  • I cannot properly review this without discussing the plot... but discussing the plot would involve major spoilers. So the option left is to review the presentation... which is superb.

One cannot really dwell on the concept of the film because there are too many paradoxes to fit comfortably into a box. Focusing on such would be like picking apart a folk tale. Instead, we simply accept what happens and don't worry too much about the details.

If we focus on the far more important presentation of the story itself, this brings us to writing, directing, acting, imagination and presentation... all of which are superb. Parts are funny, parts are heartwarming, parts will very likely bring the viewer to tears. That's quite an accomplishment all in one film.

The actors do a terrific job of presenting the parts they portray, both in character and in stages of their relationship-- which in this story requires quite a bit of acting versatility. The sets are simple and common-place. There re no special effects, no apparent CGI, no action or chase scenes. The entire movie is carried simply by story and acting. It is both captivating and moving.

A unique vehicle appears in this film: a simultaneous climax and anticlimax. One will have to actually view the film to understand how this works-- and how well it's done in this vehicle. There aren't many films which have such opportunity, but when it works it works-- and in this film it works very well.

One of the best romances I've seen... which is saying quite a bit since it is totally off the wall. Not recommended for those who "over-think" plot lines. But if you have a sense of romance and appreciate a well-presented story, if you love a movie with heart, this is highly recommended. I would watch it again-- which is the best praise I can give any film.
  • Im not a big fan of japanese movies. i usually dont watch it. but i happened to see this, and this was so great movie. at first, it seems quite strange to see the girl's reaction to him. and then, we can take it in with the later scene and story line. the more the story line flows, the more it is touching. i actually didnt like the ending but especially the story line was excellently great. you might feel it is one of the run of the mill japanese movie bcuz they have plenty of time traveling movies but its pretty prominent among those
  • This is not an ordinary romance movie. Without spoiling too much, it has a supernatural element to it, something to do with time and the future. The problem is, it just doesn't make sense. From an emotional point of view, it's a nice roller coaster ride so I get why so many people love it. But if you lean towards thinking with the rational side of your brain, it's kind of frustrating.
  • I saw this film on holiday in Bangkok recently and it was so much better than I thought it was going to be. I didn't have too much trouble working out the 'twist', truth is the title is a spoiler anyway. But that didn't stop the enjoyment, in fact it made you think more about the situation the two lead characters were in and the consequences that would mean to them.

In fact my only regret is that this won't get seen by a wider audience, or perhaps worse still it will get remade into a version much worse than this one. For now all I can say is see it, it will make you realize how much more complicated life could be.
  • I think this movie didn't get much reputation that its deserve outside Asian; I would highly recommend you to give it a chance the story is well written and the logic of it is debatable. it might be hard to get at first but they have an interest transition to make you understand. the problem is that they might not be an English dub anytime soon due to its popularity. still give it a try.

Tomorrow I'll date yesterday's you had a nice and interesting plot.

The couple had great chemistry, first and foremost. It is actually one of the few movies where I really liked Nana's character. She looked good with Fukushi's character and they helped the love story a lot.

The main plot is not confusing as well. Although it could have been, they presented it so perfectly that it was not even tiring to watch.

The ending, however, was not as good as a happy one.

So, overall, seven and a half out of ten.
  • Boku wa asu, kinou no kimi to dêto suru is a classical Japanese melodrama. And i don't say that in a bad way.

Much like the classic "Love Letter, directed by the brilliant Hirokazu Kore Edo, this movie wraps nostalgia, romance and drama by pulling the right strings of your heart.

It is a deliberate choice by the director to rise the music and focus on the actor faces, he wants you to cry and you probably will.

That's because Boku wa asu, kinou no kimi to dêto suru succeeds in spectacular fashion in building an adorable relationship between the main characters in the first act.

Even if a bit confusing - and requiring a huge suspension of disbelief - this film is a winner. If you like melodramas, movies that you know have the objective to touch you and make you cry, you can't go wrong with this one.

    Absolutely beautiful romance/fantasy flick.

The idea of reverse time seems original if we ignore Benjamin Button for a time, but the blind spots of the storyline weakens the power of the movie.

-How does the female character repeat the story? -How does this world take place in that universe? -Are there anybody else experiencing this? etc.

Narrative structure is powerful than film's narration style.

It's rare to find romance movies which makes you think at the end, and this one did it perfectly. Unlike the standard Hollywood romance movies where the guy always gets the girl etc, this movie makes you think more about how people treasure something knowing it's only temporary, and by the end make you think if it was you in that situation, would you just pass it by or embrace it knowing the pain that's about to come.

Watching Emi's timeline I could feel my heart dropping as you know how hard it was on her, but at the same time she embraced the most precious moments of her life knowing how hard it would be after.

Really makes you think at the end, would you take it with arms wide open or choose to ignore the most wonderful time of your life to avoid the pain that's about to come?

One of few Japanese romance story I'd recommend. The second time watching the movie is better than watching it the first time.(Must see the movie 2+ times)!! Spoiler ahead: Thinking Takatoshi was able to spend his last minute with Emi till 11:59, but Emi spent her last night alone struck me hard. But on the other hand, it is also hard and regretful on Takatoshi for him not able to say thanks for the 30 days on Emi's last day. On the first couple of days for Takatoshi, Emi said If she were able to tell the future she could've win lotteries but this is not the case. Many implication on true love throughout the film.
  • Stumbled upon this movie tonight. Ohhhhh God all these years i thought i was so tough. never cried like this in my life before. Guess we'll meet again. and i will date yesterday's you xoxoxoxoxxx

This is one of the best Japanese movies I've ever watched. The plot was delivered nicely, story was beautiful, and the movie were able to make me engaged with the characters. The soundtracks were nicely picked and added to boost the mood. The love story between the characters were also beautiful which makes you curious about what happened next. For me, this is one of "must watch" movies and I was having a great time watching it. I recommend this movie for those who love to watch love drama and love a movie called "The Time Traveller's Wife" (2003). I also recommend to watch it alone so you can fully feel the vibe that the movie delivered
  • Watching the first part of the film had me wondering if I was watching a romantic movie made for 10 year olds (which is not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting). It was too airy, too cheesy, youthful, and innocent.

The second part came in, and it all made sense. The film did a great job making the premise easy to understand.
  • One of the best romantic movies I ever saw. Recommended.
  • As I started watching the movie I couldn't help but cringe at the plot, especially at the main male character and how the couple's relationship took off... until I caught myself crying in the middle of the movie and things started to make sense. Overall, it was a good movie with an interesting plot that's worth your time, go watch it.
  • It is a great movie, I've just finished watching it, and it is already one of my favorite movies, and it will be in my special list.
  • This movie has everything for a drama movie. Great cast, touching story and a plot twist that you wouldn't want to understand till the end. You just want our protagonists to be happy in the end, cause I know I do.

Sota Fukushi and Nana Komatsu delivers their great performance here and we should enjoy their love story.... until the last train departed.

Finished watching this movie yesterday in the normal direction and was so pleasantly surprised at how the concept worked, but I realized that watching it in its original representation only tells half the story - from the boy's perspective. (Although there's a quick montage at the end from the girl's perspective) but watching it again in the reverse daily order illustrates the girl's perspective in full and you come to appreciate the acting and consistency of the emotion that the girl is going through in reverse. Amazing experience, you've got to try it to fully appreciate it!

Finally found a copy of this after seeing it in a list of best time-travel films and watched it with Perrin. Loved it!

It starts quite slowly before the time-travel element is fully revealed (after a couple of earthly hints). When it does it's very nicely revealed and immediately caused me a bit of head-scratching. I had to pause it a couple of times to get my head around the different directions of travel so it took a while for me to get comfortable with him travelling into her part and her travelling into his. Once I did though it was beautiful.

The last gut-wrenchjng scene when she leaves on the train after seeing him for the last time after he meets her for the first time is really very moving.

I said to Perrin that I can't believe this hasn't been snaffled up and remade by Hollywood- it's surly just a matter of time.

Great film with a lovely story and a terrific time-travel slant.

    87/100.
  • Wow, I was pleasantly surprised! Get ready for a tearjerker though! From start to finish, this love story of star-crossed lovers keeps tagging at your heart-strings. Very well written and directed. Also, the two leads' chemistry was amazing! I usually don't recommend romance, but this one is a must-see. ("Tomorrow I Will Date With Yesterday's You", Boku wa Asu, Kino no Kimi to Deto Suru) Those who cannot watch fantasy or sci-fi without questioning every single situation that seems implausible may not enjoy this movie, but just like any fantasy/sci-fi, just shelf your suspension of disbelief for 2 hours and just enjoy this flick for what it is, a love story of two star-crossed lovers..

  • So far there are only two romance movies that break me. The first is A moment to remember (2004), both movie have a great actor/actress, great plot, amazing soundtrack and lastly both offer us the sense of helplessness. This is a must watch. Trust me.

An incredible storyline, wonderful acting, filming etc...

The storyline is so emotional, even for me who does not speak Japanese, watching this still brings me to tears. Especially for someone like me who loves sad and romantic endings for movies/books, I would recommend to watch!

If you overthink the plot though, it does not make sense. It is explained clearly, but if you go overthink you'd say the whole thing has no scientific base.

The actors were in one word: magnificent! You could see Emi's mixture of emotions, but it is just not enough for you to guess the plot. Only in the last scenes where we saw everything from Emi's POV (point of view) we could understand her emotions precisely, those scenes were very touching!

If the plot would be more logical I think I would've given it a 9 or even a 10. But overall: great movie, definitely worth watching!
