A24’s “The Zone of Interest” is spoken in German, but was filmed in Poland and is written and directed by a British auteur. So what does that mean for its prospects for best international feature at the Oscars?
Written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, “The Zone of Interest” premiered last week at the Cannes Film Festival where it emerged as an early favorite for the coveted Palme d’Or after receiving widespread acclaim.
The film tells the story of a commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp that was one of the sites where six million Jews were murdered.
In the past few years, it seems as if more non-English language features are being submitted that aren’t spoken in the country’s native tongue.

Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry are teaming up for a new film, which will see both legendary stars face off as spies. Warner Bros. confirmed to Popsugar that they have landed the new project, titled "Maude v Maude." Deadline was the first to report news of the exciting movie.

Angelina Jolie took her first stab at directing a feature film nearly two decades after starring in them. The revered actress wrote, produced, and directed the 2011 film "In the Land of Blood and Honey," a war-torn romance drama between a Serbian camp administrator and his Bosnian prisoner, against the backdrop of the Bosnian war of 1992. Here's a synopsis for the film:
Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, and Ajla, a Bosnian held captive in the camp he oversees, knew each other before the war, and could have found love with each other. But as the armed conflict takes hold of their lives, their relationship grows darker, their motives and connection to one another ambiguous, their allegiances uncertain.
Although the film opened to mixed reviews, Jolie was commended for her sensitive approach toward the story, and for being successful in depicting the atrocities of the war. The subject matter is extremely heavy,...

Angelina Jolie's newest movie involves two familiar faces behind the scenes: her sons Maddox and Pax! Jolie told People on Aug. 17 that when it came time to shoot her movie "Without Blood" in Italy, it was a no-brainer to include Maddox, 21, and Pax, 18, in the crew.
"We work well together. When a film crew is at its best, it feels like a big family, so it felt natural," she told the outlet. Maddox and Pax both worked in the movie's assistant director department. Pax previously worked with his mom on 2017's "First They Killed My Father" and shot stills for that movie. Reincarnation, artificial consciousness and augmented reality intersect in U.S. director Jake Wachtel’s Cambodia-set “Karmalink,” for which Variety can reveal the first trailer.
The sci-fi mystery will have its world premiere as the opening film of the Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week on Sept. 1.
Set in a near-future Phnom Penh, “Karmalink” is about a 13-year-old boy and his street-smart female friend who team up to search for a gold statue from the boy’s past lives, while traveling across town and also back in time.
But what begins as a hunt for a Buddhist treasure soon leads to greater discoveries in the digital realm that could be either enlightening or obliterating.
Wachtel, who grew up in Palo Alto, started developing the film in 2015, while teaching filmmaking in Phnom Penh. He cast two former students as his leads and shot the film on location after living in their community for several years.

A man of formidable ego, Samuel Goldwyn once confided that, while he’d basically invented Hollywood, he disliked the word “movie.” It sounded “dopey and made-up,” he told me.
I wonder what he would think about the word “streamer.” Dictionaries still describe “streamer” as a strip of material, but the word defines Hollywood today, just as “movie” once did. It’s a streamer town, and it’s now Steven Spielberg who’s been positioned to help drive the action.
Last week when Netflix revealed its new mega-deal with Spielberg, the town’s dealmakers (including rivals) agreed it was a “natural.” The filmmaker who gave us Schindler’s List and Jaws would help fulfill Netflix’s voracious appetite for content. Any content. After all, Spielberg had done it all before – that is, before streamers even happened.

Strand Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Oscar-nominated Cambodian director Rithy Panh’s “Irradiated,” which world premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and won best documentary. The film is represented in international markets by Playtime.
Through “Irradiated,” Panh sheds light on the human horrors perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge regime which he experienced during his childhood. Narrated by Rebecca Marder and André Wilms (“Le Havre”), the film brings together black-and-white archival war footage across a tryptic of panels juxtaposing images of war and suffering across the 20th century and around the world. The cinematic documentary is scored by Panh’s longtime collaborator Marc Marder.
“What it means to be a survivor cannot be put into words. To live on, to make contact with this irradiation, for which there may be no cause, no knowledge, but from which there is no protection,” said Panh about his film. “Evil radiates.

Ellen Mirojnick had worked with Angelina Jolie twice (on 2016’s “By the Sea” and 2018’s “First They Killed My Father”) before being hired to design the costumes for “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” It was this familiarity that made her job easier. “You have a shorthand and trust – that’s really important. If you have that trust going in, no matter how different or difficult the project is, you are one step ahead of the game.”
Mirojnick had done the costumes for the 1998 television version of “Cinderella,” another adaptation of a Charles Perrault classic. She reaped an Emmy bid for that. Angelina Jolie has signed with WME after spending most of the past decade with UTA.
Jolie is coming off the Disney sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” which is close to grossing $500 million worldwide. In recent years, the woman who is one of the world’s most recognizable movie stars has focused more on directing and producing than acting. As of late that has changed as Jolie has lined up a number of prominent acting jobs including the lead role in Marvel’s “Eternals,” set for release next year.
Jolie came to UTA as a director client in 2011 while being repped by IFA for acting. As of 2013, she was repped on all front by UTA. Before coming to UTA, she had been without agency representation after parting ways with CAA in 2006.
During her time with UTA, the agency negotiated Jolie’s first deal to direct a studio picture with 2014’s “Unbroken,...

Angelina Jolie is back again this week with blood in her eye, evil in her heart and horns on her head to reprise her aggressively colorful portrayal of the title character in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” So we thought it might be a good time to look back at some highlights — and lowlights — of her movie career — as a performer, that is.
Coming up next, the Oscar winner has Peter Pan prequel “Come Away,” the Taylor Sheridan-directed drama “Those Who Wish Me Dead” and Marvel’s “Eternals,” in which she plays Thena.
Jolie has also delved into directing in the last decade, helming “In the Land of Blood and Honey” in 2011, “Unbroken” in 2014, “By the Sea” in 2015 and “First They Killed My Father” in 2017.
Jolie has also focused much of her time on humanitarian causes, completing dozens of field missions and traveling to war zones to meet with U.

Angelina Jolie celebrated son Maddox's 18th birthday with a trip to Cleveland on Aug. 5. During the visit, Angelina - who recently penned a powerful essay in Elle's September issue - modeled a light brown dress while Maddox sported a t-shirt and baseball cap. The duo joined longtime friend Loung Ung - the author of First They Killed My Father, which inspired Angelina's 2017 film adaption - for a meal while visiting the city.
In a Facebook post, Loung shared details about about her union with Angelina, 44, and Maddox, writing, "We started with lunch at Market Garden Brewpub and a visit to Ohio City Farm/The Refugee Response Program and Cleveland Museum of Art! I met Maddox when he was just a year old and today he turns eighteen and going off to college! So proud! Happy Birthday, Maddox!" ‘Wandering Souls’
Director-producer Aviva Ziegler’s feature documentary Wandering Souls will screen on Sbs and at Australian and international film festivals following the world premiere last week at the Cambodia International Film Festival.
The film follows the mounting of a stage production, Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia, which premiered in Melbourne in 2017. The work was created in memory of the two million Cambodians who died at the hands of Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge.
Wandering Souls also tells first-hand survival stories of those involved in the creation of the play and of the determination of Cambodians to reclaim an artistic heritage that disappeared during the four years of the reign of terror. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the regime’s overthrow.
Commissioned by the not-for-profit organization Cambodian Living Arts, the play was a first-time collaboration between Cambodian film director Rithy Panh and the country’s premier composer, Dr.

Cambodian master director Rithy Panh’s is not optimistic about the chances of his latest film “Graves Without A Name” doing well at the Oscars. It is Cambodia’s contender in the foreign language category.
“There is very little possibility. We have had screenings here and there, but the Oscar campaign costs more than my film. Most of the voters are from the U.S. and we don’t have the financial support to screen on the East coast and the West coast, and give people cocktails,” said Panh.
Panh has been a tireless cinematic chronicler of the genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s. His 2013 film “The Missing Picture” scored an Oscar nomination. “First They Killed My Father,” produced by Panh and directed by Angelina Jolie, was Cambodia’s entry to the Oscars last year, but did not secure a nomination.

The Golden Globes have once again shut out female directors in three major categories, including Best Director and both Best Motion Picture categories. It’s par for the course for the annual event, which has only ever nominated five women for Best Director in its 90-year history, with only Barbra Streisand (a two-time nominee) going home with a win for her “Yentl.” Last year, Greta Gerwig’s lauded “Lady Bird” won the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy statuette, but the first-time filmmaker was not nominated for her directing and her film was the only one directed by a woman to earn a nod in those three major categories.
The only female director to earn a major nod was “Capernaum” filmmaker Nadine Labaki in the Best Foreign-Language Film category. Last year, Angelina Jolie was the sole female director to earn a Best Foreign-Language Film nod for her “First They Killed My Father.

Not content with being an Oscar-winning actress, a celebrated humanitarian, and an honorary dame, Angelina Jolie is taking on the role of radio editor this festive season. She will join BBC's festive schedule as a guest editor of Radio 4's Today, as part of a group of special guests who'll be taking the reins of the news and current affairs show between Christmas and New Year.
Angelina's episode will air in the UK on Dec. 28, and focus on subjects relating to her work as a special envoy to the Un Refugee Agency. The BBC reports that she will invite a number of guests to "discuss the global refugee crisis and solutions to violence against women in war zones."

How does one depict a genocide such as that inflicted by the Khmer Rouge on the Cambodian people? Some — such as Rithy Pahn, who used clay figures rather than actors for the reenactments in his Oscar-nominated documentary “The Missing Piece” — would argue that to do so is to empower the perpetrators, to exploit the victims, and potentially to reduce the atrocities to a form of spectacle. And yet, the world must not be allowed to forget. By embracing hand-drawn animation as a tool for tactful re-creation, “Funan” director Denis Do provides audiences a unique window into this relatively under-represented 20th-century horror, one that serves as an act of witnessing even as it avoids directly showing the violence on-screen.
Do’s restraint is an artistic choice, not one forced upon him by censors or producers concerned about reaching the widest audience possible. Even by cutting away from the worst incidents — which include beatings,...

Los Angeles-set productions ‘total lottery system’, agent says.
European soft money is often a first port of call as opposed to Us incentives because it is easier to access, leading agents revealed in a Zurich Summit session called Behind The Powerful Agency Curtain this weekend.
The agents emphasised the continuing reliance on soft money in packaging and financing films for their clients. Subsidies and tax breaks are easier to access in Europe than in the Us, and that, they said, is why so much attention is paid to Europe and there is now often a reluctance to shoot in Hollywood itself.

Angelina Jolie is getting back in front of the camera in a big way. The multi-hyphenate has not starred in a live-action film since her own 2015 effort “By the Sea,” opting to spend much of 2016 and 2017 working on her directorial effort “First They Killed My Father,” but as she wraps up work on “Maleficent 2” and gets started in the David Oyelowo-starring “Come Away,” Jolie is already locking in another meaty starring role. Variety reports that the Oscar winner is set to star in a big screen adaptation of James Scott’s 2014 novel “The Kept.” Jolie is also on deck to produce the film.
Per Variety, “the story is set in the winter of 1897, and follows a trio of killers that descends upon an isolated farm in upstate New York. Midwife Elspeth Howell returns home to the carnage: her husband and four of her children, murdered. Before she can discover her remaining son Caleb,...

The Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film now has a clear frontrunner, because Mexico has submitted Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” in the category.
Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and one of the most acclaimed films of the fall festival circuit, “Roma” is a beautiful black-and-white film based on moments from Cuaron’s childhood, growing up in a suburb of Mexico City. The Netflix release is also a strong Best Picture contender, the only one of the 40-plus foreign-language entries to be in the running for both awards.
At this point, for it not to land a foreign-language nomination would be astonishing, though Netflix failed to make the cut last year in the category even though it had by far the highest-profile submission, Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father.”

Exclusive: Netflix giving their awards season features a qualifying theatrical release isn’t new; the streaming service has practiced this annually going back to 2015’s Beasts of No Nation.
This year the streaming service will be giving awards qualifying runs to the following titles, and Deadline has learned exclusively from reliable sources that these movies will reportedly open on the following dates: Paul Greengrass’ Norway political thriller 22 July on Oct. 10, the Coen Brothers’ western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Nov. 16 and Alfonso Cuaron’s black and white epic Roma on Dec. 14. Release dates being release dates, they can always change, but this is what we’re hearing at this time.
We’re also hearing that each of these runs will be in 10-12 theaters in big city locations, and will play largely at the Landmark, which has historically been the case for Netflix movies. Why? Because Academy voters in...

The Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section, modeled on Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, has unveiled its lineup of 11 competition entries, all world premieres, marked by a particularly strong presence of female directors.
The section will open with “Graves Without a Name” (pictured), a new documentary on the horrors of the Khmer Rouge era by revered Cambodian-born director Rithy Panh, producer of Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father.” The lineup mixes promising entries from both well-known auteurs and newcomers. The out-of competition closer is suicide-themed comedy “Emma Peeters” from young Belgian director Nicole Palo.
Venice Days artistic director Giorgio Gosetti noted that six out of 12 titles in the official selection are directed by women and said that “female characters play a crucial role in all the films.” But he also said his choice was unconstrained by gender considerations. “We sought the best that we could find and...

Landmark Theatres, a high-end chain known for its art-house offerings, has been quietly on the market for some time. But this week, two would-be buyers emerged as potential suitors: Netflix and Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios.
The names of both companies floated in the press illustrates the seismic changes happening in the movie industry. At a time when ticket sales are on the decline, owning a theater doesn’t have the same profitability margins it once had. But there are other perks that could appeal to unconventional owners.
Netflix, which has been flirting with getting into the theatrical exhibition space as a way to qualify its films for awards consideration and to serve as a kind of test-kitchen for corporate experimentation, looked at the chain. However, it’s not interested in the company, according to sources. (Netflix declined to comment.)

Ted Sarandos says Netflix won’t be going to Cannes this year.
In an exclusive interview with Variety, Netflix’s chief content officer says that the festival sent a clear message with a new rule that bans any films without theatrical distribution in France from playing in competition. Netflix could screen some of its upcoming movies out of competition, but Sarandos says that doesn’t make sense for the streaming service.
“We want our films to be on fair ground with every other filmmaker,” Sarandos says. “There’s a risk in us going in this way and having our films and filmmakers treated disrespectfully at the festival. They’ve set the tone. I don’t think it would be good for us to be there.”
Netflix made a big splash at the prestigious film festival last year with two movies that showed in competition: Bong Joon-ho’s “Okja” and Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories.

Hip-hop biopics are a Hollywood mainstay. But until now, the subgenre has largely favored male rappers (N.W.A., Tupac, Biggie, Eminem) and it’s been rare to find a movie that successfully cements the legacy of a female artist. Sundance hit “Roxanne Roxanne” changes that, bringing to life the story of ‘80s sensation Lolita Shante Gooden, better known as Roxanne Shante, hip-hop’s first commercially successful female artist.
Available to stream now on Netflix, the biopic offers an authentic portrayal of the talented Queens-bred teen’s unlikely rise to stardom and the inevitable hurdles she’s forced to overcome along the way. Featuring an acclaimed lead performance by newcomer Chanté Adams (who was awarded 2017 Sundance Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Dramatic Performance), the film details Shante’s time living in the projects with her mom and three sisters and the life-changing invite she received from a neighbor to freestyle on one of his tracks.

On opening night of Sundance 2018, writer-director Tamara Jenkins premiered her new film “Private Life” to rave reviews. The New York drama was headed for derailment when she submitted it to Netflix Indie Content directors of content Ian Bricke and his lieutenant Matt Levin; they loved her script about an infertile middle-aged couple (Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn) desperately trying to have a child by any means necessary. Angelina Jolie was a vision in white when she popped up at the Critics' Choice Awards in Santa Monica, CA, on Thursday. The actress stunned in a strappy white feathered dress and had a special date: Loung Ung, the human rights activist who is the subject of her film First They Killed My Father. The ladies appeared to have a blast on the red carpet as they shared a few laughs, held hands, and even showed off their back tattoos for the cameras. It was a big night for both Angelina and Loung, as First They Killed My Father was nominated for best foreign language film. Unfortunately, the movie didn't win, but Angelina did share a handful of adorable moments inside with 7-year-old Brookylnn Prince.
