Adele paid tribute to Matthew Perry during her Las Vegas show Saturday, hours after the death of the Friends star was revealed.
While the singer never met the actor, Adele — like millions of Friends fans — felt a connection to the hit sitcom, and especially Perry’s character Chandler Bing, who she called “probably the best comedic character of all time.”

Actor Matthew Perry, who is best known for essaying the role of the sarcastic and wise-cracking Chandler Bing, had almost missed out on getting the gig. Perry, who died at the age of 54, recalled during a 2015 appearance on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’ how he almost lost his shot at starring in the sit-com. Perry recalled becoming desperate for work in 1994 after his “terrible” manager told him he had “no money.”
“This happened to be the year that ‘Friends’ was shot, but I was off the market because I had taken a job on a pilot called ‘Lax 2194’ that was about baggage handlers at L.A. Airport in the year 2194,” he explained.
Detailing that one incident, he added: “So I was wearing a futuristic shirt, and little people played the aliens in which I had to sort out the aliens’ luggage and that was basically the show.”

Lou Diamond Phillips, who played real-life Wild West Regulator Jose Chavez y Chavez in both Young Guns and Young Guns II, has hinted that Young Guns 3 could still very well hop back on the saddle at some point.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Phillips said Young Guns 3 isn’t entirely off the table, although talk has certainly slowed down. “It’s in limbo right now…It was chugging along there for a minute, but then I think they got into a rights situation…It’s not dead, but it’s not happening right now.” While the movies certainly have a following, that more than 30 years has passed since Young Guns II might be an indication that fan interest may have aged out. After all, many people might only remember the second one for Jon Bon Jovi’s “Blaze of Glory”, which won a Golden Globe and could have lassoed...

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

To hear Damien Chazelle tell the story of how he ended up casting Diego Calva as the lead of his new film “Babylon,” it almost sounds like a scene cut out of “Babylon.” “I saw a headshot randomly and I was just like, ‘Oh, that’s the face of a dreamer,’” Chazelle told GQ about finding Calva. “‘Those eyes have real poetry in them. Who is this guy? Has he ever acted before?’”
As it turned out, Calva had acted for years in his native Mexico and appeared on the Netflix series “Narcos: Mexico.” But “Babylon” was at an entirely different scale than what came before – a lavish Hollywood production set in the 1920s and 1930s where the actor shares scenes with Oscar winner Brad Pitt and two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie.

Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired director James Cullen Bressack’s well-received horror-comedy, “Murder, Anyone?” based on the play of the same name by Bressack’s father, Emmy-award winner Gordon Bressack.
The film will be released in early 2023.
“Murder, Anyone?” explores the concept of manifestation, and stars Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”), Galadriel Stineman (“The Middle”), Maurice Lamarche (“Pinky and the Brain”), Spencer Breslin, and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland.
The story follows playwrights George and Charlie, tasked with the challenge of creating the next “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller.” Unfortunately, as they write, the story comes to life in real time — but their own emotions and arguments also begin to manifest on film, creating sharp twists and turns and filling their life with hilarity — and chaos.

We all love pop music, don’t we? Six years since the premiere of “The Magnificent Seven” and lead star Ethan Hawke is still pushing for the five-hour cut to be released.
The #ReleasetheFuquaCut campaign can only get so far, though, as Hawke revealed he’s been begging director Antoine Fuqua for over half a decade.
“In some ways, I see all his films [as] a collective scream against authority,” Hawke told The Hollywood Reporter of his collaborations with Fuqua. “[It’s] 107 [degrees] in Louisiana and there were more studio execs than our 100-person cast. He just put his head down and made his movie. I still beg him to release the five-hour cut of that film.”
The 2016 film was a remake of the John Sturges classic inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai.” Fuqua’s updated Western starred Hawke, Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Peter Sarsgaard, and Haley Bennett.

Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has announced the 29 projects selected for this year’s Asian Project Market (Apm), a core strand of the festival’s industry activities, including new works from Thailand’s Aditya Assarat, China’s Wang Qi, Vietnam’s Le Bao and Myanmar’s Maung Sun, whose producer Ma Aeint is currently in prison in Yangon.

Though the breakup of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero — and the end of their Showtime late night series and Bodega Boys podcast — seemingly came out of nowhere, one-half of the duo says it had been in the works for some time.
Mero said in a podcast interview that he and Desus had been “pursuing separate interests” for a year before the July 18 announcement that Desus & Mero was finished at Showtime, leading to heavy speculation about what drove the split.
“Desus and I had a discussion, and we had been pursuing separate interests for over a year before the show came to an end,” Mero (aka Joel Martinez), said on the Basic! podcast hosted by former Comedy Central and MTV executive Doug Herzog and Vulture TV critic Jen Chaney. “That conversation solidified for us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to [break out] independent of one another.

Joel Martinez, best known as The Kid Mero, appeared on SiriusXM’s “Basic!” podcast and broke his silence on ending his longtime partnership with Desus Nice (real name Daniel Baker). The two gained popularity with their “Bodega Boys” podcast, which launched in 2015, and then became late-night staples with their Showtime series “Desus & Mero.” Fans were shocked when the network announced last month that “Desus & Mero” was abruptly ending after four seasons.
“Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another,” Mero said on the podcast. “As far back as June of last year we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals.”

Desus and Mero shocked the comedy world this week when they abruptly announced that they would no longer be working together on any creative projects. Many casual viewers of their Showtime series felt blindsided by the news, though diehard fans of the duo had suspected something was up due to passive aggressive social media activity.
But a new report from Puck gives the clearest explanation yet for why the two comedians decided to end their hit show and podcasting empire. According to five sources, the rift between Desus Nice and The Kid Mero stemmed from an argument about their longtime manager Victor Lopez.
Lopez had backed their career from the start, and was also credited as a producer on their Showtime series. But the cable network allegedly requested that Lopez stop working on the show due to accusations that he behaved abusively toward employees. According to the report, Desus agreed...

The short is titled “El Paso 11:55.” Brendan Fehr stars in the film along with Jardine, Cerrone, and Tait Fletcher. In addition to directing and starring, Jardine also serves as writer. It is set to screen at the LA Shorts International Film Festival on July 26 as part of Program 28.
“I’m humbled by all the heat that’s been surrounding this short,” Jardine said. “Being selected by this prestigious festival is a great affirmation for all the hard work I’ve put in transitioning from professional fighter to actor, and now writer/director. Especially now, as we are preparing to turn ‘El Paso’ into a full-length feature.”
In the film, a man is tasked with picking up a dangerous package for the mob, attracting the attention of every hitman in Albuquerque.

Rarely does one hear these words, but the bodega is closed.
The podcasting and cable talk show hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero sent millennials into a tailspin on Monday, announcing that their longtime partnership had come to an end. “[This] feels like the Beatles-splitting-up of my generation,” one wrote.
Showtime issued a statement that read “Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will be pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward,” when it announced that there would be no fifth season of their provocative late-night chat show, “Desus & Mero.” The final episode aired in late June.
Showtime’s series began in February 2019 and was the third series co-hosted by the pair after one with the same name on Viceland from late 2016 to mid-2018, and “Desus vs. Mero” which ran from 2013 to 2014 on ComplexTV. The two Bronx-born hosts also had a podcast, “The Bodega Boys,” which is, we now know, not coming back from its hiatus.

L.Q. Jones, the colorful character actor who worked on dozens of Westerns, including the Sam Peckinpah classics The Wild Bunch and Ride the High Country as a member of the famed filmmaker’s regular posse, has died. He was 94.
Jones died Saturday of natural causes at his home in the Hollywood Hills, his grandson Erté deGarces told The Hollywood Reporter.
Jones portrayed ranch hand Andy Belden on 25 episodes of NBC’s The Virginian over an eight-year span, was one of the bad guys who slipped a noose over Clint Eastwood’s neck in Hang ‘Em High (1968) and played a sheriff on the 1983-84 NBC primetime soap The Yellow Rose, starring Sam Elliott, Cybill Shepherd and Chuck Connors.

Ethan Hawke is getting back on the horse for a Western period piece.
After leading historical drama series “The Good Lord Bird,” Hawke is saddling up to play a cowboy once more, this time for Pedro Almodóvar’s “answer to ‘Brokeback Mountain,'” co-starring Pedro Pascal as Hawke’s love interest in “Strange Way of Life.”
Hawke shared a photo from pre-production atop a horse alongside director Almodóvar. “Giddy up,” Hawke captioned.
The 30-minute short movie starts filming in late August, taking place in Spain’s Almería desert region where Sergio Leone famously filmed Spaghetti Western “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”
Hawke stars as Jake, a local sheriff who is tasked with capturing gunslinger Silva, played by Pascal. The duo haven’t seen each other in 25 years “so one of them travels through the desert to find the other,” Almodóvar exclusively told IndieWire’s Eric Kohn. “There will be a showdown between them,...

Downtown Los Angeles is a very different place than it was when the Los Angeles Conservancy kicked off its “Last Remaining Seats” film screenings in movie palaces 35 years ago. When the annual series hits key theaters this month (after taking the last couple of Junes off for the pandemic), there will be far less trepidation in the air about the fate of some of the key theaters and the neighborhoods they’re in than there was back in 1987. One thing that’s very different, now versus then: the number of filmgoers who’ll be walking to the Orpheum and the Los Angeles, the two theaters that will host five of the six screenings.
Meanwhile, perhaps ironically, the Lrs series kicks off Saturday with a field trip to a neighborhood that was seen as deeply thriving 35 years ago, but could use its own boost now: Westwood, where the venerable 1931 Village Theater...

Mero then joined in on the delightful trolling, adding, "Keep doing it!...

So many changes, so little time. Not one, not two, not three, but four celebrities decided to use the 2022 Grammys as the time to debut their bold new 'dos. While E!'s Live From the Red Carpet host Laverne Cox and Best New Artist nominee The Kid Laroi brightened up the red carpet by dyeing their hair purple, J Balvin added an unexpected design on the back of his newly-blue head and Dua Lipa decided to see if blondes really do have more fun. We're, of course, referring to her Best New Artist win, which she nabbed for her debut album Sour. Rodrigo was definitely a frontrunner in this category, as Sour had three smash singles in the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart before its May 2021 release and broke a Spotify streaming record. For at least one evening, worlds are colliding in late-night TV.
Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel decided to switch up their hosting duties on April 1, with Kimmel traveling to New York to lead NBC’s “Tonight Show” and Fallon journeying to California to host ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” The studio audiences attending each broadcast were not informed of the move ahead of time, leaving them just as surprised as the TV viewers who tuned in Friday night. The Red Hot Chili Peppers served as musical guests for both programs.
While such stunts are rare — each late-night program vies with the others for viewership and social-media activity — they are becoming less unique. In 2018, Fallon and Stephen Colbert used the same opening segment on “Tonight” and CBS’ “The Late Show,” which depicted the duo and Conan O’Brien poking fun at former President Donald Trump and some of the terms he used for various late-night hosts.

Joaquin Phoenix and Woody Norman’s heart-warming turn as uncle and nephew on a transformative road trip joins classics of the genre from The Kid to Kolya

You may not know his films but you will certainly know who Charlie Chaplin is…
A legend of the silent film era there is more to the man than his signature bowler hat and cane. With films such as The Great Dictator, City Lights & The Kid his impact on film cannot be overstated.
The life of Charlie Chaplin is the subject of a new documentary from directing duo, James Spinney and Peter Middleton, who explore the enigma that is Chaplin.
We sit down with James and Peter to discuss The Real Charlie Chaplin, reflect on his influence, the mammoth task of tackling the story of a legend and controversy in his personal life.

It’s been over a century since Charlie Chaplin introduced his beloved Tramp character in 1914’s “Kid Auto Races at Venice.” Unlike a lot of the silent film performers of the time, Chaplin breaks the fourth wall and makes eye contact with the audience. And even a century later, there’s an immediacy to that eye contact, there’s a bond between you and the silent clown. “He’s this very fluid character who just communes with the audience,” said James Spinney, who, with Peter Middleton, directed the lauded new Showtime documentary “The Real Chaplin.”
“When you watch him, you feel this crackle as he looks at you,” Spinney noted during a recent Film Independent conversation. “It’s kind of flirtatious and mischievous when he does that. Charlie Chaplin in costume as his Little Tramp character. Courtesy of Showtime.
Charlie Chaplin was the first worldwide superstar, thanks in part to the global nature of silent movies, which transcended language barriers and international borders. Charlie Chaplin was funny and clever but on screen he also generated a hypnotic magic, seeming to reach through the screen to interact directly with the viewers, an effect your can still feel today watching his films. But his charming, hilarious Little Tramp was a character, not the real Charlie Chaplin, the first thing we learn in The Real Charlie Chaplin, a new biographical documentary that looks at both the man behind the magic and his creation.

Asghar Farhadi, the Iranian filmmaker with two Best International Film Oscars to his name, has returned with another naturalistic immersion in his homeland: A Hero.
The title of the Amazon Studios release, which won the Grand Prix in Cannes, promises feats of courage and bravery. While there are some of those along the way, the protagonist is also deeply flawed and his circuitous path to redemption challenges the audience’s traditional definitions.
“When people hear the title, they’re looking for a heroic film,” Farhadi said during a virtual panel session at Contenders Film: New York. “But when they see it, they are facing a common man who doesn’t have that much of a heroic side to him. There is a paradox in this title.”

He’s a five-time black belt who showed off a fluid brutality in action films such as the Blade franchise; yet when he went to school, he was originally convinced his future and passion lay in performative dance. He’s worked with the likes of Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro, and Spike Lee in some of the auteur’s most seminal films, but his first big break was being the tough guy who taught Michael Jackson how to be “Bad” in that Martin Scorsese music video.

All of that is covered, quite ingeniously, in “The Real Charlie Chaplin.”
Yet the documentary doesn’t shy away from immersing us in Chaplin’s artistry, a subject that has, of course, been covered once or twice before. We learn a lot about his films and how, exactly, he put them together. And the trick of...

The MTV Europe Music Awards (otherwise known as the EMAs) returned for 2021 and took place in Hungary on Nov. 14 at the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna - and the nominees for one of Europe's most highly anticipated award shows made for a pretty impressive lineup. In the end, Sheeran went home with two awards: best artist and best song.
Another Brit who won in the global portion of the ceremony was Yungblud, who won for best alternative. When it came to the UK & Ireland act in particular,...
