While both categories are “not known for surprises,” as Eckmann puts it off the bat, our segment agrees that all bets are off this year with uncertainty around the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Will we see the return of old favorites or will increased viewing allow new(er) shows and faces to join the ranks?

“Queer Eye” has won Best Structured Reality Program at the Emmys twice in a row (2018-2019), which is why it’s so strange that its quintet of co-hosts has never been recognized by the television academy, even with a nomination. Could Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Jonathan Van Ness finally break through in the race for Best Reality Host? They’ll have to overcome the television academy’s unusual bias against non-competitive shows.
The Emmys introduced the Best Reality Host category in 2008. And though hosts of both competitive and non-competitive reality shows have always been eligible, that first list of nominees was strictly competitive: Tom Bergeron (“Dancing with the Stars”), Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”), Howie Mandel (“Deal or No Deal”), Ryan Seacrest (“American Idol”) and winner Jeff Probst (“Survivor”).

Hey, "America's Got Talent" fans. Tonight, June 9, 2020, another new episode of America's Got Talent did indeed air. It was another audition round for round 3. All the judges: Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara were indeed on hand to critique the talent. Tonight's episode kicked off with an audition from Emerald Gordon Wulf. She's a 13 year old contortionist that has appeared on Toddlers & Tiaras and Little Big Shots. After her performance, she got a yes from all 4 judges. Next up, was Bank of Harmony. They are a Barbershop quartet that won CW’s Christmas Carol Challenge. They also previously appeared on Spike TV’s Caraoke Showdown, which was actually produced by judge Howie Mandel. They got buzzed during their performance. Afterwards, Simon said they were dated or out of date, and they got a no from all four judges.

The majority of the Sunday before Memorial Day was filled with reruns across networks, with the exception of NBC and Fox, the later of which won the night in the adults 18-49 demographic with its second primetime Nascar race in two weekends.
At NBC, there was a double helping of Little Big Shots, which included the season finale. Both episodes were down a tenth from last week in the demo in Nielsen fast affiliates, with the first part followed by the finale. The youth-driven talent showcase hosted by Melissa McCarthy was followed by two servings of The Wall, which averaged a 0.3 in the demo and maintained a little over 2 million viewers for each episode.
Fox’s coverage of the Nascar Cup Series from Charlotte, Nc, delivered a 0.6 in the demo and 3.73 million viewers to win the fairly quiet night. That compared with last week’s 1.1 in the demo in the early numbers,...

Since mid-March, the coronavirus pandemic has upended every aspect of life in the United States, causing stay-at-home mandates in most states in an attempt to contain the spread of Covid-19.
As a consequence, the entertainment industry — a multi-billion-dollar global business — has come to a grinding halt, with every television show and movie indefinitely shut down, putting most of the tens of thousands of people employed by those productions out of work. The shutterings hit the broadcast networks — Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, and The CW — toward the end of the traditional TV season, so some shows had already completed production before the summer hiatus. Others — such as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” which had shot 21 episodes of its 25-episode order — simply had to adjust accordingly, concluding its season early on April 9.
The bigger concern for the networks is what to do with their fall 2020 schedules, which under normal circumstances would have been unveiled to advertisers,...

There are two nights left to count until the 2019-2020 television season is in the books and, as usual, some shows had a better year than others. This time around, broadcast’s lowest-rated entertainment series among adults 18-49, which is the demographic beloved by advertisers, was the Melissa McCarthy-hosted kids’ talent show “Little Big Shots,” with several series tying for second-to-last place. Click through TheWrap’s gallery to see this season’s 22 lowest-rated broadcast TV shows ranked by their “most current” Nielsen ratings, which include a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available. For the purposes of this story, we elected not to count shows on The CW and newsmagazines like “20/20,” “48 Hours” and “Dateline,” which would have gobbled up several slots. Following its recent cancelation after two seasons, the series finale of “God Friended Me” on CBS scored less-than-heavenly numbers, as ABC took Sunday night thanks to “American Idol”‘s first at-home edition.
The two-hour “God Friended Me” curtain call averaged around a 0.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 6.2 million total viewers, which represents roughly a 3-week high in both metrics. However, those numbers fall well short of the season 2 highs of a 0.9 rating and 7.1 million viewers. Later on, “NCIS: Los Angeles” closed out season 11 with a 0.6 rating and a season low 5.3 million viewers. “60 Minutes” topped the night for CBS with a 0.9 and 10.7 million pairs of eyeballs.
Meanwhile, “American Idol” aired an episode in which contestants performed at home for the first time, scoring a 1.0 rating and just over 6 million viewers, which represents a 3-week audience high. “The Rookie” benefited from its strong lead-in, ticking up from last episode to a 0.7 and just under 5 million viewers.

Who says you can’t go home? For “American Idol,” doing exactly that with performances provided a ratings boost from the previous Sunday. (Actually singing certainly helped too.)
ABC was first in ratings with a 0.8 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 5.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. Following a rerun, “Idol” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. averaged a 1.o/5 and 6 million viewers. “The Rookie” at 10 had a 0.7/3 and 5 million viewers.
CBS was second in ratings with a 0.6/3 and first in viewers with 7.1 million. At 7, “60 Minutes” drew a 0.9/5 and 10.7 million viewers. “God Friended Me” at 8 got a 0.6/3 and 6.4 million viewers. A second episode at 9, the season finale, received a 0.5/2 and 6.1 million viewers. “NCIS: Los Angeles” at 10 had a 0.6/3 and 5.3 million viewers.

The “Disney Family Singalong” continued to be one jump ahead of the competition in delayed viewing.
ABC’s special rose on a magic carpet to a 3.2 Live+3 rating among adults 18-49, comfortably topping an encore of “The Masked Singer” by almost an entire ratings point. For comparison, the regular “Masked Singer” is averaging a 3.0 rating after three days of delayed viewing, meaning that the singalong is up there with the top non-football broadcasts of the season so far.
Others with a strong showing included “Survivor,” which grew to a 2.0 rating in L+3 (up on its 1.8 season average), and “Station 19” which leapt 42% to a 1.7 (up on its 1.5 season average).
In terms of total viewership, “NCIS” still reigned supreme with 16.1 million viewers, which represents almost 2 million more than its L+3 average for the season. The “Disney Family Singalong” slotted into second place with 12.2 million viewers, only just beating out “Chicago Fire.

“American Idol” is no longer America’s No. 1 show in Sunday TV ratings — for one week, at least. For the first time this season, CBS’ “60 Minutes” topped the ABC singing competition among adults 18-49.
ABC still squeaked out a win in the key demo’s primetime averages. As per usual, CBS and its long-running newsmagazine program were first in terms of total viewers.
Last night, “American Idol” aired Part 2 of “This Is Me,” a contestant backstory special comprised of never-before-seen footage, which was created by ABC to help fill out the season amid production shutdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic. The show also revealed live whether Grace Leer or Lauren Mascitti made its Top 20. Sorry, Lauren.

Unscripted series are showing the biggest ratings and viewership gains amid the mass self-isolation caused by coronavirus, and two of the biggest beneficiaries continued to consolidate their gains in delayed viewing.

Likewise the “Survivor” episode from that week on CBS also reached a 2.2 rating in Live+7 and 10.1 million total viewers, one million viewers more than its season average.
On the scripted front, “The Good Doctor” continued its run as the strongest viewership performer in delayed, gaining 5.1 million viewers to end up with 11.9 million.
Meanwhile the season 4 finale of “This Is Us” topped the ratings chart with a 2.9 rating up from a 1.7 in Live+Same Day and on par with its L+7 average over the course of the season.

American Idol may have took a one-tenth dip from last week in ratings, but it is still managed to top Sunday night with a 1.2 in the adults 18-49 demographic and earning 6.91 million viewers. The reality singing competition on ABC was sandwiched in between America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.0, 6.23M) which was done from last week and the steady return of The Rookie (0.8, 5.85M). The Nathan Fillion police drama also managed to deliver its largest audience.
At NBC, the freshman musical series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist was on par with last week, earning a 0.4 in the demo and netted 2.01 million viewers, a season-high since February. Little Big Shots (0.4, 3.08M) and The Wall held steady while Good Girls slipped to match series low.
