Exclusive: Gillian Anderson, who can be seen on Netflix’s The Crown as Margaret Thatcher, has signed with UTA.
The Hollywood talent agency has signed the actress, who broke through in Fox’s The X-Files, in all areas. Deadline understands that Anderson had been without a U.S. agent but over the course of her career has been represented by WME and CAA.
It is a hot signing for UTA with Anderson scoring plaudits for her role in the British royal drama. She stars as the former Prime Minister alongside Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham-Carter in the fourth season of the show, which was created by Peter Morgan.
Anderson told Deadline earlier this year that she never hesitated at the prospect of playing a Pm who many consider tyrannical. “No hesitation at all,” she said. “There are a few things in life where, if they come your way, you just...

New Delhi, Nov 19 (Ians) A film on Indias last Viceroy triggered a series of journeys to the sub-continent as Marina Wheeler attempted to come to terms with its partition in 1947 and the trauma that it caused to her mother. In this she succeeded admirably but could be treading on thin ice when it comes to what exactly caused the upheaval.
"You are right that Partition was a traumatic event for our family. My mother did not speak of it as a young woman, as her father had decreed that none of the family were to do so. After leaving India with my father, I feel the pain and sorrow of it was parceled away, along with the sadness of this ‘second displacement', as she put it," but the story nonetheless had to be told, Wheeler, a London-based barrister and ex-wife of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, told...

After receiving some of the best reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Gurinder Chadha’s “Blinded by the Light” is heading to theaters this summer where it could become one of the season’s biggest crowdpleasers. While its cast is full of newcomers for American audiences, its storyline driven by the music of Bruce Springsteen gives the film major breakout potential.
The official synopsis reads: “The film tells the story of Javed (Viveik Kalra), a British teen of Pakistani descent growing up in the town of Luton, England, in 1987. Amidst the racial and economic turmoil of the times, he writes poetry as a means to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the inflexibility of his traditional father. But when a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen, Javed sees parallels to his working-class life in the powerful lyrics. As Javed discovers a cathartic outlet for his own pent-up dreams,...

This might just be the feel-good film of the year. And it's definitely the best British indie musical since Sing Street. The latest film by Gurinder Chadha, titled Blinded by the Light, just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to a well-earned standing ovation and plenty of cheers. This 1980s rock musical inspired by and integrating the music of Bruce Springsteen, will leave you with that euphoric feeling of wonder and happiness. At least that's how I felt as soon as it ended. This joyful, upbeat, optimistic film is about a Pakistani teen living in a small town in Britain in the 80s who instantly falls in love with Springsteen the moment a friend introduces him to his music. As he struggles with family and racism, he lets the music guide him through adolescence. Set in the late 80s, Blinded by the Light tells the true story ...

Blake Lively stars in the upcoming thriller “All I See Is You” as Gina, a woman who regains her sight after a tragic car accident that took place in her youth. The wonder of sight quickly fades when Lively’s character realizes she’s been blind in more ways than one. The task of discovering her newfound self and the world around her begins as a fairytale, until the fantasy she’s lived inside stops holding up in the hard light of day.
Directed and co-written by Marc Foster (“World War Z”), “All I See Is You” also features actor Jason Clarke as Gina’s husband, who she can now see for the first time. Forster toyed with the use of our five senses while filming, experimenting ways to portray Gina’s life before surgery. Using only sight and sound, the audience is intimately invited into a unique viewing experience.

“What’s your dream house?” might be a simple question. But as the fantasy that guides much of “Lane 1974,” the latest from writer-director Sj Chiro, it’s enough to build a film around.
The Orchard has released a new trailer for the SXSW 2017 favorite, which will be released on-demand later this month.
Set in Northern California in 1974, the charming coming-of-age film features life growing up on a commune. 13-year-old Lane (played by Sophia Mitri Schloss) and her siblings do their best to keep up with their rebellious mother, the self-named Hallelujah (Katherine Moennig), as she migrates through various communes and across the dirt roads of the Northern California.

The Specialty box office had a good number of competing newcomers this Labor Day Weekend, but two titles did especially well as of Sunday. PBS Distribution's Sundance documentary Dolores came in with the weekend's best per theater average, though in just one location at $14,125, while IFC Films' Viceroy's House took in $44,736 in four theaters. Thanks to some stronger-than-expected performances, this weekend ended up better than Mojo's forecast and yet, this is still the worst three-day Labor Day weekend in twelve years. The top twelve grossed a combined $51.5 million and you have to go back to 2000, when the top twelve grossed a combined $47 million, to find a worse performance. That said, both The Hitman's Bodyguard and Annabelle: Creation delivered strong performances to top the weekend. In fact, only four films in the top ten saw any kind of drop compared to last weekend and those drops were minimal with Annabelle's 5% drop being the largest within the top ten. Unfortunately the weekend's new releases didn't make much of a dent with Lionsgate's Hazlo Como Hombre and Weinstein's Tulip Fever failing to crack the top twenty. Lionsgate's The Hitman's Bodyguard finished atop the weekend chart for a third straight weekend in a row with an estimated $10.25 million.

Saturday Am Update: With an estimated $2.4 million, The Hitman's Bodyguard topped Friday's box office on its way to a third straight weekend at #1, looking to deliver nearly $9.5 million for the three-day and nearly $12 million for the four-day holiday. Annabelle: Creation falls into second place with $1.8 million on Friday, heading toward a $6.8 million three-day and the Weinstein's Wind River delivered an estimated $1.5 million on Friday and is looking at a three-day around $5.5-6 million. As for the weekend's new releases, Sony's re-release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind brought in an estimated $485k and is looking at a solid $1.6 million for the three-day, likely to find a spot in the top twelve. The Weinstein's Tulip Fever brought in an estimated $357k and is looking at a three-day around $1.2 million and Lionsgate's Hazlo Como Hombre is falling well short of our forecast after bringing in an estimated $347k on Friday, headed toward a three-day around $1.2 million.

No need to sugar coat it, this was a miserable weekend. The combined gross of the top twelve failed to total over $50 million, something that hasn't happened in an August weekend in over 20 years. In fact, the combined $49 million for the top twelve is the worst since the top twelve combined for $43.5 million in late September 2001. Making matters worse, with next weekend seeing no major, new wide releases things aren't going to improve until It arrives on September 8. Keeping things to this weekend, The Hitman's Bodyguard finished in the top spot for a second weekend in a row with an estimated $10 million. That gross, however, appears a bit precarious. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see actuals dip below the double-digit mark. Should that happen this would be the first weekend in two years to not have a film break double digits over the three-day. The last time was...

The result is an energetic, honest look inside the fraught world of dance and the sort of unique people who populate it.

"You think India is ready to rule itself?" IFC FIlms has debuted an official trailer for the drama Viceroy's House, telling the story of Lord Mountbatten's trip to New Delhi in 1947 to help transition India from British rule to independence. This is a story that has been told before in many other films previously, but we have another new take on it this year. Viceroy's House features Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Huma Qureshi, Michael Gambon, Lily Travers, Simon Callow, Manish Dayal, and Om Puri. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the Belgrade Film Festival. It's goal is to focus on the division of India, and the creation of Pakistan, more than anything and how this destroyed the lives of so many different people.
