Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.
Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon had a podcast called The Indoor Kids where they discussed video games. The name refers to a line from Wet Hot American Summer (2001) which director Michael Showalter co-wrote.
I don't want kids. People say, "Sam, you're gonna love it. This kid... you're gonna have a kid. He's gonna be your best friend." A best friend that pukes on you and shits everywhere and is constantly screaming. I already *have* friends like that.
On the marketing image that shows all the characters, movie title etc, it shows Kumail's mother wearing a hospital visitors pass. She never went to the hospital.
In the beginning of the end credits, photos of shown of the real-life inspiration behind the Emily character, as well as the wedding between Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani and Nanjiani's real-life parents.
