"Civil War" is a film designed to trouble you, to dig under your skin, and to inspire fierce debates among you and everyone else who has seen it. In other words, it's an Alex Garland film.
While this alternate history war epic is bigger than anything he has made before, it's undeniably a Garland film. The obsessions that power films like "Ex Machina," "Annihilation," and "Men" are present here, even if they're presented in a different manner than we've seen before. His ongoing interest in mutation and transformation reaches its apex -- this is a portrait of an entire society undergoing violent and terrifying change, not just a handful of people or a few locations.
Because his films are often challenging and brainy, you'd think Garland himself would make for an intimidating interview. And he does. But he's friendlier and more open than you'd expect: The filmmaker, filled to bursting...

Christopher Nolan’s movie Memento. (Photo Credit – Instagram/IMDb)
In 2000, Christopher Nolan’s Mememto blew everyone away. The psychological thriller stars Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jorja Fox, and Joe Pantoliano. It’s the story of a man named Leonardo, who has short-term memory loss and must seek revenge for his wife’s death. Due to his forgettable memory, Leonardo had to rely only on photographs. The film is based on Christopher’s brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story, Memento Mori.
It has been 24 years since Memento was released, and Nolan fans consider it one of his best directorials. The movie has twists and turns and moments that will startle you often. But did you know that when the movie was screened initially, the response was not that great? Jonathan Nolan made this shocking revelation.

Christopher Nolan is one of the most esteemed directors in the film industry. The filmmaker has carved out a niche for himself, and with back-to-back hits, Nolan has amassed a loyal fanbase too.
The Batman Begins director has a level of genius that shines through his work and captivates his audience. Unsurprisingly, it is almost every actor’s dream to work with him. However, it is quite hard to get a hold of him, as his brother, Jonathan Nolan, revealed recently.

Nicholas Galitzine bombed his “Dunkirk” audition.
The “Mary and George” actor recalled to Variety the time he messed up his tryout scene in front of Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan while Nolan was casting the 2018 war film.
Galitzine said that while he “got very far” in the casting process, he botched the actual reading opposite Nolan.
“He starts reading the scene, [but] it’s not the scene that I prepared,” Galitzine said. “I’m just staring at him for what feels like an eternity. And I finally plucked up the courage to say, ‘I’m sorry, Christopher Nolan, you have the wrong scene or I’d just been royally screwed up by my team.'”
Perhaps needless to say, Galitzine was not cast in “Dunkirk” — he instead marked his breakout role with “Red, White, and Royal Blue.” The actor stars in upcoming romantic drama “The Idea of You” alongside Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway.

In the landscape of modern filmmaking, there isn’t a substantial amount of directors that have every single one of the stars of Hollywood want to be featured in one of their films, and Christopher Nolan is by far leading that group of filmmakers with his prestigious legacy in the film industry.
While not everyone can work with him in their lives for obvious reasons, there was a time when actor Nicholas Galitzine had a solid chance to be featured in his three-time Oscar-winning film Dunkirk.

Alas, the star wasn’t able to bag the role that he had been scouted for, which was a complete blunder on his part.

Nicholas Galitzine may have told his parents that he has a lot of sex scenes in “Mary & George” with both women and men, but that didn’t keep things from getting awkward when his mom and dad were by his side at the series’ London premiere.
“I was kind of in hysterics because there is nothing more uncomfortable than watching your son bed a number of characters even within the first few episodes,” the British actor, 29, tells me during a wide-ranging conversation on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast.
“Mary & George” chronicles the real-life story of Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), a woman in 17th century England who was so hungry for power that she successfully pushed her son George (Galitzine) into becoming lovers with King James (Tony Curran). Created by D.C. Moore, the seven-episode series is based on the non-fiction book “The King’s Assassin: The Fatal...

Normally, this streaming service only carries its own original TV shows and films, but Mac Rumors reports that during the month of April it will offer 29 licensed movies for a limited time. This is the second such experiment from Apple TV+ recently, suggesting that the streamer is seriously considering adding library content as a permanent fixture going forward.
Titles available on Apple TV+ in April include “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “Forest Gump,” “Transformers” and more. The movies will only be available on Apple TV+ for four to eight weeks each. Apple TV+ first began this experiment in early March,...

More than eight months (and one Oscar best picture win) after “Oppenheimer” landed in theaters, Christopher Nolan’s historical epic is still finding new audiences.
The film opened over the weekend in its final market, Japan, with $2.5 million from 343 theaters. It placed third on the country’s box office charts after two local offerings, the horror movie “Strange House” and the animated “Haikyu!!” According to Universal Pictures, “Oppenheimer” is the biggest opening weekend of 2024 for a Hollywood release in Japan, surpassing “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” ($1.6 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($1.3 million).
With these ticket sales, “Oppenheimer” stands at a staggering $965 million globally. It’s a remarkable tally for a three-hour, R-rated drama that mostly takes place in laboratories and the halls of American government. In addition to box office riches, the $100-million budgeted film won seven Oscars, including best picture and director.

Exclusive: Actor Steven Waddington (The Imitation Game) has penned a screenplay that he will direct based on the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, with Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) signed on to star.
Barnard — best known for his breakout in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk but also has credits such as The Goldfinch and the BBC’s popular 2016 War & Peace adaptation — will play White in the pic. Producers told us the film will condense the life and career of the colorful six-time Snooker World Championship finalist into “one crazy night” during which he “is forced to confront his darker side.”
Produced by Black Water Pictures and Lipsync Productions, the feature shoots in London this April. Winstone and his long-term manager, Michael Wiggs, are also on board as co-producers. The film will mark Waddington’s feature directorial debut.

Through 96 years of auspicious Oscar ceremonies, the event has often witnessed one major contender becoming the punching bag for critical backlash on social media. Now that the Oscar winners are known, we can determine the other winners: the studios’ and distributors’ strategic release decisions that impacted results.
Some may reflect genius or gut instinct; others are timing and preparation creating luck. In each case, distribution (or the lack thereof) played a significant role in positioning the films for success — but none of them could be considered a template.
Surprisingly, the universal non-factor appeared to be SAG strike, which constrained promotion. “Oppenheimer” completed most cast appearances in time, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” had press stockpiled from Cannes. The French “Anatomy of a Fall” was unaffected.
“The Holdovers,” along with “Priscilla,” took the biggest chances with their October releases. Both made platform debuts on the same day. Sofia Coppola’s biopic showed a faster response, but Alexander Payne’s film found awards success (as well as a near-equal box office haul and bigger home...

As Christopher Nolan basks in the afterglow of Oppenheimer’s dominant performance at the 96th annual Academy Awards – including a best picture win for the film and a long-overdue best director nod for Nolan himself – speculation is growing about what the British filmmaker will tackle next for his 13th feature. Nolan is typically reticent to speak about future projects; with the director working on a more or less three-year cycle for his last several films, he might not even officially say anything about his new movie until later in 2024 or early in 2025.
But according to rumors that have surfaced online in the past week, Nolan may tackle as his next film a big-screen version of the cult classic TV series The Prisoner, which was broadcast in the UK in 1967 and the US in 1968. The show, which ran for a single season consisting of 17 episodes, was created by Irish actor/writer Patrick McGoohan,...

Christopher Nolan has been the recent recipient of the Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture for last year’s war biopic Oppenheimer. The film had a dream run during awards season this year, winning the top awards at the ceremony. However, this was Nolan’s second nomination as a director, with his first coming a few years ago for the war drama Dunkirk.
The World War II drama about the evacuation of British soldiers from Dunkirk Beach lost the Best Director Award to Guillermo Del Toro, who won for Shape of Water. Back then, Nolan had reportedly been hopeless about the ceremony and blamed Harvey Weinstein’s aggressive Oscar campaign for Shakespeare in Love for ruining the Oscars.

Of the 19.5 million people who tuned into the Oscars on Sunday, 60.3 percent were female, according to Nielsen. While women (and girls age 2+) made up the significant majority of the audience for the 96th Academy Awards (as per usual), it was their lowest percentage since 2016 (58.4 percent female). Yes, even with “Barbie” in the (Dream)house.
Last year’s Academy Awards, also hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, were watched by 18.8 million viewers; 61.1 percent of them were female. The 2022 Oscars, hosted by three women — Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, Amy Schumer — skewed 61.0 percent female. The host-less 2021 program skewed 62.7 percent female; those were the first Covid-impacted Oscars and they settled for all-time low viewership.
The 2021 Oscars remain the high-water mark for representation among nominees, according to the annual study by USC’s Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, and Adobe Foundation. “Nomadland” won Best Picture that year, Best Actress for Frances McDormand, and Best Director for Chloé Zhao.

While the 2024 Academy Awards made history in many ways, they also missed some opportunities to go down in the annals of memory. Anyway, Christopher Nolan, the British-American director who finally won an Academy Award after waiting several years, topped the list for Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer.
On two separate occasions, in 2002 and 2011 for Memento and Inception, respectively, Nolan was nominated for Best Original Screenplay; however, he failed to win. He was again left empty-handed, despite receiving a nomination for Best Director in 2018 for Dunkirk.

Rather than blaming anyone else for the project’s spectacular successes, fans are now cheering for Robert Pattinson.

The 2024 Oscars etched several milestones, and one in particular happened with great frequency: A lot of the night’s winners were first-timers.
Above and below the line talent on “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Godzilla Minus One” and more earned their first Oscars ever, including Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan. Three countries — Japan, Ukraine and the United Kingdom also knocked out some first-time milestones.
Here’s a rundown of those earned their first Oscar at the ceremony.

Freedom and independence fueled many of this year’s Oscar wins, from “Oppenheimer” and “American Fiction” to “Poor Things” and “Anatomy of a Fall.” Creative choices and thinking outside the box paid off for these Oscar winners. Let Hollywood greenlighters take note that Universal’s gamble on “Oppenheimer” paid off big time, along with Warners’ bet on Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which was by no means a guaranteed success.
Accepting the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay for “American Fiction,” backed by T-Street and MRC before it was picked up by MGM/Amazon, TV writer-turned-filmmaker Cord Jefferson said, “I recognize that so many people weren’t given the opportunity I was given. Instead of one $200-million movie, try making 20 $10-million movies.”
Amen to that.
“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan, and Donna Langley
“Oppenheimer” took home its expected seven Oscars, including Nolan’s first wins ever after eight nominations, for Best Picture and Director.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” an unsettling look at the dawn of the atomic era, dominated the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, winning seven prizes, including best picture and best director. The film, which took on an added resonance at a time of international conflicts, also scored Oscars for Cillian Murphy’s haunted lead performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr.’s supporting turn as a vengeful bureaucrat.
The award-winning blockbuster is now available to stream Peacock, which last month also began streaming the following Nolan-directed films: “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Dunkirk,” “Inception” and “Memento.”

Christopher Nolan’s films have always been the perfect exhibits for IMAX due to their large canvasses and epic treatment of the story. Nolan has been a huge proponent of IMAX ever since he used them in The Dark Knight and has been increasingly using them in his films. His latest Oscar nominee Oppenheimer seemed to have pushed the technology to its limit as it became the first film to have black and white images in IMAX.
While Nolan’s films have always been marketed as theatrical experiences that one has to ‘feel rather than understand’, he has also mentioned how the experience becomes much more authentic when seen on a 70mm, fifteen-perf IMAX screen. With only thirty in the world, the screening of Oppenheimer for LA’s Tcl Chinese theater was reportedly a huge hassle for the projectionist, who came out of retirement for the movie.

Christopher Nolan is no stranger to winning critical acclaim, but his biopic based on the life of the troubled, unfaithful, Bhagavad Gita-spouting father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, has earned him more awards more than any other movie he has ever done, including ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Dunkirk’.
For starters, Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, after becoming the second highest-grossing R-rated film in Hollywood history after ‘Joker’, notched up 12 Oscar nominations, far more than the eight each of ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Dunkirk’.
The blockbuster hit ended up with seven Oscars, far less than the 11 each of the Charlton Heston classic, ‘Ben Hur’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, and even the eight each of ‘Gandhi’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
But for Nolan, it must come as a big relief to have finally broken his Oscars jinx and going home with the Best Director trophy,...

No Oscars go without some form of drama on stage. While this year the ceremony was relatively less controversial, one moment received much criticism from fans. Actor Al Pacino was invited on stage to present the award for Best Picture.
While no Envelope Gate (La La Land being announced instead of Moonlight) occurred, Al Pacino reportedly missed one key part of the presentation. The usual tradition is to read out the nominees first and then announce the winner. But the 83-year-old veteran reportedly skipped the nominations and went straight to announce the winner i.e. Oppenheimer.
Al Pacino Makes A Grave Error While Announcing Oppenheimer’s Oscar Win A still from Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer swept the Oscars this year with seven wins. The film won in the main categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing.
