Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.
Producer Judd Apatow reached out to Ray Romano for the part of Terry, after briefly working with him in the movie Funny People (2009). He was also a huge fan of Romano's sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond (1996).
It was horrible, too. As soon as I was finished, as soon as I finished, I was like, "what did you fucking do? What did you just do?"
Terry: "What did you do?"
Terry: You know, that-that, uh, moment of clarity you get, right after an orgasm.
Near the end of the movie when Kumail is looking through the window in the hospital room door he can see Emily's head but when the shot switches to the other side of the bed it is obvious you would not be able to see her from the window because of the angle of the bathroom wall.
In the beginning of the end credits, photos of shown of the real-life inspiration behind the Emily character, as well as the wedding between Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani and Nanjiani's real-life parents.
