“It’s apparently fun to drown,” says sixteen-year-old Chloé, the droll, moody teen at the heart of Charlotte Le Bon’s debut feature, “Falcon Lake.” It’s a pithy line that echoes Cecilia Lisbon’s response when she’s asked why she tried to harm herself in Sofia Coppola‘s “The Virgin Suicides.” Unlike Cecilia and her sisters, Chloé only plays at being dead, seeing how long she can float in the lake near her family’s cabin or lie in the road like a deer hit by a passing car.

Here’s the good news.
Facing public pressure and mounting outrage over the lack of female representation among the filmmakers it chooses to celebrate, this year’s Cannes Film Festival is making efforts to diversify beyond the cavalcade of many of the same male auteurs. Instead, there will be a record number of women directors in competition.
Now the bad news. That record is a paltry five female filmmakers, out of 21 films overall, representing less than a quarter of all movies vying for Cannes’ top prize, the Palme d’Or. The dearth of women in the lineup puts pressure on the handful of female directors who were tapped to premiere their films in the South of France.
“Because there are so few women in competition, we feel a lot of pressure, as if we had to be symbols,” admits Léonor Serraille, the director of “Mother and Son.” “We ask ourselves a lot of questions.

Charlotte Le Bon, the Quebec-born actor and filmmaker who is presenting her feature debut, “Falcon Lake,” at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, has already enjoyed several careers. She moved to Paris over 10 years ago after a working as a model, and became an instant star with her hilarious comedy sketches that she delivered on a Canal Plus primetime talk show. She went on to become an actor and worked with Lasse Hallström (“The Hundred-Foot Journey”), Michel Gondry (“L’ecûme des jours”), Jalil Lespert (“Yves Saint Laurent”) and most recently, Mimi Cave (“Fresh”). Le Bon then stepped behind the camera to direct her first short, “Judith Hotel,” which played at Cannes in 2018, and launched an online art gallery showcasing her illustrations and paintings. Memento Intl. is handling sales on “Falcon Lake.”

After bursting onto the international stage with roles in Xavier Dolan’s “Heartbeats” and “Laurence Anyways,” and premiering her own directorial debut, “A Brother’s Love,” at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, Quebecoise filmmaker Monia Chokri approached her sophomore feature as a kind of challenge.
Adapted from the 2017 play by author Catherine Léger, “Babysitter” — premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 22 — marks Chokri’s first directorial outing working from someone else’s text.
“Taking someone else’s words and transposing them to images was a formative experience,” Chokri tells Variety. “[In doing so] I wanted to focus on my own directing, on how best to highlight and improve my work behind the camera. That’s where I could contribute deeply to the project, and could advance from a visual and technical standpoint.”

United States-Mexico border politics are such a minefield at present, you have to marvel at the chutzpah — or simple obliviousness — it takes to make something like “Coyote Lake,” which superficially deploys those issues for the purposes of irrelevant, implausible melodrama. After directing several shorts (and years of work as a production assistant on shows such as “The Mindy Project” and “American Crime Story”), Sara Seligman makes her feature debut with a sluggish mix of thriller and drama that lacks the suspense required in one department and the depth needed on the other. Too flat-footedly earnest even to provide inadvertent bad-movie fun, it opens on five theatrical screens (two in Texas) simultaneous with On Demand launch this Friday. Enthusiasm will be scant.
We first meet teenaged Ester (“Riverdale’s” Camila Mendes) and her much-older mother Teresa (Adriana Barraza) as they’re sharing a seemingly innocuous dinner in their isolated farmhouse with an overnight room-renter.

"There's certain things that once you get into, you can never get out of." Cranked Up Films has released an official trailer for an indie crime drama titled Coyote Lake, based on the real life Falcon Lake, a reservoir on the Rio Grande (on the Texas-Mexico border) along a dangerous drug smuggling route that has become synonymous with cartel violence and mysterious disappearances over the years. The film tells the story of a mother and her teenage daughter, who run a boarding house where they drug, rob, and kill drug-runners who stay there - trying to rid the world of bad people one by one. Until they get taken hostage one night by two injured cartel gangsters. Starring Camila Mendes, along with Adriana Barraza, Andrés Veléz, Manny Pérez, Charlie Weber, and Neil Sandilands. This seems like an intense thriller that presents many different compelling moral quandaries to consider. Take a look.

Tagline: "Be Careful What You Let Surface." An official poster has been released for the crime thriller Coyote Lake. Based on a story involving the disappearance of a Texas man, Coyote Lake was developed by director Sara Seligman as a mother and daughter story. Starring Camila Mendes ("Riverdale") and Adriana Barraza (Drag Me to Hell), the film covers a hot button topic, in the U.S., immigration and border control. Very much a film focused on Mexican Cartels, drug dealing and murder, Coyote Lake looks to be one of the most compelling thrillers to come out, later this year. The official synopsis focuses on Esther (Mendes) and her domineering mother. Together, they run a bed & breakfast, near the Us/Mexican border. Two unwanted guests enter their business, bloodied and distraught. They take the two women hostage. But, these women have dark secrets of their own. Coyote Lake is a Cranked Up Films production.
