Few country stars have been embraced by the Grammys like Kacey Musgraves has. The singer-songwriter rose to prominence with her mainstream debut, “Same Trailer Different Park,” which became one of the most acclaimed albums of 2013, earning an 89 score on Metacritic and establishing Musgraves as one to watch in the industry. She received four Grammy nominations that year and won Best Country Album in a major upset against Taylor Swift’s commercial blockbuster “Red.” Musgraves followed that with another Grammy-nominated record, “Pageant Material,” but her third try was the charm: “Golden Hour” won Album of the Year and swept its three other nominations in the country field. Then came the pop-leaning “Star-Crossed,” which nevertheless received two country nominations. This year Musgraves is back with “Deeper Well,” which many are considering a return to form and a folk-country masterpiece. She is for sure getting her usual country nominations. But can she crossover to the general field again?...

On her sixth studio album, Deeper Well, Kacey Musgraves digs into both her psyche and the sounds of folk music, making for an affecting and mellow set of songs. The album kicks off with the crystalline, fingerpicked intro of “Cardinal,” an almost startling introduction given the pop-heavy sound of Musgraves’s last album, Star-Crossed, before giving way to a more contemporary acoustic-guitar passage as the singer muses about lost loved ones. It’s an intimate and effective tone-setter for the rest of the album, as many of the songs here revolve around memory and loss.
The title track establishes the thesis of Deeper Well: “I’m saying goodbye to the people/That I feel are real good at wasting my time/No regrets, baby, I just think that maybe/You go your way and I’ll go mine.” The gentle guitars and unobtrusive drumming create a soundscape that echoes the...

Munich-based Beta Film, one of Europe’s leading television companies, and seasoned executive Danny Goldman have joined forces to form London-based Omega Global Media, a distribution business focusing on a selection of high-end English-language TV series. Last April, Sphere Media took the Canadian Screen Awards by storm with 22 awards for its scripted content, including a record 12 wins for the historical Black drama “The Porter” and seven for queer comedy “Sort Of.” It was a big night for Canada’s third-largest independent producer, and in particular for Jennifer Kawaja, Sphere’s president of scripted and feature films for English Canada.
Previously, Kawaja spent decades heading up Sienna Films with her business partner, Julia Sereny, helming several award-winning projects like “Cardinal,” “Trickster” and “One Dead Indian.” The duo sold the company to Kew Media Group in 2017 and in 2020, Montreal-based Datsit Sphere snatched it up when Kew was placed into receivership. Last year, Sphere restructured and rebranded under a single banner with the intention of streamlining content creation, production and distribution.

With the world taking a seemingly dystopian turn due to the Cover-19 pandemic, “My First Family,” a high-concept series project set in an alternate world created by Maya Zaydman (“Our Boys”) and Ori Sivan (“In Treatment”), will likely strike a chord with audiences.
“My First Family,” which is being pitched as part of Series Mania’s virtual co-production forum, unfolds in a contemporary but fictional France where the conservative candidate Valery Giscard d’Estaing was elected in 1981, instead of François Mitterrand.
The country has evolved radically differently from the France that we know today. Following several political and social events, as well as various incidents, the country voted to create in 2002 a Certificate of Parental Aptitude that parents need to get in order to reproduce. Kids whose parents have failed the exam and who have become wards of the nation are paired with prospective parents, either couples or singles, during...

Kristin Kreuk is coming home.
The former “Smallville” and “Beauty and the Beast” star will return to The CW this summer, as the network has acquired the U.S. rights to the 10-episode Canadian legal drama “Burden of Truth” from Entertainment One. Created by Brad Simpson, the series is the latest addition to The CW’s growing slate of original programming for the summer 2018 season.
“Burden of Truth,” which premiered in January on the CBC, stars Kreuk as a big city lawyer who returns to her hometown to take on what she thinks is a simple case, only to find herself in a fight for justice for a group of sick girls. The series also stars Peter Mooney (“Rookie Blue”), Alex Carter (“NCIS”), Benjamin Ayres (“Saving Hope”), Nicola Correia-Damude (“Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments”), Meegwun Fairbrother (“Hemlock Grove”) and newcomer Star Slade.
