Comedian Chris Rock may be at odds with Will Smith now. But there was a point he held the actor in as high regard as Denzel Washington. Because of this, he wanted them both to avoid this well-known Tyler Perry trope.

There has been a longtime Hollywood controversy regarding African-American male actors wearing dresses in films and television. Some believe doing so only hurts their image in the long run. Comic Chris Rock is one of many who’ve voiced his disapproval of dressing black actors in drag. In an interview with Vibe (via The Jasmine Brand), Rock shared how disappointed he’d be if two of Hollywood’s biggest stars followed that blueprint.
“Tyler Perry is great in a dress, but I don’t want to see Denzel or Will Smith in a dress.

Eighteen years ago, Tyler Perry brought his DIY play to the big screen. Released in 2005, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” chronicles one beleaguered woman’s journey to healing and self-discovery after being betrayed by her philandering husband. The film features all the classical elements of Perry productions. It’s set in a predominantly Black area of the South, there are theatrical church scenes and plenty of the over-the-top histrionics extracted straight from his plays. But more importantly, there was Madea.
Played by Perry himself, the matriarch emerged as a rambunctious, pistol-packing matriarch who’s as comfortable espousing quirky wisdom as she is ferocious clapbacks. Upon its release, the flick got mixed reviews from critics — but it grossed $50.7 million at the box office, just about 10-times more than its budget. Since then, Perry’s released nine additional Madea films, with the eight that came out in theaters grossing $570 million at the box office,...

Chris Rock's 2014 film "Top Five" is about a character named Andre Allen, but really it's about Chris Rock. Andre is an actor best known for silly comedy films, his biggest hit being a cop comedy wherein he wore a silly bear suit. Now on the road to recovery from alcoholism, the Allen character is attempting to break into more "serious" cinema by playing the real-life Haitian revolutionary Dutty Boukman. The bulk of "Top Five" is an extended, confessional interview between Andre and a journalist named Chelsea (Rosario Dawson) as they walk and talk and tell stories and anecdotes. "Top Five" is a conversational and breezy film that gently criticizes the state of modern comedy, the nature of fame, and how ridiculous life can feel after surviving a dark time of addiction.
Rock, having worked in stand-up since he was a teenager, devoted much of his script for "Top Five...

YouTuber Liza Koshy has taken to Instagram to apologize after a video of her using a mock Asian accent resurfaced. Another clip included footage of Koshy pretending to speak Japanese.
“What I once thought of as ‘innocent jokes,'” wrote Koshy, “were actually tainted with implicit bias, and what might have been intended as ‘playful’ was actually to some, incredibly painful. And for that, I am sorry.”
One video, which was originally posted in 2016, shows Koshy pretending to have an Asian accent while tasting candy from Japan and Hawaii. Then-boyfriend — and fellow YouTuber — David Dobrik is also in the clip.
Dobrik says, “It’s not racist. That’s like the sounds I hear when they talk.”
“No, it’s not racist as long as I keep saying no,” says Koshy.
In a second video, the couple pretend to be able to speak Japanese after eating the candy.

YouTube star and comedian Liza Koshy will preside over a dance-competition reality series coming to Quibi — a kind of mashup of “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Wipeout.”
In “Floored,” two opposing teams of skilled dancers will try their best to perform a routine while the dance floor itself actually lifts, tilts, drops, shakes and spins in time to the music. The dancers also will have to dodge objects that will thrown their way.
“As someone who hosts dance parties of one in their living room, I am more than ready to host this one,” Koshy said in a statement. “I’m so excited to celebrate and scream for the fearless, the focused and the flexible as they step up to the plate… or floor.”
It’s the latest in a steady stream of programming-deal announcements from Quibi, the ambitious and untested short-form mobile subscription service led by Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman.

During an appearance on Bevy Smith’s SiriusXM show, “Bevelations,” Tyler Perry revealed that, in 2019, he’s planning a farewell stage tour and film: “Tyler Perry’s a Madea Family Funeral” will mark the end of the character upon which his media empire was built. “It’s time for me to kill that old bitch,” he said. “I’m tired, man. Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” has launched impressively with a $12 million opening day, portending a four-day Easter weekend total of more than $50 million at 4,234 North American locations.
Friday’s estimate came in well above Warner Bros.’ tracking from a day earlier, which had been $45 million. The studio had already adjusted its projection upward from the $38 million to $42 million range earlier in the week.
The sci-fi spectacle earned an A- CinemaScore with an audience that was 59% male. The overall audience was 44% under 25, who gave it an A-, while those over 25 gave the film a B+.
The solid opening day performance validates the studio’s decision to move up the opening by a day to Thursday to take advantage of many moviegoers being on vacation during the period.
The movie is also debuting day and date internationally in 62 markets, with $3.2 million in foreign grosses since opening in Tuesday previews.

In order for a film or television episode to pass the Bechdel Test, it has to have at least two named female characters and those two characters have to have at least one conversation that is not about a man. Disney continued its record-breaking year this weekend as 2016 became the studio's best year at the domestic box office ever. Contributing to that success, of course, is the studio's latest Marvel Studios release, Doctor Strange, which led the weekend box office for the second week in a row, contributing to a weekend in which the top twelve was up 56% compared to the same weekend last year. The weekend's success was a combination of strong holdovers such as Strange and fellow sophomore features Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge, along with newcomers including Arrival and Almost Christmas, all of which helped the top twelve combine for over $150 million. Dropping only 49% in its second weekend, Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange delivered an impressive $43 million in its second weekend as the film's domestic gross climbs to over $153 million in just ten days of release. With an estimated $16.67 million Boo! A Madea Halloween took the #1 spot at the weekend box office domestically for a second week in a row. The film's cume has now grown to $52 million as it fell just 41% in its second weekend, a spectacular performance following the film's $28.5 million opening last weekend. As noted in our weekend preview, Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection...

Tyler Perry is celebrating his box office victory from this weekend, which ushered in the $27.6 million debut of “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” telling TheWrap on Sunday, “I’m having a pretty good day.” The comedy sequel, featuring Perry as his famously reactive grandmotherly character, opened at No. 1, and the film had enough momentum to unseat Paramount’s “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” — which was originally pegged as the weekend’s top movie. Still, Perry wasn’t completely satisfied. “I still have issues getting screens in white neighborhoods believe it or.

There is plenty to discuss in a weekend where Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween is crowned champion of the largest three-day weekend the 2016 box office has seen in over two months. Boo!, along with fellow new releases Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Keeping Up with the Joneses, generated 61.6% of the top twelve's overall gross of nearly $114 million, up 28% from last weekend and up 20% from last year. The weekend also saw a stellar opening for A24's Moonlight in limited release, delivering the largest opening per theater average of the year, and there are plenty of overseas results to discuss. Topping the weekend box office, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween brought in a stellar $27.6 million from 2,260 theaters ($12,212 PTA), the largest opening for a Madea branded feature and for a Tyler Perry-directed film overall since 2009's Madea Goes to Jail. As far as Madea-branded titles are concerned,...

Four new wide releases this weekend should help propel the top twelve over $100 million this weekend and, for the first time in six weeks, show improvement over the same weekend last year. This weekend is also going big with sequels, delivering three of them including Tom Cruise returning as the title star in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, the horror sequel Ouija: Origin of Evil and Tyler Perry's latest outing as Madea in Boo! A Madea Halloween. Fox will also be releasing the ensemble comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses and Pure Flix is releasing the faith-based, Columbine drama I'm Not Ashamed into just over 500 theaters. Overall the weekend top twelve should come in around $100-105 million if all goes as forecasted. At the top, it would be a nice win for Paramount should they land a #1 finish with Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The studio has had a rough go this year,...

Marita: Jennifer Lawrence will star in Marita as a woman who fell in love with Cuba's political leader Fidel Castro. It's based on the true story of Marita Lorenz, a young German woman who had an affair with Castro in 1959 and later was recruited by the CIA for an assassination attempt. Sony Pictures acquired a pitch by Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle), who will write the screenplay. [The Wrap] Boo! A Madea Halloween: Actor/filmmaker Tyler Perry has begun production on Boo! A Madea Halloween, in which he will reprise the role of Madea, a female character he created in 1999. Tyler Perry will write, produce, direct and star in "Boo! A Madea Halloween" for Lionsgate with production having just gotten underway in Atlanta ahead of an October 21st release.
Perry and Chris Rock originated the idea as a joke - a fictitious Madea Halloween movie which appeared in Rock's 2014 film "Top Five".
Lionsgate then approached Perry and suggested that they actually make the movie which will be the ninth Madea film since the release of the first - "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" - back in 2005.
Set on Halloween night, Madea will keep a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teens and must fend off killers, paranormal poltergeists, ghosts, ghouls and zombies while
Bella Thorne, Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Andre Hall and Yousef Erakat also star while Ozzie Areu and Will Areu will produce.

Remember that joke from Top Five about the Tyler Perry Halloween movie, Boo! A Madea Halloween? Lionsgate did, and now they're making it an actual movie with the same exact title. Variety reports that the studio has set an October 21 opening date for the real-world film, which follows Perry's Madea as she fights a bunch of "killers, paranormal poltergeists, ghosts, ghouls and zombies while keeping a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teens." (One of whom will be played by Disney star Bella Thorne.) If you're reading this thinking that this movie sounds awful, remember that Tyler Perry is not making these movies for you.

Over the course of her career, Tyler Perry.s creation Mabel "Madea" Simmons has had any number of adventures. She.s battled spouses, done a stint in jail, gone toe-to-toe with unruly kids, and even celebrated Christmas in her own special way. Her next big screen appearance, however, has the potential to be the best one yet, as Boo! A Madea Halloween is in the works, and she.ll battle all kinds of your favorite horror movie monsters, and teenagers. This is going to rule. Yes, Boo! A Madea Halloween is the full title, which is wonderfully appropriate. Variety reports that production is already underway at Tyler Perry.s Atlanta studio, with Lionsgate wanting to get it into theaters before Halloween. From the description in the trade, it sounds like the cantankerous, vindictive older woman is going to have her hands full, as she.ll battle all manner of threats.

After a couple of years away from feature filmmaking to focus on TV, Tyler Perry Studios announced today that they have started production on a new Madea filmtitled "Boo!
