Confinement has a touch of The Thing-style paranoia about it, which makes it a little different from previous episodes. Demon Baal has entered our realm and is able wear the skin of various humans (which leads to some nice and juicy flaying effects). Locked in a police station, Ash, Pablo, Kelly, Ruby, Chet, Sheriff Thomas Emery and his family, and tranny prostitute Joanie try and figure out who is the demon.

Those looking for some splattery fun won't be disappointed though: eventually, the proverbial hits the fan when Baal makes his appearance and a skinless demon attacks our heroes. Joanie gets her arm ripped off and throat gashed (blood pumping out of the wound), Ruby blows the skinless monster's head off with the boom-stick, and Ash makes sure it is dead by sawing it vertically in half.

As usual, the practical effects are great (and very messy), but the impressive 'loose fitting skin' CGI is also worthy of a mention.

Another better episode and another enclosed set-piece, this time in a police station. The sheriff out of NEIGHBOURS is decent and the 'identity' suspense similar to THE THING. Plenty of gore and action too makes this a good all-rounder.

    Baal
The mind-manipulating and shape-shifting demon Baal is introduced in a kinky but scary way. what I like really about it, is that he can impersonate a person but wearing their skin, it creates a sense of fear among our protagonist. Them suspecting one another, is what makes this episode such a fun. But it gets a bit repetitive as characters keep doing the same things over and over eg Kelly literally waves a gun at the sheriff and tells him to back off about four times.

overall, the gore effects are fantastic, the cinematography remains top-notch; I like the Paranormal activity-like camera work in the station. The comedy is a bit overplayed tho, some of jokes felt forced at times.
  • OK, let's explain. After the lame previous episode, things were in danger of going bad pretty fast. Luckily a more interesting premise gives some life to the show. Baal's apparition helps.

Our big bad for season two, Baal is here on Earth, and with the book gone, we have a problem. On top of that Ash is detained and in prison, Chet too (even if for more down-to-earth reasons), and pretty soon, everyone is gathered in the police precinct with Baal willing to create havoc all around.

What we have then is one of those who-is-the-bad-it-could-be-anyone episodes. Baal can take the skin out of people and put them as a costume, so we don't know who it is. Cue lots of paranoia, shouting and characters looking threateningly at each other. Not original, but raises the tension and gives some development after the empty previous episode.

All in all, it ends up being more lively (cough cough) than the previous episode, the action is funnier, the comedy actually is there, and we can have some fun with Ash et al.

Oh, and Pablo is having some internal growing.

Ash finds himself getting arrested and Ruby and co. end up having to free him. The group, along with some other bit players including a disgruntled cop and one of Ash's ex-girlfriends, end up being trapped in the police station but someone called Baal, who it seems is our new big bad. Meanwhile Pablo is starting to change into the Necronomicon. You read that right.

Apparently a seductive, powerful phenomenon, Baal was a bit of a disappointment when he finally revealed himself. He just looked like the creepy guy who got held back in college 10 years in a row and sits at the back of lectures cat calling female students. Still, Baal skinning people and removing skin that he stole off of people was really cool – definitely a highlight of the season. The skinless baddie was also quite cool, although the prosthetics did look a bit too stiff. A couple of buckets of grease wouldn't have gone amiss. As stated, Baal takes off the skin off victims and wears theirs as his own. As a result, the people in the station know that one of them is Baal. In an episode that homages John Carpenter's The Thing, there's arguments and sweaty palms all round as each accuses the other of being the anomaly.

I do feel they need to tone down the comedy in this series or at least rework it. Season 1 had me squirming at the violence and then laughing out loud a second later at something funny. In the second series however it seems they are throwing in a joke at every possible opportunity, some of which are funny and most of which are not. Dramatic tension and genuine horror is becoming a rarity. The dick jokes and fart gags could be spaced out a little more to give time for some scares.
