This movie relied more on facial expressions that dialogue or actual acting talent. It was pretty, but not much of a story either. The 3 kids I took said, the most boring movie I ever saw." So that sums it up.

If you go into this thinking of the Disney version then yes you will hate this. It is not Disney. At best it would have made a better lifetime made for tv movie than big screen. Basically reporter man caring for and raising his sick niece after her parents death. Looking for a cure they learn of healing water. Go find a circus and learn the water was only like sugar pills makes you think your better for a while. Find mermaid who can't leave because the ring master has her soul. The little girl is kidnapped because reasons. She's special somehow. She not a mermaid but has the heart of one. Makes no sense. The reporter guy goes to save his niece and with the help of a magical gypsy and I guy you'd call his wolfman. They save the mermaid. Insert lame action scene. Ringmaster dies, mermaid gets back to sea, helps not cure just heal the girl and tells them oh a quick swim will make her better. Oh and they save Dumbo. Okay it's not really but might as well be. Why else throw in an elephant that needs saving? Would I recommend that you watch it with kids? No. Not due to anything bad just it's slow and little to no action so especially kids would get bored. If I had had to sit and watch it in theaters I'd have hated it. Its almost snooze worthy.

As an adult, I expected more. I knew this wasn't like the original story but the title little mermaid isn't right. They should have called it something else like the curse of the mermaid.. I do believe kids will like te movie and thats why I gave it 5 stars.

I watched this with my child who was so bored she wandered off within the first 20 mins. This could have been fantastic but was ruined by the very slow pace, poor script, poor (read diabolical) acting, lack of good cgi and wishy washy ending. I didn't read any reviews before watching it so wasn't swayed by other's opinions. I had seen the shorts previously and was looking forward to seeing it with the understanding that it was nothing like the Disney version & it was only loosely based on the original Hans Christian Anderson story. How on earth anyone could rate it higher than 3/10 is beyond me, I mean c'mon how awful was the actor playing Locke? My dog could play a better Wizard than this guy and for pete's sake the henchman with the feather, Argh!!, Oh and don't even start on dog boy!! There was nothing breathtaking about the story or the visuals, every aspect was as dull as dishwater. I did however enjoy the song that Poppy Drayton sang, I just don't understand why there was a song at all though, just the one. That makes no sense, surely if the lead sings in the movie then you have a few songs scattered through at least? Or no songs, perhaps the producer just couldn't decide what to do.

VERY ho hum twiddle my thumbs, daytime tv movie stuff.
  • So so boring and pointless. Horrible acting, script and plot. One of the worst movies I've watched in my life.

After watching for ten minutes it became apparent that this movie was made for the television. But why making a tv movie has to be a bad thing? The production has spent a good budget on sets and costumes, and the sound is not that bad. Also they did cast some people who can act under the right circumstances. When it came to putting everything together the entire project fell apart, and -sadly- this can only be the two directors's fault...the lack of experience is obvious in every scene, but the fight scenes are especially bad. So sad when I see good money and talent wasted on such ill planed projects.
  • georgina_marcon9 September 2018
The acting is extremely terrible, specially the fighting scenes where you can officially see none punch and kicks in slow motion. Nothing like the little mermaid at all. Worst hour of my life. I would not recommend at all.
  • The concept of the movie could (maybe?) be interesting if was executed... completely differently. This is NOT a re-make of The Little Mermaid so the title is misleading. Honestly- it's barely related to the story of the Little Mermaid at all- even though it's supposed to be (based off the beginning animated sequence). The "producer" -who happens to play the wizard (wonder how he got that part) is possibly the worst part about this "movie." It's not even bad/funny. It's just slow...boring... and it's written to be super corny. I just wouldn't bother.
  • So there are a ton of reviews trashing this movie because they're coming from adults who (like me) grew up with Disney's Little Mermaid and have been waiting for the "real people" version of that movie to come out. But this movie is not meant to be a remake of Disney's Little Mermaid, it's meant to be a twist on that story. (I also think it's kind of hysterical the people saying the fight scenes were boring and didn't look real; it's the effin Little Mermaid, if you were looking for decent action scenes, you're an idiot.) Don't have expectations when you watch this movie; I'm not saying that in the sense you'll be disappointed, I'm saying that because this isn't Disney, and it's not "the" remake we've been waiting for; that'll come out eventually. This a children's movie based loosely off of the original, and I actually think it's good. It's not necessarily a movie I would watch again, but not because it sucked, just because it's a little too calm for me. And I think that's exactly what's good about it. This is exactly the type of movie I would put on while babysitting. It's sweet, it's clean, the love between Cam and Elle is inspiring, and the fighting scenes aren't intense at all.

@EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THE MOVIE: Well done, truly. You somehow got the green light to produce a movie in the 21st Century without violence, without sex, without hidden innuendos (as EVERY kid's movie has nowadays). Try not to let the haters bother you. Darkness will always try to choke out the light.

I think this could have been great, the twist of the old story was good and I like the era they filmed it in. Unfortunately the bad guy could not act and the script could use some rewrite so it's not so obvious and cheese. They tried the thing with leaving things unsaid but did not really work, not because of the acting of the 3 main characters more because of the way they filmed it. I did actually like the main characters and the beginning of the film is good but then they try to hard in the middle of the film so when den ending came it felt like they them self just wanted the film to end because they had no way of making the ending good with the way they went with the story and the actors skill level.
  • I read several reviews before I watched the movie. Which was actually my encouragement to watch the movie. After reading so many bad reviews and only a couple good ones... I had to gather my own perspective. So, here it is.... Personally I thought it was a really sweet movie. The Circus Director and his side kick bring a bit of darkness to the movie. Might be a bit scary for little ones, let's say 5 yrs old and under. Just perfect for ages 6-12 yrs old. As a grandparent I would suggest if you are going to have younger children watching, maybe the adult should watch it first, then gage from there if it's something your particular child would be up to watching. However, I could be overreacting, because it's no more scary than the Wizard of OZ. *** on a more personal note....
    • Some of the other reviewers said that the acting was bad. I have to disagree with that completely.
    • I really liked the movie. Enjoyed seeing Shirley MacLaine in her Cameo part. Especially at the ending.
    • We are all entitled to our opinions... But I think the movie deserves more credit than it has received. I thought the acting was pretty good, the cast seemed to work together quite well. You would never guess that it was a lower budget film. The wardrobe, scenery and props, etc... were superb.
    • The character "Cam" played by William Moseley reminded my of "John-Boy" on the Waltons TV show, which was played by Richard Thomas. They were both writers, dressed alike and even had a similar look and mannerisms about them.
** Well overall I personally found the movie to be an "8" out of 10. Was it an adult movie? Geared a little more towards the older person, yes. But it also has NO foul language and NO inappropriate actions or innuendos. So it is completely safe for a young child to watch.. other than the little bit of scary parts. Which isn't really that scary. * As I said earlier, I read a bunch of reviews before watching. For me the bad reviews only made me more curious to form my own opinions. So my advice is to not pay any mind to those awful reviews. Especially if you are a real movie buff, such as myself. Gather your own opinions. Watch and enjoy!
  • This is a Perfect Movie for a Dad to take his young Daughter to see or rent. I read many of the negative reviews for this movie, But I think some people are missing the point... This is a young kids movie. As far as acting goes, for a Kid's Movie, it was not that bad. The little girl that watched it with me loved it! It was also good to see Shirley MacLaine's cameo. Rent it for the kids. Enough Said!
  • If I could list all the terrible films with cringey acting, this movie would be right up there or rather down there with the worst of them. I've never given a bad review because I always try to find the good things, or thing. Something that makes me say "okay at least it wasn't that bad" but I can't. It was beyond disappointing and so terrible that my brain cells might never recover from the traumatic experience. I feel like a big part of my childhood has been flushed down the drain. I had high hopes because they casted young attractive leads but I fell asleep within the first 10 minutes and then when i woke and restarted the movie, I cringed so much that I felt physical pain just trying to get to the end. I dont know who wrote the screenplay but shame on you. I am a published author with very little fans and even I could've done a better job. Everything about the film was lazy from the writers to the actors to the directors to the damn CGI people. It was just laziness and a monumental catastrophe. Please for the love of all things good in the world, erase this from the internet and recall all DVD'S. It is imperative that no one else has to suffer through this embarrassing excuse for entertainment.

The movie was a good movie...under any other name. I was a young girl when the Disney movie was released, and yes I am aware that the fairy tale is much different than the animated classic, however, I anticipated something so much grander than what I got. I am assuming this was the reason Chloe Grace Moretz pulled out, because she and her PR knew what people wanted and expected and the end result would be disappointing for the viewer. I wanted the essence of the Disney classic, the prince, the evil witch, the brushing of the hair with a fork. I know I am not alone in this sentiment. I suspect the film won't do well once everyone knows it is drastically different. This is the reason I gave such a small star rating. The graphics towards the end and green screen also attributed to my 2 star choice. I honestly was so excited to see my favourite childhood fantasy done as they had recently done Beauty and The Beast; True to form.

Positively, because I try to be a half full type person...I watched the movie in it's entirety without nodding off and interested in what the final result was going to be, it wasn't at all predictable because it veers so far off from what is expected. If this was a completely separate entity, and they did not use this title...I would have given the film a 6 most likely. Poppy is absolutely stunning, the acting wasn't terrible and some of the supporting roles were played by some heavy hitters. A good Mermaid Story YES...The Little Mermaid, I think not.

...I still hope they one day remake the version most of us are waiting for!

Some of the actors were not bad others were horrible, fight scenes were very laughable. Plot was redundant and it got very boring for the last half of the movie. I think giving it a 5 was being very nice.

I can hardly believe this movie was actually made, and even worse, released. Bad acting, bad story, bad everything. Wasted time!

One of the worst movies i have seen; Poor production. No acting skills. Totally cringe. And a messed up story. To sum it up, it totally ruined my day and im so glad I did not watch it in a movie theater and did not waste my money.
  • So many ignorant people here who don't realise that Disney did not create The Little Mermaid. In actual fact, it's a fairy tale written in 1835 by Hans Christian Andersen. Whilst I agree that this movie has some very bad acting and is a bit slow paced, it's a good story, fairly close to the original story and overall I enjoyed it
  • Feels like a movie that you would stumble upon Sunday morning on TV. Bad writing, mediocre acting and horrible effects. I do not recommend.
  • If you can forgive the fact that this is not the same story as Disney's The Little Mermaid (which it is not, because it is not a Disney production), then I do not see any reason why anyone would not really enjoy this movie. I really do not understand why there are so many horrible reviews about this movie. I thought it was really good, and the acting in it was just fine, and perfectly natural (no over acting for example). Anyone who is a fan of Poppy Drayton (from "The Shannara Chronicles") should love the movie, because she is really wonderful in it. I also really loved all of the other characters in the movie, and I really loved the story. The little girl, who played one of the main characters was so sweet, and beautiful. Great story, characters, and acting all around. I am really shocked that there are so many bad reviews about this movie. Just my opinion, but again, I really enjoyed it.

I actually enjoyed the movie, couple of really bad actors namely locke for one but it was a shame they called it the little mermaid which gives you the wrong impression as to what its about, definately not the disney story but good in its own right, i do agree that it is really aimed at the younger audience but would have to say that its a pleasant story line with some great morals.

I understand this this was designed to be a children's movie, but the "little mermaid" is a story that a lot of children and adults were raised on. Considering the re-known actors selected to play these parts, it was unnerving seeing how bad direction, production, and script could culminate in such a potentially good idea, into a horrible movie. t made very little sense and it's box office revenue is the proof...

Acting is like a local drama group having a bad night. So bad it's almost funny.
  • I saw this movie on Netflix and thought 'I love the story of the little mermaid Ill give this remake a shot!' Boy was I in for a surprise. This movie has nothing to do with the original tale. It only used it as a gimic to get people to watch it. I am laughing so hard right now because if I didn't I'd be pissed I wasted this past hour of my life watching this dumpster fire of a movie. The acting is sooooo bad. The script is bad. The cgi is mediocre at best. I hope if you're reading this you didn't spend any money on this film because I would demand a refund asap.
