Depicting Ted Kennedy's involvement in the fatal 1969 car accident that claims the life of a young campaign strategist, Mary Jo Kopechne.
The 'father' and 'son' that find the car in the water the morning after the crash are actually father and son in real life and were chosen from a photo of the father fishing with his son. They shot in Chappaquiddick, Ipswich, MA and Rosarito, Mexico.
The exterior door used in the movie as the home of the Kopechnes is a fiberglass model with an oval glass insert with brass caming. This style of door didn't exist until the mid 1980s.
