Everybody Knows" is only the second Spanish-language film to open Cannes, following Pedro Almodovar's "Bad Education" in 2004. It is also one of the few openers in Cannes history which is not in either English or French.
Farhadi delayed the production of "Everybody knows" to return to Iran and shoot "The Salesman".
Asghar Farhadi's second film to be shot outside of Iran, first being the Palme d'Or and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language nominee The Past (2013).
This marks the fifth collaboration between real life partners Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem after "Jamón, jamón" (1992), "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008), "The counselor" (2013) and "Loving Pablo" (2017).
The film is the third collaboration between Farhadi and producer Mallet-Guy after "The Salesman" and "The Past," which Memento Films produced and distributed in France.
