As the residents of Deadwood gather to commemorate Dakota's statehood in 1889, saloon owner Al Swearengen and Marshal Seth Bullock clash with Senator George Hearst.
The top hat worn by Joanie Stubbs (Kim Dickens) is the same gray top hat she wore in the original series, but it was refashioned with brown fabric to make it look new (a common practice in the 19th century). The costume designer could not find a new hat that fit her as well, and Dickens had kept the original hat all these years.
All bleeding stops eventually.
The marching band plays John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" at the South Dakota Statehood ceremony, which takes place in 1889. The song wasn't written until 1896.
