017 “The Emoji Movie” is now a hit. It grossed $217 million worldwide amidst blistering reviews; it debuted on Netflix this weekend and jumped to #1. It reinforces the notion that animation is foolproof as long as it seems fresh.

It is one of four animated titles on Netflix’s list, which includes one Netflix original, as well as “Trolls Band Together” and “The Lorax” from Universal. However, the eight-month run of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” may be over.

James Cordens 6% Rotten Tomatoes Disaster Just Got a Major Streaming Update
Image
One James Corden project that failed to reach even a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes has found a new streaming home now seven years later. The Emoji Movie, which Corden stars in alongside Maya Rudolph, T.J. Miller, and Anna Faris, is officially streaming on Netflix starting today. The film joins The Umbrella Academy Season 4 and Shahmaran as the only projects to premiere on Netflix today. In addition to Corden, Rudolph, Miller, and Faris, The Emoji Movie also features several major actors in supporting roles, such as Jennifer Coolidge, Patrick Stewart, Christina Aguilera, Sofa Vergara, and even Josh Keaton. The Emoji Movie currently sits at a dismal 6% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, accompanied by a slightly higher but still disappointing 36% from general audiences.

‘Inside Out 2’ reviews: Disney sequel ‘clears the head and warms the heart,’ living up to Oscar-winning original
Image
On June 14, 2024, Walt Disney Studios and Pixar released “Inside Out 2” nationwide. The animated movie dives into the mind of newly minted teenager Riley, where her Emotions Anger (voice of Lewis Black), Fear (voice of Tony Hale), Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) and Disgust (voice of Liza Lapira) must make room for new Emotions, including Envy (voice of Ayo Edebiri), Anxiety (voice of Maya Hawke) and Embarrassment (voice of Paul Walter Hauser). “Inside Out 2” is directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen.

Just like the movie’s Oscar-winning predecessor from 2015, critics are loving this sequel — it’s holding fresh at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads, “Spicing things up with the wrinkle of teenage angst, ‘Inside Out 2’ clears the head and warms the heart by living up to its predecessor’s emotional intelligence.” Read our full review round-up below.

Box office preview: ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ and ‘The Garfield Movie’ should make this a Memorial Day to remember
Image
For decades, Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been a hugely busy weekend at the box office, often offering the biggest of franchise sequels — or in this case, two potential franchise prequels? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

The Memorial Day bump that has helped so many franchise installments before will certainly be in play for George Miller‘s return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel that tells the earlier story of Charlize Theron‘s character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, joined by Chris Hemsworth as a new antagonist called Dementus, as well a mix of new characters and ones that appeared in “Fury Road.”

Miller’s career as a filmmaker pretty much began back in 1980 with “Mad Max,” a cult action movie that introduced Mel Gibson to the world,...

‘Spider-Verse’ Directors on What to Expect From Third Movie and Demanding Respect for Animation: ‘Without It, Everybody Hurts’
Image
In case you didn’t know, animation directors are also auteurs. According to Yahoo Finance, the global animation market reached more than $400 billion at the end of 2023. That was up from $391 billion one year before. And yet, animated projects are not automatically covered by the WGA, are separate from the DGA, and are consistently overlooked for their filmmaking achievements.

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the directing trio of Sony Animation’s animated box office smash “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” tell Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that there are some critically needed changes in Hollywood.

“I think it’s worth repeating: animation is a big business for the industry,” says Dos Santos. “We bring a ton to the table; without it, everybody hurts. I also want to add that doing an animated film shouldn’t be a sacrifice for the artist doing it.”

Powers adds: “I do...

The Emoji Movie Pitch Meeting — Revisited
Image
The Emoji Movie was unlikely to succeed due to comparisons to similar films and oversaturation in the market. Sony's rushed production of the movie and outdated humor made it even more irrelevant over time. The Emoji Movie's marketing, including controversial trailers and backlash over a parody poster, further contributed to its failure.

Over six years after its failure, the latest episode of Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series is revisiting its original analysis of The Emoji Movie. The animated adventure was set in the digital world of Textopolis and centered on the "meh" emoji Gene as he set off in the hopes of breaking his code to offer more expressions, jumping between apps on his owner's smartphone and meeting various other emojis, including Hi-5 and Jailbreak. Despite featuring an ensemble cast including T.J. Miller, Anna Faris, James Corden, Maya Rudolph and Patrick Stewart, the movie was a modest box...

BFI London Review: Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Expands the Flock in Clever Ways
Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, David Bradley, Lynn Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Josie Sedgwick-Davies, and Bella Ramsey in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023)
Many people (this reviewer included) scoffed at the announcement of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Something about the ludicrous title and 23-year hiatus gave the air of a studio in desperation, or one searching for an Oscar contender. How wrong we were. For in spite of the long wait and changes of personnel––Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton replace Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha; Sam Fell replaces Nick Park and Peter Lord––this latest adventure is every bit as well-crafted, cleverly written, and stuffed with gallinaceous puns as its predecessor.

We rejoin the flock, like the cast, in much-changed circumstances. For one thing, they have built a small island paradise––it looks more like the Shire than Yorkshire––where they are free to work and roam without the threat of human intervention. There is also a lively new addition to the group: Rocky and Ginger’s chirpy chick Molly,...
