  • Characters that exist beyond their relationship and don't need desperately to get laid nor someone to complete themselves, very interesting design and transitions between chapters, with well placed metaphors. These are, for me, the great technical features of the anime - even though the story isn't that unique, it doesn't make the experience of watching it any worse.
  • I do not remember a ton about this movie as I watched it in 8th grade but it is very sweet and lovely and a lot less fetishizy than some mlm anime tends to be. The animation is very lovely and the art style is unique and pretty too and I remember liking this movie quite a lot!!

When I watched it the first time I cried the last 10 minutes because it was reaching its ending and I hadn't had enough of this beautiful relationship. It's "a slow, serious love" - like the author says, and I couldn't be happier about it. This is not necessarily for teen girls or gay males, it portrays a pure love, even though it has boys' point of view, you could change either character for a female and the feeling would still be the same. I love everything about this, except for how short it is, but I just finished all the manga related to the story in 3 days because I couldn't live without more. Perhaps I'm raising the expectations too high, but this deserves my first review since I can't stop thinking about it and had to say something. I hope you like it as much as I did, and watch it as many times as I have. I know the author won't read this, but I want to thank her anyways for bringing all of this joy to my life. <3
  • It's a short, 1 hour experience that takes you through two boys' relationship over a year or two. It's really sweet, the characters are simple but relatable and It's really satisfying to watch.

For being only an hour, It got it's point across. It's a sweet, simple slice of life. I think the writers really did a great job with this one.

The art style is also something very different from what we normally see nowadays. It's simpler and fits the tone.

    Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
  • This is one of the best Shounen Ai movie I have ever watched (and probably my first ever review on IMDb). I am a Living Fujoshi and I have watched/Read many ShounenAi/BL/YAOI Anime and Manga. But this one stands out the most. This is a story of how two high school boys innocently fall in love with each other. The movie covers only the first volume of the series, but it is enough to appease my fujoshi heart (left 3 chapters that are irrelevant, anyway). This Movie got me grinning from ear to ear the whole time. I encourage you to read the manga as well. There is Part/Volume 1 up to Chapter 9 and Part/Volume 2 up to chapter 12.

You know how a movie can soften the audience on a certain sensitive topic? Well look no further! This is the best anime to soften the hearts of the audience in regard to homosexuality. What I love and adore about it is that it shows the common relationship struggles that we all face but in the life of homosexual's couple. Homosexuality is perfectly normalized. This is how I wish the real world would be in the future. To be honest, the art style did not intrigue me at all at first; however, the storyline portrayed in the trailer won me over! The story is just pure and lovely. There is no big coming out gesture or a huge drama regarding sexuality.

A classical slice of life anime, that has in its stylistic measurement, that never goes over the top, its best quality. It's also short and sweet and it portrays without any big drama a gay teenage love story. Unfortunately, it also feels like it could have been much better and it didn't end up sticking on me too much.
  • I was so hesitant at first to watch this, since I didn't like the style of animation and I'm getting tired of high school romances. Besides, I'm pretty new to the BL genre and I'm still nor really sure if that's my thing. After the first 10 minutes, i considered to stop watching it since the plot seemed over exaggerated and rushed. Well, I'm so glad I stuck with it because in the following 50 minutes it completely redeemed itself. This anime does a truly wonderful job in showing the difficulties such a young romance may face, and in particular gives us insight into the characters inner thoughts and worries. Every decision they take seems completely reasonable, as such the conflicts that arise are realistic and justifiable. Even though this story only has 60 minutes to draw you in, I've seldomly been this emotionally attached to a relationship between 2 characters and I truly wish there was a sequel. I don't think there's anything I could write that would do this anime justice and convey how good it is. Please just watch is, it's wonderful.

    amazing
I cried during the entire movie because of how beautiful it was, and i hardly ever cry to anime (only banana fish and given). their relationship was so soft and pure and true.

This was so disappointing for me. I was so excited to finally see this movie and it was kind of dull. The start was very cute but the whole thing feels like vignette loosely put together. I would have preferred more of a build up to their feelings. I didn't even understand why they liked each other at the start, it just seemed like "oh we have sang together 3 times, let's date because I love you with all my heart marry me". It was very sudden.

I think if we spent more time seeing why Kusakebe was so infatuated with Sajo. I wanted to feel why they fell for each other and why they meant so much to each other.

Sometimes I think because we are starved of this type of content we will forgive flaws but I just see so much story here that we never got.
  • I don't usually watch 'yaoi' series or movies. But this movie is one of my favorites now. It's so simple yet so unique. I love how they used metaphors and how their story was divided into different chapters. It's just so refreshing to watch. A simple love story is very rarely found. So this movie is very special, because there is no back story or pacts or whatsoever between the two characters. One guy falling for another in the midst of their juvenescence. That's it.

A must watch for all the teens and even adults out there.

When you'll start watching the movie, it will feel rushed because it seemed like that to me too. But slowly the pace will reduce and you'll be able to understand what the characters are feeling in a better way.

Both Sajou's and Kusakabe's character development will be slow and gradual. The length of the movie is not too long and is worth the watch!

    P. S. Don't judge it in the beginning give it time to open up and you'll like it!

I discovered this little film just this year through Tumblr. Though I wasn't very eager to check it out at first, the highly-positive reviews by both GoatJesus and KrisPNatz of YouTube convinced me otherwise

What a warm, funny, loving, engaging story it turned out to be! It may be simple (both story- and art style-wise), but it was worth the $3.99 rental on Amazon Prime -- I might even buy it at some point!

The two leads, Hikaru Kusakabe and Licht Sajo, may be polar opposites, but their chemistry is so enthralling, that I ended up rooting for them! Yes, Kusakabe is very forward with his advances towards Sajo, kissing him even if he says "no." But about halfway through, he seems to grow to respect both Sajo's boundaries and protests more. Not only that, but it's Sajo who begins to initiate his affections as well. Although the ending is slightly open-ended in regards to the boys' futures after graduating, it's still definitely happy, with the two together, willing to work through their own flaws.

As for issues I'd have with the film: As a music fan, I kind of wish that we saw more of Kusakabe's musicianship (that might be something that the manga/anime, Given, will make up for!). I was also confused as to why the incident involving the teacher, Mr. Hara, trying to seduce Sajo was left unreported. In fact, Kusakabe later goes to said teacher for advice on how to have sex as if they're good friends!

All in all, this film touched my heart and lifted my spirits, which is definitely what I feel like I needed during quarantine.
  • This gave me lots of heartwarming emotions. They started felling in love unreasonably, but that's what love is. Along the movie, it gradually let's see their love development through the passing seasons. Althrough they had some conflicts, they are normal conflict that any couple could ever has.

Even through I wasn't in to it for a few of times since their personalities were like me with my boyfriend that I wasn't in to, like one was very in love and not preparing for his future, and another one is a diligent guy thinking about his future, I feel they really like each other, and I think they can improve themselves together.

This movie is a great adaptation to the manga. The story is simple yet compelling and that's what makes the characters so real. I loved it,

I really thought this anime was super super cute with a nerdy shy guy who wants to get ahead with his education Sajo and the bad boy rocker Kusakabe. I mean seriously whenever they both embrace each other, my heart stops and I cant breathe, my inner fangirl was shook lol! Seriously though, this movie just really was wonderful and gives you a good kick outta life no matter how hard it can be! I think both guys were just made for each other, although some scenes I found cringy when the learning support teacher(cant remeber the name) badly wanted to kiss Sajo. Jeez if he was doing that for real, that teacher would lose his job and it wouldn't be a nice punishment either! It was even strange that after Kusakabe thumped him, he became friends with him later on, like really? I would keep away from that creep who is meant to be a teacher, not a love advisor!

Anyways I'm glad both Sajo and Kusakabe lived happily ever after! I give this a 9/10 because it was just a sweet gay story!
  • I understand that yaoi, BL, etc... (in animated or acted format) is a very specific subgenre (and very successful) but for me, as an adult gay man, it's garbage (with all due respect).

It is totally unreal. With hetero-normative gay adolescent relationships (one clearly occupies a more "masculine"/active role and the other a more "feminine"/passive role, when in reality this is not the case)... On the other hand, these movies are like soap operas where the characters and their stories are isolated from the world. There are no conflicts with their parents, nor personal or social conflicts (loneliness, depression, political or social questions, poverty, drugs, sexist violence, lgbt rights, labor exploitation, bullying, STDs, political corruption, etc.). All movies (animated or acted) of this genre are the same, only focused on extreme shyness, on what is not said, what is not expressed, the fear of not being perfect, of not saying the right thing, of not being a good student, not fit. I know that it was born as a subgenre made by and for teenage girls in the 80s, but what surprises me is that it has become a cultural standard that impacts millions of people.

And the problem is that if one is looking to watch a quality lgbt-themed Asia-Pacific movie, it's getting harder and harder to escape this genre (most of the movies or series (animated or acted) I find fall into this style), which has very high ratings on IMBD and elsewhere, but surely given by its fans.

And, to escape from reality, I would prefer a brainless comedy.
  • I am still thankfull they didn't animate all of the pedo stuff.

I honestly haveno idea why there has to be either pedophilia or assault/rape in every bl ever.
