  • 3/10🌠🌠🌠 First off it's a spanish movie with english subtitles which I do not mind if the movie is good so I gave this a try because of the gorgeous ana de armas who has appeared in a few blockbuster american films like "Blade Runner", but this film that was kind of appealing at first it's shot in Black and white and has a cool relaxing feel to it on the top but the undertones were pretty creepy and I thought it would lead to something. Unfortunately that something never came the film is a total borefest with so many things that were not explained and led to nothing. Why they let these films get produced is beyond me. No one could of read this script with holes in it galore and come away thinking this movie would be good. To get into each and every detail of what was wrong about it really would divest my time into rehashing thought about a movie that just doesn't deserve another recap. Do not waste your time unless you wanna watch wasted cinema but that's ecaxlctly what we have here. The description explains what it"s about but the strange presence described doesn't hold water at all. Yes some things are done that are strange and unexplained and they try to laminate a demonic feel over the surface of this canvas but to no avail does it render the genre description of horror just because you cut the lights out and stare at each other Prick your finger and drip a drop of blood into something doesn't garner a fearful description.. They used the word lame in this movie a few times and that's a pretty accurate description if I do say so myself.

Icky poo. Sorry cannot tell you the story. I do not mind some of the productions being in Spanish when I am prepared for that as some tails are told best in Spanish instead of translating or poor attempts at dubbing.

However, unless you looked closely, this critter gave no warning, hint, or heads-up that it was Spanish with English subtitles.

It also has slow noisy background music so even if I follow in the little Spanish I know, I cannot stand this disjointed and noisy sound.
  • Yes, I came to watch this movie because Ana de Armas. And I like the acting, the three actors did a well job. This kind a movie do not pleasant all the people. You must think about, do a little with your brain, it is a psycho-horror. Soft, with a melody drama music, and low mood. 2 girls want to share the rent of an apartment, and they are choosing among the candidates, then a old man appear and take the room. There is a mistery about the last lady Anabel, that leave the room, before the old man came. It's worth your time, it's spanish cinema, good talks and some of dark culture in it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts by quoting "Young Goodman Brown" a short story in 1835 by American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, known for his dark romanticism, about human inherent evil and sin, with psychological complexity.

It's no wonder this movie has Spanish roots, they are master in showing good and evil in humans, what they appear to be, and what they really are is often so contradictory. That's what the movie is about.

The movie is divided into chapters, introduced by a bell, and a title.

The individuals appear in color during the intermission.

At the end of each chapter, you are supposed to understand the title.

Or rewind, look again, abre los ojos, :-)

2 young girls look for a 3rd tenant in their student appartement, after they got rid of a 3rd girl, Anabel, probably because she did not pay her part of the rent.

An old man asks to be accepted, tells about his misfortune in his life, and one of the girls, the student and less beautiful, feels sorry for him, so he is accepted, even though the other girl (Ana) protests.

The old man shows himself useful, a little bit more to Ana.

The girls think his very nice and even let him stay when he does not pay his part. But money still spoils it all.

Slowly the relations of the trio change completely, and no one appears really to be the person he or she tries so hard to show.

I gladly watch it again, because I'm sure I missed a lot of winks and riddles. They talk so quickly in Spanish, that I hardly could read the English subtitles (English is my 4th language).

The acting is very good, Ana has more potential than just a perfect body and cute face, and it's great to see her in this black & white Jarmush style movie in her native tongue. In Blockbuster movies, she can't let go of her acting as much as here.

But Enrique Villén performance steals her the show, he is the main character, he manages in a cold emotionless way to show and hide the different aspects of his personality.

If you mistrust humans and their dark motivations, you may like this movie.
