  • I honestly dont believe this movie is a true story at all.....
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is a prison drama based on a true story. George Lee Martin (Gbenga Akinnagbe ) is doing time for a series of robberies. He has become a prison boxer and quite good. In fact he is offered his freedom and a spot on the US Olympics team. George won't go without his "sissy" (Shawn-Caulin Young) cellmate and lover. Toss in the typical prison riot and a few shanks and you have a film.

The fact that George didn't go was anti-climatic. Well acted, but went nowhere. No failure to communicate.

    Guide: F-word. Nudity
  • Heart, Baby! is one of those movies that you will watch over and over. It has it all: amazing true story, exceptional cast, great music. I laughed, I cried, I FELT. I could list every cast member and tell you just how perfectly they fit their role, but you must see it to understand. I will, however, say that Shawn-Caulin Young is exceptional in his portrayal of Crystal; and Jackson Rathbone gives the best performance of his career so far as Andy "Doc" Dixon. This movie is magnificent. There's no other word to describe it.
  • Every once in a while, you see a film that changes you. It educates you or opens your heart to things you thought you were already educated and open about. "Heart, Baby" (written and directed by Angela Shelton) still has my heart reeling... If you care at all about Transgender rights and prison reform, please see this film. If you think our prison systems are just fine, see it anyway...Heart, Baby will change your mind about what you think you know. It's just that good!

The acting is superb, and Shawn-Caulin Young's performance is epic. Beautifully written, directed and filmed, this is a story that will pull on your heat strings. The trailer makes it seem like this is a boxing movie, but it's about so much more and based on a true story. Happy to see it's going into wider release because independent filmmakers brave enough to tell stories like this need our support. Don't miss this film!

Preordered and watched this movie based on the previews... SO in love with this film! Amazing imagery, beautifully filmed. The story grips you and doesn't let go. I WILL own this disc! This film has Heart, Baby!
  • One of the best movies I have ever seen. Highly emotional, intelligent, incredible acting and cinematography of its finest. It moved me so much and rocked my heart that I am still thinking about the story. Which is a true story! A love story that changed my world. Directed by Angela Shelton. You will never forget this movie! Amazing!
  • Must see true story that will challenge your deepest core beliefs! Equally entertaining for Men and Women! This movie proves Love overpowers all! We will endure anything life throws at us to satisfy our heart!
  • This movie is amazing. It touches on so many real topics and issues, and does so in a beautifully real way. Friendship, love, rejection, survival, violence, race, prison, and faith. The humanity shown by the people in this story is at times both discouraging and heartening- and so real. The truth about Doc and George will knock you out and stay with you for quite a while after watching. Can't wait to watch it again!
  • Very inspirational story! Loved it... A great story of overcoming the odds and realizing your dream..
  • This film brings a candid and loving light on a subject that so relevant today. The world of the film and the characters in it are not what you would expect and the truthfulness of the performances and the passion of both the direction and production create a vivid and colorful story that makes you laugh and cry. Shawn- Caulin Young's performance is fantastic!

I had pretty much stopped going to movies about twenty years ago. You can only tolerate a certain number of explosions, flying car wrecks and leading men that look like the baby-faced sissies in your high school classes. Skip science fiction and animated cartoons there isn't much left for real movie buffs. This weekend I was persuaded to watch "Heart, Baby!" Finally I was entertained for an entire movie! The actors looked like their roles were written specifically for each of them. A great story! A range of emotions are evoked from the viewer and there is not a lagging part in the entire feature. I live just across the state line from Tennessee and there isn't a character in the movie with whom I couldn't identify and relate. At the risk of sounding chauvinistic, I was pleased to see a woman writer and director open the doors to male characters in such an all-male environment of men's prison and the boxing ring. Quite an accomplishment and we're all better off for it. I have bought the movie and it's going to be making the circle of family and friends. An absolute joy!
  • WOW! This film is SO wonderful. I am beyond impressed by how poignant the picture is - how beautifully it's shot - but also (which I didn't expect) the humor in it makes it real - human. This movie is a knock out!!!
  • Heart, Baby left me breathless. This powerful film embraces love and loyalty. The genuine love and friendship between George and Doc gave me a wonderful, heartwarming feeling. Crystal's amazing love for George - the hand stitched robe, the solution to George's pain. This film holds a special place in my heart and will continue to replay in my mind and soul. Watch this film and you will feel the love from the actors and the director. Amazing.
  • This is a film that everyone should see......why you may ask? Well for starters its a true story about a very human existence told from a few different angles. The story was researched extensively by cast and crew for accuracy this makes the story so much better. As a fanatic of film or anything that is well written I have spent most of my life watching people's stories on the silver screen. The Hammer is a beautiful movie that shines a light on so many different controversial topics and wraps them all up in a powerful blanket of love. This is a human story that can evoke the strongest emotions in the hardest of hearts! This film has the ability to do what many other films can't and that is make the world a more loving compassionate place and you may just learn a little more about yourself in the process.

The boxing genre has produced many great movies to be sure, usually great because while boxing is the center of the plotting, these are movies about people of immense character. No exception here, but even more so. The variety of characters is amazing too. It has it's brutal moments, as you would expect in a film set in prison, but the overwhelming thing I was left with is that this is a movie about the possibility for redeeming love and gentleness and supreme transcendent loyalty in the most adverse conditions. The fact that it is based on a genuine story, with the two principals showing up in cameo surely adds to the interest. It's a very unusual sort of story because of its extremity in all ways, and the noble and proper choices people can make under enormous pressures. A movie, I suppose, must be categorized, and this one seems slotted as a boxing biopic, but I suppose its a many layered sort of love story. It could be called a prison movie, or a romance, or a topical picture about transgender relations, or a film about inter racial brotherhood, and it all works ,like a great stew. You need a great script to handle so many elements, and terrific acting from a lot of actors to pull this off, and that is just what has happened. It is a very life-affirming movie, and realizing that it is absolutely true to actual events, authentic, as shown in the final credits and as a cursory internet search reveals, gives it that much more power. Highly recommended.
  • Loved every moment... thought provoking! Shawn Young is a superb actor and deserves an award!
  • The most searing love story I had never been told before. This film is a gorgeous visual experience from beginning to end. A triumph of the true-story form. True to it's tagline, "the truth will knock you out", this film takes its viewers on a visceral ride through a myriad of social, political and geographical landscapes and strikingly human terrains most director's wouldn't dare to explore in one fell swoop. The cast and the characters they embody wholeheartedly carry the viewer through. A must watch.
  • I've learned over the years if there's a film created by Angela Shelton, you have to see it,

I absolutely love this movie. It's one of the most powerful and important films I've seen in a long time. Though the film is about boxing and a boxer, it's about so much more. I need to purchase a copy for my personal library.
  • A heartfelt story by an excellent filmmaker. Great performances given on a well written script.

    10/10
    Wow
I'm the first to say that, as a rule, I'm not into prison movies. But this one?... Wowwww: What a journey, and I'm so glad I went. The fact that this is a true story (turns out 2 of these main characters are still alive) about "hardened criminals" whose inner selves are revealed as incredible Souls??...was fine. Let's face it, when it comes down to it ... Souls are pretty incredible, and movie formulas are pretty predictable. So it definitely took me a bit to get into it (I tend to prefer movies that take me more "on vacation" ... versus, you know, behind bars). And this was the real wow for this movie lover - wanting to stay there, stay in it. Once this film gets us established to the fact that we're IN there - in nnnnightmare prison-life hell - it then transitions us in to a gorgeous-to-look-at piece of poignant storytelling. The writer/director stunningly captured the beauty and light of the place with its cinematography and pallet, which was a surprising at first (as a former Forensics Director overseeing community-reentry programs ...I've BEEN in prisons). But there was the wow again. The aesthetic beauty quietly, subtly revealed throughout the film turned out to be theeee perfect symbolism riding alongside this incredible journey: Beauty resides "within," even in hell. You'll want to keep tissues close by, truth and emotion present to us in many forms, this time it's via a prison flick.

A well done movie, based on a true story about boxer George Martin and his love interest. This touching story shows the true meaning of love and loyalty.

This movie was so amazing! It's a must see. I loved it so much I now own the DVD.
  • I have so many wonderful things to say about this special real-life story and the genius piece of moviemaking written, directed and produced by Angela Shelton. Seriously, wow. I spent hours after I was done watching the film incoherently babbling/trying to explain to a movie critic friend of mine what I had just experienced. And yes, it did "change my mind." And I didn't know that it needed to be changed. Do yourself a favor and watch "The Hammer," a true-life story about pure love. It just might change your life. I know it did mine.
  • Everything about this movie is amazing! From the cast to their acting ability to the story!! This is a must watch film. He gave up freedom and fame for love!!! Come on!!! Love it!
  • By far..this was one of the best movies I have ever seen on all levels. The highs, lows, suspense, very emotional, intelligent, incredible acting and cinematography of its finest. I cried because of the emotions the movie displayed. I mean 8 years working none stopped in efforts to get reunited with his brother.. Rodie moved me as it showed loyalty. I am still thinking about the story initially I did not want to watch it due to circumstances and realized I was being bais.. Again like it has already been stated this is a true story! A true love story in a unprefect world that changed the world . Directed by Angela Shelton. You will never forget this movie! Amazing!
