  • This show is amazing! It's an entertaining mix of satire, suspense, sci-fi, horror, and of course, the possibility of romance, with the story set on a political stage. And did I mention ants? No need to be into entomology or politics to enjoy it, but for the political tragic, there are appearances from wannabes Clinton, Trump and Bernard someone or another, with plenty of wheeling and dealing along the way.

Don't be put off by the stupefying title of the first episode, ("The Insanity Principle How Extremism in Politics is Threatening Democracy in the 21st Century").

    Give this show a go!
  • I mainly watch Netflix or Amazon shows lately. Saw this on Amazon and decided to give it a try. Wasn't expecting much. I don't enjoy political shows as such. I was hooked within the first 10 minutes. One of the best pilots I've seen. The protagonist Laurel, an idealist documentary film maker, gets caught in the web of politics & mystery during her casual visit with her political brother & dad in D.C.

We follow her as she discovers the crazy politics mixed with some sci-fi mystery. We quickly identify with her as she navigates the capitol like a fish out of water, yet can see underneath the surface with her astute mind. The characters & their interaction is really fun to watch.

I hope many people watch this brilliant show. It's really like nothing TV right now. I'd say it's a combination of Veep & The X-files done in the most brilliant way.

    Warning: Spoilers
This review DOES NOT bash the show for how it portrays the Republican or Democratic party; that's just ridiculous; however, the show does do an outstanding job at mocking all politics in general!

I will caveat this with the fact that I am fan of Sci-Fi and "B" movies; so, I may have lower standards than most!

I came across this show and decided to give it a go; I had read the summary but was somewhat unsure of what to expect. I waited to write a review until I had watched the first two episodes. With two episodes in, all I can say is that I'm disappointed that this is airing on CBS; only because I believe CBS will fail the show as compared to the show failing CBS.

The humor in the show comes from, in my humble opinion, the fact that the invasion takes place in DC and the ridiculous nature of politics in DC overshadows the fact that an alien bugs have landed on the planet and are slowly taking over mankind. Everyone is oblivious to what is right in front of them.

The story centers on Laurel Healy and how she handles working on her brother's Senate staff after being bribed into the position by her father. The story may seem slow at times, but you really do become invested in the story and what is going on with the main characters.

Give it a try and at least watch the first two episodes before writing it off. Besides, Tony Shaloub is in it and plays a kooky character, that should be justification alone to watch it!
  • A comedy? A drama? Horror fiction? "BrainDead" is described as all three in IMDb, but I never referred to the website before watching the first three episodes. I expected a comedy, based upon television ads, so I watched episode one waiting for the moment when it diverged into that genre, but that moment never came. There were bizarre happenings that suggest a writer with a dark sense of humor, but the episode played like straight horror/drama, like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."

Still, I felt there was an undercurrent of something political. Would the show reveal itself to be left-leaning (like most everything from the west coast) or would it use Trump l'oeil to sway viewers to the right side? I watched episode two in anticipation.

Although the main character, Laurel Healy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), seems somewhat apolitical, she works for her brother, a Democratic senator, so much of the story originates from that point of view (and I think that's why some viewers think it espouses a left-of-center political viewpoint). But the barbs were evenly distributed on both sides of the aisle, I thought. I noticed that when Laurel didn't like the right-leaning political commentary on one channel, she switched to a left-leaning channel. This appears to be a more objective commentary that skewers the simplistic assertions of both extremes (and I use that term in a non-pejorative way).

So now I consider the show a mystery. What will it reveal itself to be? Will it remain a sci-fi/horror/centrist commentary about American politics and culture? I hope so.

The cast is excellent. I especially enjoy Ms. Winstead, who I had not seen before. She has an every"man" appeal and Laurel seems like someone you'd like to know. She is more than the token "person of conscience" in D.C. that the first episode painted. Tony Shaloub plays a meaty role as Red Wheatus, the colorful Republican opponent of Laurel's brother. Johnny Ray Gill plays Gustav Triplett, a quirky genius who struggles to understand the odd happenings around him.

Update 8/2/16: More than a handful of episodes in, this show has shown itself to be consistently interesting and adorable and intriguing--an unusual combination. I am raising my grade to "9".

Update 9/15/16: From the musical reminders of what happened in the previous episode to the way the show perfectly captures the BS that passes for activity in government to the insightful lampooning of PC-inspired nonsense, this show is forcing me to give it a "10" because it is one of the best in recent years. Besides, there's a nagging voice in my head compelling me to up my grade...and have a kelp shake.
  • Didn't look appealing by the book cover. Come on, bugs, bio gore and huh what, more politics in an election year?

Most faces aren't familiar (they did poach a few from the Good Wife and Mr.Monk). My kind of show are Persons of interest and Mr.Robot, my level of blood/gore, Preacher and True Blood. Am not a House of Card nor Walking Dead fan so exploding brains wasn't something I'd anticipate with glee...

But then it gets real exciting real fast. Endless curiosities...

Self-combustion heads when and where you least expect, retro cocktails in new cool bars with old fashion spies, actors who're just the right level of clever and cute and definitely know their character well. Soon I got dragged deeper and deeper by mystery bug language, and really creative use of modified smart phone bug tracker.

It's now my most favorite show...

I got sucked in by 2nd episode. By 3rd, I want this show to last 10 seasons.

The brand of humor is fresh, sarcastic, lethal, irreverent, and fun plus plus. The visual, art direction, and especially plotting craft, seamless and superb. Pure brainy entertainment!

Watch it yourself to find out...
  • Braindead bites the jugular as a science fiction satire of the US political vascular system in a way that leaves the viewer with a disturbing lust for blood. The mercilessly savage portrayal of the current chaotic culture which holds the world's number one power in its thrall is populated by finely chiseled deeply flawed characters who exude privilege, narcissism and cunning as they wrestle each other for every breath in the unannounced fight to the finish. And just when it couldn't get any worse, an alien insect invading force inveigles its way into the brains of the protagonists and they have their own agenda. It is unimaginable and yet it is real. The CGI intentionally positions us at a distance so that we knowingly suspend our disbelief and in this way we consume a product of that very culture we are watching and as we do so we know ourselves to be consumers. We are consuming ourselves. The message is clear. Braindead is the actual truth disguised as satirical allegory. The horror is here, dribbling down from your open mouth down your shirt front. Watch Out! Your brain isn't your friend.
  • Whether you love it or not this show had great acting and writing. i guess its ratings were low to warrant cancellation but the execs should have seen the potential. everyone i've recommended this to have loved it and had never heard of it when first mentioned. badly marketed i guess. political satire meets invasion of the body snatchers with an impressively great female lead and the funniest Michael Moore cameo you'll ever see!

    what more do you want?!

As a native of D.C. with family members who worked with and in Congress, this show is hilarious. I'm amazed by the number of reviewers that don't seem to grasp that this show is satirical with an extremely dark humor. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

Quick synopsis: alien bugs landed on Earth via a meteor that was brought to the Smithsonian literally hours before another government shutdown. The bugs then begin taking over the brains of humans, causing them to act drastically different and become unwilling to compromise. As more and more Senators, Congressmen, and staffers are taken over the strained relations between the two parties turn into a war. All the while only a handful of people are suspicious, but can't get any traction because of Congress' well- documented inability to function and the fact that D.C. is the place where dreams of making a difference come to die.

The complaints about it being partisan (pro-Democrat) are completely wrong--the Democratic members are just as self-centered, venal, and out of touch as the Republicans--as a evidenced in episodes 2 & 3, where the Democrats turn on each other, leaking stories to the press and even using constituents asking for help for publicity ("Shutdown Annie").

I particularly love the fact that the central plot line takes some of the sting out of the sad fact that our elected representatives would rather fight with each other than do their jobs. If you enjoy dark comedy with social commentary--plus a healthy dose of gore (exploding heads feature prominently)--then you'll definitely enjoy this wacky show.

I decided to give BrainDead a shot even though I did not expect to like it. When television shows try to blend genres I typically lose interest because it is rarely done well. BrainDead surprised me. I am four episodes in and have enjoyed each one. As you can see from the episode ratings, the show grows stronger each week. While the subject matter itself is silly there is the right amount of politics and humor to keep the show moving forward at a solid pace. The comedy is often dry, like they're not trying, I appreciate this and believe this type of humor is not utilized enough in today's television. I'd like to give a shout out to Johnny Ray Gill who plays Gustav Triplett. Most of the laugh out loud scenes originate with this guy, he is the most enjoyable part of BrainDead at this point.

It doesn't matter your political 'affiliation', if you don't find this funny, then, just wow! This show is an outright dig on politics in general, and just hilarious. I can't get enough of it

    Meh
When I first read the description I figured it could be a mix between House of Cards and The Walking Dead or at least The West Wing meets The Strain but after finishing the pilot I must say the "horror" tag is all but missing.

Tony Shalhoub,Danny Pino and Mary Winstead do a great job to get you interested in watching the next episode(s) but the writing is not very original and the dialog barely got a few smirks on my face.

It did however spark my sci-fi interest and I'm willing to give this show a try just because of the writers and the cast. Either the political aspect is just a vehicle to get the sci-fi story told or the sci-fi part is a way to get some political satire in but the jury is still out.

So far I haven't seen any proof of it being biased to any side of the spectrum and I hope they'll keep it that way. If you are interested in some light entertainment, what easily could be called "The Men in Black go to Washington", then this pilot is something you should really check out.

This show was better than 99 percent the CBS lineup so of course it had to be canceled. I guess I can take solace in the fact that brilliant shows like "Man With A Plan" will probably be renewed for a fourth season. And we wonder why no one watches network TV anymore.
  • OK so I read the summery and it made me think of an old sci-fi where space worms had taken over the minds of London's political party.... I think it might have been a Doctor Who episode but anyway it was a silly episode and not that creative... that's how the summery read too, silly, not very creative and trying to cast a house of cards vibe on the whole thing in hopes of luring fans of that as well as sci-fi fans.

Well the pilot didn't disappoint, the writing is borderline and not very memorable sadly, a moment of silence for all those wasted opportunities please!

They deal with the sci-fi silliness well though, there is no horror here even though there is some gore it's handled in an iZombie fashion.

Silly fun and not too serious even though the whole house of cards vibe is still there.

I'd say wait a bit, if they lower the class a bit and upped the silliness it would be a lot more interesting but as is it feels like two shows competing for the same air time.

I was so looking forward to seeing the return of Tony Shalhoub and did find Mary Winstead refreshing. I am sorry they didn't attach themselves to a vehicle that wasn't so vacant and unimaginative.

The best humor is always based on some form of reality, or at least on something conceivable. Ants surviving a 2800 degree meteor is just too silly and Jerry Louis level wacky for me. They may as well have parted the Atlantic and had the bugs crawl out from under it. Or, had ancient carpenter ants awaken from inside the pyramids and fly the Atlantic first class in DC-9's with 13 Scientologists.

The list of silly is endless... I am sure there will be many redeeming factors in time, just very sorry the beginning premise did not hook me, left me empty and for the most part un-entertained.

Had 'Monk' been based on space bugs I would have felt the same way. Nor would I still be enjoying the complete collection to this day. Hopefully this show will fade soon and Tony Shalhoub can return to something worthy of his unique and wonderful excellence.
  • Does anyone else feel an eerie simiularity of this storyline to whats going on today in 2020? Have the alien bugs really invaded earth? Asking for a friend. :)
  • I decided to check out this new show and I have to admit, it's pretty funny.

Disclaimer: I'm not a member of either of the major parties - I ditched my "life-time club membership" right after voting in the primaries. LOL Gotta wake up sometime, right?

To me, they're both varying degrees of terrible. Which might explain why I dig this show. It takes potshots at both sides.

It's obviously both satire and fiction but with current real-life elections underway, I can see where this might rub some people the wrong way.

At this early stage I don't see any agenda and there might just not be one, or it might hint at the fact that the 2-Party system simply isn't working in a country that claims to value personal freedoms and democracy.

I say enjoy it for what it is. :)

Yes, it's liberals trying to be "fair and balanced", yes, it's all over the place, yes, it starts with a bang and ends with a whimper. But was this conservative viewer entertained? You bet! Stellar cast. Shaloub was great, but what is that accent? And, man, was he annoying! Mary Elizabeth is always amazing. New to me, Johnny Day Gill, is so funny, he sweats comedy. Just looking at him brings a smile. I'll be looking for his future work. This whole production, from writing to editing and filmography, was refreshingly bold and daring. They took on massive challenges and bit into many issues (superficially), tried their best, but by the end it all just collapsed from so much weight. Copious kudos for trying!

It's a crying shame this got cancelled before I even discovered it on Amazon Prime, but maybe that makes it more special. It certainly works fine as a single series. I do miss those episode recaps though...
  • I watch tons of movies and series, much too much honestly, but I have time enough and I love it so I'm not going to feel guilty about it. So I saw a lot of bad series, or series that I knew from the first episode on that it wouldn't be good. But with BrainDead I knew instantly that this was going to be great. Not very well known by the public, and that's a shame, because it's one of the best series I've seen in the last years. When you see that some series go on and on forever while they should just cancel them, and then you see a quality show like this one that probably will end after one season you know it's a shame. BrainDead has everything to be loved, a great script, a sense of humor that will make the most depressing people smile, a mild bit of horror, and a great cast. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a candy for the eye, but she's also funny and a good actress. Tony "Monk" Shalhoub is to me the funniest character of this show. I couldn't get enough of him and Johnny Ray Gill. The whole cast contributes to make this series a must-see. I really hope one day millions of people will discover this show and that the producers will have no other option than to continue with other seasons. I absolutly loved it.

    10/10
    Nine!!
I'm only giving this nine stars as it is CLEARLY a DOCUMENTARY and is in the wrong entertainment category.
  • dehughes5831 March 2017
Brilliant. Just brilliant. So sorry it wasn't picked up for a second season. It just goes to show how, when it comes to TV series, timing can be everything. I imagine that one of the knocks against it was that its premise was too outlandish. However, given what's going on in Washington at present, that accusation would no longer hold water. In fact, if a series like this were pitched today, it would probably be dismissed as being too on the nose.
  • connta14 June 2018
Dunno why it didnt get renewed, the cast had chemistry and the plot was half decent, it didnt take itself too seriously and it was funny
  • Watching the trailers for that show I thought it was going to be absolutely horrible, but I ended up watching the first episode anyway, because I personally watch a lot of political TV shows (even bad ones.) It was good timing on the networks part: year long shows are on break, spring shows just ended and most other summer shows didn't start when this show first aired. I was quite surprised at how good it was. It has a mix of a lot of different categories: political thriller, comedy, romance, and sci-fi. The intro is pretty funny and original too. Everybody calling this show mediocre or bad have to remember this is summer broadcast networks usually air absolute garbage and reality television during the summer. Which is why I'm giving this show a 9/10. I probably wouldn't give this show that score if it was on cable or premium cable or aired during the fall to spring time slot.
  • It's an interesting enough premise, but after watching the pilot I find myself thinking this would make a much better 1 shot (movie) than a series... I can't imagine how this could sustain a series.

It's full of some interesting performances, and I'm a fan of the King's production work, so I figured I'd give their new show a chance (RIP The Good Wife) - but here their last big political project had some major longevity and and obvious trajectory for development, it's very difficult to see how you could sustain anything resembling dramatic (or comedic) tension over an extended period of time.

This show has also made me hate The Cars.

Also, it's not remotely a horror show, it's akin to iZombie, not The Walking Dead.
  • This could have been a fun and interesting show but the incessant republican bashing is both distracting and annoying. Washington and it's politics are consistently skewed to the left in TV, news and print media. It would have been a refreshing change to have concentrated on the story line and left the liberal bias out of the story I won't be watching any more episodes because of this. I really don't understand why the writers, producers and actors felt that they needed to try to brainwash viewers instead of simply creating and producing an interesting commentary on the wasteful idiotic practices that have ruined our country and economy while our elected representatives run amok wasting money and lining their retirement nests at our expense.
