| A great horror movie for young women in high school
I'm not being snarky with that title.

Wish Upon is well made movie, and some of the scenes are laid out really well. The garbage disposal scene in particular had me grinning ear to ear with what the director was doing. The acting is high quality, the production is high quality. The dialogue is good enough, the rest of the writing is almost good enough.

But it's also really unoriginal, uncompelling, without anything in the way of drama, and I found it hard to empathize with its characters.

What's clear is that Wish Upon was not made for me. This is a movie that was made for young women in high school. This is a horror movie with an unironic shopping montage, a horror movie that sometimes feels remarkably similar to a Disney flick. So while I didn't get a lot out of this movie, my issues just aren't going to be there for the intended audience.

That said, if it matters, it is not a sanitized movie, not a movie for the parents of young women but for the young women themselves. It pushes its PG-13 as far as it will go. Admittedly, that's not a long way, not when it comes to horror, but yes, Wish Upon genuinely attempts to be a horror movie.

So my verdict is totally dependent on who you are. If you are a young woman that wants to see a horror movie, see Wish Upon. I think it is aimed at you and it does what it does well. If you not a young woman, but are a horror fan wondering if Wish Upon is worth your time, it's probably not. It's a well-made but forgettable movie aimed at a different audience.
