In 2002, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.
The lead character is named Christine after director Greta Gerwig's mother, Christine Gerwig. In addition, the mother in the film, Marion (played by Laurie Metcalf), is a nurse, just as Christine is in real life.
Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson:
Do you think I look like I'm from Sacramento?
Marion McPherson:
You are from Sacramento.
Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson:
You don't have to do that.
Marion McPherson:
Well it's nice to make things neat and clean. You ready to go home?
Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson:
Ready.
When Lady Bird's flight is taking off, the new Terminal B at Sacramento International Airport can be seen in the background. That terminal opened in 2011; the scene takes place in 2003.
SHOWN AT THE BEGINNING: "Anybody who talks about California hedonism has never spent a Christmas in Sacramento." -Joan Didion
