Evaluating animated TV can be tricky. Not only is animation a medium that crosses a wide range of genres, but so many of our earliest memories in front of a screen are tied to an animated series, short, or special, and that impermeable nostalgia can be difficult to penetrate with typical critical tools like reason, logic, and other objective criteria. Some shows just click. They hit at the right time and capture a blossoming imagination. When it comes to ranking animated series, you’re not just analyzing TV shows. You’re critiquing childhoods.
Of course, animation is also one of the more expansive TV subsets, with dozens of different tones and styles that make comparisons often feel like apples and oranges. There are cartoons, anime, short films, short series, short films turned into short series, web series, adult-oriented animation, and that’s before digging into all the individual genres, like...

Exclusive: Emmy Award-winning actor Joe Morton and Catherine Tate have joined the Fox Entertainment comedy series Going Dutch cast in heavily recurring roles opposite series star and executive producer Denis Leary.
The single-cam comedy follows arrogant loudmouth U.S. Army “Colonel Patrick Quinn” (Leary), who after an epically unfiltered rant, is reassigned to the Netherlands, where he is punished with a command position at the least important army base in the world. After serving with distinction in every warzone of the last three decades, he now finds himself in charge of a base with no guns, no weapons, and no tactical purpose.
Instead, it has a Michelin-star level commissary, top-notch bowling alley, and the best (and only) fromagerie in the U.S. Army. Surrounded by a diverse group of underdogs, the colonel tries to reinstall military discipline and professionalism with the help...

The 1973 musical “The Rocky Horror Show,” immortalized in the 1975 film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” is getting a side-scrolling video game adaptation. “The Rocky Horror Show Video Game” is set for release next month across major consoles and Steam for computer platforms, timed to the Halloween spooky season.
Befitting the musical nature of “Rocky Horror,” the project even includes chiptune versions of songs from the films — including, but of course, the “Time Warp.” The game features 8-bit-styled graphics bringing the show’s sets and characters to life, combining ’80s nostalgia with the show’s ’70s retro vibes in the release from FreakZone Games and Metal X Entertainment/Bit Bot Media.
“‘The Rocky Horror Show’ is a unique experience that transcends traditional entertainment, and we wanted to bring that magic to gamers — whether they’re already fans of the IP or discovering it for the first time,” producer Joshua Viola said in a Thursday statement.

Beetlejuice isn’t the most kid-friendly source material. The two main characters are a couple who tragically died in a car accident and now have to learn to cope with being dead. The titular character — who only occupies 17 minutes of screentime — is an evil, unscrupulous ghost that tricks the main characters into letting him torture an innocent, if annoying, family. He also, most horrifically of all, nearly marries a 16-year-old girl against her will.
Still, in the ‘80s and ‘90s, it was perfectly normal to adapt an adult film into a Saturday morning kids cartoon. Which is why Beetlejuice, despite its subject matter, was ripe for an animated adaptation. Of course, things had to be toned down. The Maitlands (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis in the film) were removed entirely, and all references to “the afterlife” were substituted with “the neitherworld.” Beetlejuice himself would also become less nefarious and more of a goofy,...

“Hot Ones” is getting animated with a special guest: iconic Disney character Donald Duck. As he takes on wings and special Disney-themed sauces, the character also faces questions about his history, “DuckTales, “Darkwing Duck” and more.
“To close things out with your beak on fire and duck-sized brain slow-roasting in hot sauce, I want to hit you with some rapid-fire questions about some of your animated cohorts,” “Hot Ones” host Sean Evans says to Donald Duck right after he scarfs down a cauliflower wing, which was dipped in the ultimate hot sauce of his run, “Straight Out of Hades.”
“Are you and Darkwing Duck related?” Evans said, shooting off his inquiries.
“On ‘DuckTales,’ your Uncle Scrooge gets a lot of the limelight. Do you all resent his wealth and power?” Evans continued. But, overcome by the power of the sauce, the normally loquacious (if hard to understand) Donald finds himself unable to answer.

Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft (Dak).
Up Front
In the Up Front this month Dak comes up with the idea of doing an opinion poll for Comics Interview. This doesn’t feel like a conventional opinion poll as Dak doesn’t set any specific questions. Instead, he is looking for readers to tell him what have been their favourite interviews and who they would like to be interviewed. The replies will play out in the letters pages so that might see me shine more of a spotlight there in the coming months. In the last few months, the Up Front has dropped off, not really offering much to the magazine.

Sorry to the new Futurama, Rugrats and whatever other beloved animated series is getting a reboot next, but according to cartoon fans, you’ll never beat Beavis and Butt-Head.
When a room full of studio executives decides to revive a beloved and nostalgic franchise that hasn’t been touched in decades, the reboot is simultaneously a safe move from a business standpoint and a creative risk that can ruin all the longstanding goodwill that the suits are about to turn into easy dollar signs. This is especially apparent in animation, wherein the nature of the medium allows showrunners to bring back all the original characters and acting talent that made the show’s first run a success without having to delve into the uncanny valley with awful de-aging technology, while the fanbases for animated shows somehow tend to be the most passionate, opinionated and hostile to change of any internet following.

It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

For millions of Japanese viewers as well as countless fans across the globe, the Ultraman franchise, pitting a giant superhero against giant kaiju creatures of all shapes and breeds, has been a popular staple since it was first launched as a TV series in the 1960s.
But for this critic and likely many other viewers, especially in the U.S., the new English-language feature-length version, Ultraman: Rising, will be their first encounter with a character who’s been taking flight for over a half a century in live-action, animated and manga formats.
The experience is not unlike discovering Star Wars for the first time by watching the 2015 J.J. Perhaps the most overlooked series in the "Star Trek" canon ("Short Treks" and "Very Short Treks" notwithstanding), "Star Trek: The Animated Series" may be accepted as the final two years in the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year mission. "Star Trek: Tas" debuted on September 8, 1973, four years after the cancelation of "Star Trek," to reunite the original cast and writers to explore Starlfeet's adventures in a 30-minute, animated format. The animation was provided by Filmation, the studio that had previously overseen multiple Batman and Superman cartoons, Archie cartoons, "Gilligan's Island" spinoffs, and which would go on to produce the ultra-popular "Fat Albert," "The Groovy Goolies," "BraveStarr," and "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." Filmation shows were popular among kids, but their animations tended to be stiff and inexpressive. The most prominent feature of "Star Trek: Tas" is how static it looks.
However, the shortened runtime forced the writers of "Tas...

Against considerable odds, they quickly showed that true handheld gaming was no longer just a neat idea or occasional distraction. The Game Boy would go on to revolutionize the handheld gaming scene in ways that are still being felt today.
For as incredible as the design of the Game Boy hardware was (at least relative to its time), the device obviously wouldn’t have made it far if it wasn’t for the quality of its exclusive games. You undoubtedly know some of their names, but the history of the Nintendo Game Boy is truly defined by a wide variety of titles that showcased all of the qualities that leave us...

Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Two years ago, Smith and his co-owners saved the century-old Atlantic Highlands bijou from demolition, renaming it after his podcast theater.

Nibbler the Nibblonian first appeared on "Futurama" in the episode "Love's Labours Lost in Space", wherein Leela (Katey Sagal) assumed he was a poor, lost animal that merely needed a home. She put an adorable red cape on him and outfitted him with a diaper. Nibbler had a voracious appetite and could consume many, many, many times his own body weight in pork products in a single day. Nibbler would then poop out perfectly round spheres of solidified dark matter that, quite conveniently, could serve as starship fuel.
It was later revealed that Nibbler was, in fact, Lord Nibbler, an impossibly ancient being -- born around 274 Bce -- who could speak in a clear, deep voice. He belonged to a species that possessed fleets of tiny, adorable warships and who were occasionally kidnapped and farmed for their fuel-pooping abilities. For years, whenever someone saw Nibbler speak, he could activate his...

At the start of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's 31st-century sci-fi sitcom "Futurama," the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) sounded a little bit more like a drunken vagrant. He slurred his speech more and seemed less able to concentrate. As the show progressed, Bender became more self-assured, like the guy at the bar who — after his fourth shot of Jim Beam — is 100% confident he could thrash the bouncer. Bender became egotistical in addition to being a drunken criminal. On DVD commentary tracks, the makers of "Futurama" have said that Bender, in being a robot, allowed them more explicit depictions of violence and vice; a human character cannot drink a gallon of rotgut whiskey and smoke four cigars simultaneously, but a robot can. The Fox censors are weird.
Prior to "Futurama," Dimaggio only had a few credits to his name. His first gig was playing ancillary voices in...

I love cartoons. Specifically cartoon series from the 80’s and 90’s. Whenever someone asks me what my favorite childhood cartoon is, I always say there are two. The first is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the second is Darkwing Duck. I was the biggest fan of the masked mallard, and who wouldn’t be? He was brave, smart, egotistical, and accident-prone but would persevere against evil. He had a killer costume and cool equipment to fight bad guys. He had an awesome rogue’s gallery that was a bit of a joke but also surprisingly formidable. The cartoon was also not afraid to show its love for classic superhero comics at a time when the general public didn’t understand it. It even broke through the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War. But does this cartoon from the early 90’s still hold up? Is it a silly...

Ultraman is back.
The character, created by Eiji Tsuburaya in 1966 with the “Ultra Q” and “Ultraman” television series, is back in a brand-new animated feature called “Ultraman Rising.” It’s due out next year but you can watch the trailer above.
In “Ultraman Rising,” baseball superstar Ken Sato, the new Ultraman, “quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe,” according to the official synopsis. The trailer shows him battling a huge monster and then effectively adopting the monster’s child, which puts him at odds with his persona as creature-slaying titan. There’s a wonderful moment in the trailer where Ken shrinks down to his human size but the baby still towers above him.
The voice cast for the animated feature includes Christpher Sean, Gedde Watanabe, Tamlyn Tomita, Keone Young and Julia Harriman. Shannon Tindle, creator of Netflix’s fantastic “Lost Ollie,...

Disney’s “Gargoyles” are coming back, TheWrap has learned.
The beloved animated series, which ran in syndication on weekday afternoons for three seasons from 1995 to 1997, is set to return, this time as a live-action series for Disney+ from James Wan’s Atomic Monster, writer Gary Dauberman (who wrote all three “Annabelle” movies) and Disney Branded Television. Dauberman is attached as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the new series.
“Gargoyles,” which centered on a band of monstrous warriors who, long ago, were encased in stone and cursed to stay that way unless they were lifted above the clouds, find themselves awoken in modern day Manhattan after a billionaire zealot placed them atop his latest towering skyscraper. (They remain stone during the day but become flesh-and-blood at night.) The Gargoyles then have to figure out what life in the contemporary world is like, while also attempting to rid New York City of some of its crime.

The 1980s was a golden era for TV animation. It was the decade of Thundercats, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Ducktales, The Smurfs, He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Yet arguably, the best of them all was The Real Ghostbusters.
The show arrived at a time when studios were eager to translate box office gold into something palatable for younger audiences. It didn’t always quite go to plan, of course, as short-lived and ill-advised animated incarnations of everything from Rambo to The Karate Kid can attest.
But The Real Ghostbusters was different, running for 140 episodes across seven seasons.

Lance Reddick’s unexpected death in March 2023 halted a thriving acting career that consisted of many memorable performances, including several voice-over gigs on TV series like “Castlevania,” “Duck Tales” and “Rick and Morty.” In addition to half a dozen mid-production projects, his legacy could include a posthumous Emmy victory in honor of his vocal work on the Amazon Prime Video animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina.” After Chadwick Boseman, who won the 2022 Best Character Voice-Over prize for “What If…?” two years after his death, Reddick would be the second posthumous recipient of any voice acting Emmy.
Reddick joined the recurring cast of “The Legend of Vox Machina” in its second season, which concluded less than a month before he died. His character, Thordak, is the leader of a group of dragons known as the Chroma Conclave, whose destructive plans are encumbered by the heroic, interspecific members of Vox Machina.

The 1990s: the decade when teal squiggles and purple triangles reigned supreme. Or at least, that's what our collective memory has assigned to the period's romanticized style guide.
The '90s were formative for the medium of animation. On the silver screen, Disney animated musicals dominated the box office and awards seasons, while studios like Pixar and DreamWorks debuted their first feature films. On the small screen, the animation revolution continued in what we can now look back on as a unique convergence of passing generations. The Disney Afternoon programming block crested the wave of its success, oodles of beloved Nicktoons busted onto the scene, Cartoon Network launched, and some of today's longest-running animated series populated airwaves for the very first time.
Attempting to rank the best 90s cartoons is a nearly impossible task. Everyone has their favorites, whether we're talking about precious childhood shows or foundational barrier-breakers in adult animation.

Animation, in general, still doesn't get the respect it deserves, although things are changing for the better on that front thanks to folks like Guillermo del Toro (whose mantra that animation is an artistic medium and not a genre for kids has become a rallying cry among us animation lovers). But it's not just animation itself that's regarded as being inferior to live-action. Voice acting is a form of creative expression that requires just as much specialized skill and practice as live-action acting, if not more so. As we've seen time and time again, big-name stars and A-listers who are relative novices to the animation game are rarely a satisfying substitute for veteran voice actors — and certain roles simply demand the sort of expertise you can only really gain from years of voice-only performances.

Nicolas Cage as Dracula is grabbing all the headlines for director Chris McKay's vampire horror/comedy "Renfield," and deservedly so. But while Nicholas Hoult acquits himself very well as the subservient title character with pitch-perfect comedic timing and Cage steals the show through his penchant for hamming it up, Ben Schwartz also shines as the picture's secondary, foul-mouthed antagonist: a mobster named Teddy Lobo who gets himself mixed up in the Dracula and Renfield drama.
Everyone likely knows the actor from his meme-worthy role as Jean-Ralphio in "Parks and Recreation," his turn in Showtime's "House of Lies," or a plethora of voice performances in projects like "DuckTales," "Sonic," and more. Mondo is once again ready to save the day by giving fans of colorful vinyl albums our fix. This time around, the artist-forward collectible brand is delivering on the goods with a three-lp edition of the stirring, synth-y "Loki" original soundtrack from composer Natalie Holt.
