When The Shape of Water won Best Director at the Oscars, it marked the fourth time in just five years that a director of Mexican descent won in that field. Alejandro G. Iñárritu previously won on separate occasions for both Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) and The Revenant (2015), while Alfonso Cuarón won for Gravity (2013). Cuarón's win for Gravity was the first time ever that a director of Mexican descent had won the award.

Based on references to missiles in Cuba, the action takes place in last half of 1962. However General Hoyt says he has known Strickland since Pusan "thirteen years ago". The battle of Pusan was in fall of 1950, not 1949.
