Ten years before Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise, the USS Discovery discovers new worlds and lifeforms as one Starfleet officer learns to understand all things alien.
The main title theme's very first musical note has the same pitch, length and spacing to the second note as the main title theme for the original Star Trek (1966) series. From there, it varies until almost the end where a small portion of Alexander Courage's original theme is duplicated.
Despite being a prequel, set 10 years before the original Star Trek and more than a century before The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, the Discovery is far more advanced than any of the ships from those series (spore drive, holographic displays, automated self-covering spacesuits, etc.). The first Starfleet ship that was seen using holographic communications (as opposed to a standard viewscreen) was the Defiant in Deep Space Nine, set approximately 120 years after Discovery.
