"Hi, How Are You Daniel Johnston?" is an American 17-minute short film from 2015, so almost five years old, and this one is probably gaining additional attention these days again for the sad, but simple reason that Johnston died not too long ago. So the question how he is or if he is fine asked early on in here has some kind of tragic tone to it. The director here is Gabriel Sunday and he is also part of the writing team. This short film is mostly live action, but as you can see from the genre listed here on imdb and also from the picture with these little aliens, there are also animated parts in it, probably to add a vast amount of creativity I guess. And this being aliens fits nicely to the oddity of it all. Anyway, they are really never as green as they are shown here. As for the entire project, it reminded me a bit of an Oscar-winning short film from way longer ago about an animator I think, and of another Oscar-nominated short starring John Lennon (and a walrus). Okay, back to this one here. I must say I did not know Johnston before seeing this one and sadly I must say what I saw here did not sparkle my interest a lot in checking him out what he did, his art etc. So no place for false sentimentality here from my side. But somehow I feel he wouldn't really care anyway. He knew very well he is not an artist who is going to appeal to everybody and certainly had no ambition to do so. His approach to music especially, but also to art in general (there were many more fiels in which he was active), was one fairly alternative and edgy that only some would like, but those who did really really liked it. And actually, thsat is pretty nice. I am not judging him with this review here, at least not directly and if at all, then just this one piece of art he personally came up with here as he is also credited as a writer. I would have liked it more had he been just the protagonist and not involved in the making, but that is just my opinion. Anyway, the best was maybe early on the part about romance, later on it really did not have me on the edge of my seat and it already felt a bit repetitive how he is communicating with his former self. Certainly a negative dealbreaker for such a short film. The voices also got annoying eventually I must say. The music was okay, nothing more nothing less, certainly takes a little while to get used to. Okay, I guess this is all then. I recommend this to everybody who likes Johnston as admittedly it does feel a bit personal and if that was the goal then they achieved it. I am not so sure if that is a good thing because it almost feels to personal to let strangers (i.e. people who have never heard of him) into his world and again that means he is probably just for the selected few. If you don't know him, then don't watch. I give it a negative recommendation overall.
