Mindhunter author and FBI agent John Douglas, upon whom this series is based, and whose groundbreaking criminal profiling methods inspired author Thomas Harris in writing the book The Silence of the Lambs, also worked as an advisor during the filming of The Silence of the Lambs (1991) (1991). Both Netflix's Mindhunter (2017) series and The Silence of the Lambs (1991) were filmed in and around Pittsburgh, PA despite neither of the two taking place in Pittsburgh.
In at least two episodes, there's a poster on Debbie's wall over the table advertising a concert by garage punk band The Cynics. This band was formed in 1983, so they couldn't be playing in the late 70's when season 1 is set. And it couldn't be another band with the same name, since the logo and locale (the advertised concert is in Pittsburgh, the aforementioned band's home town) fit.
